This talk hits the very center focus of civic affairs...core principles, with the surrounding parts fluid. I love Daniel 5:21, "[T]he most high God rule[s] in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will."
After the constitution failed to protect the saints, Joseph Smith said: “By all honorable methods and means assist me in obtaining justice from Missouri: not only for the property she has stolen and confiscated, the murders she has committed among my friends, and for our expulsion from the State, but also to humble and chastise her for the disgrace she has brought upon constitutional liberty, until she (the State) atones for her sins. I bring this appeal before my native State for the solemn reason that an injury has been done, and crimes have been committed, which a sovereign State, of the Federal compact, one of the great family of “E pluribus unum,” refuses to compensate, by consent of parties, rules of law, customs of nations, or in any other way. With the pandemic, the Lord prepared President Nelson for this time, With all the riots, law changes around the World these last few years, and knowing President Oaks is the next senior Apostle, my mind is at ease even during these crazy times, especially with his professional background... The Lord has it all worked out y'all! Church is true!
I imagine Elder Oaks has played a huge part in helping the Church navigate a course through difficult legal worries and issues. It's not just him. If you look at the backgrounds of all the top leadership of the Church, you see an incredible lifetime collection of wisdom, life experience, and good judgement across a broad spectrum of issues.
This is one of the most important General Conference talks ever given. I sincerely believe this talk will go down as a classic on par with President Benson’s talk on pride. As far as I’m concerned this could be a section in the Doctrine and Covenants, or an official proclamation. We desperately needed this right now. Many people have been sucked into false political ideologies on both sides of the aisle as of late, and this will help serve as an anchor to us to keep from being “tossed to and fro.” God bless you. How can Brother Oaks and others be loyal to the constitution? In 2015, the church joined the UN and participates in Agenda 2030. If you have read the many documents from the UN, you know that the two are not compatible.

"On contested issues we should seek to moderate and unify." To me that sound like having faith in my fellow man when we disagree politically, and that has been hard for me to do. It's hard to share power and believe that other people are acting in good faith, but I think that's what I need to try and do.
I try to remind myself that half of the country cannot possibly be as corrupt or as evil or even as “stupid” as they are made out to be. I try to find the reason why-the motivating reasons why-the other political party feels the way they do. And I try to remember that “liberal” means “generous” and “conservative” means “frugal”. Generosity and frugality are both wonderful attributes to possess. Either one in the extreme is a nightmare. I think that Heavenly Father wants us to join Him in “the sweet spot” where justice(frugality), love, and mercy(generosity) meet in harmony Divine.❤️

I wish they would speak more bluntly about our God given liberties being taken. The Supreme law is still the constitution and everything we're seeing is in direct opposition to it.
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
It’s perfectly legal to change the Constitution through the amendment process, but it’s very difficult to do and requires the votes of a LOT of people.

I have been anticipating more talks like these from Pres Oaks ever since he was chosen to be one of our Prophets counselors. Just another divine witness among many that the Lord is very much active and aware today. Just as much, if not more, than recorded anciently.
@14:13 I think it's wonderful that we can have a church which has had very passionate leaders on both sides of the aisle. Such as President Benson and President Faust. President Benson being the very conservative and passionate conservative serving in high levels of government, also President James E Faust who was a Democratic member of the Utah House of representatives and President of the Democratic party in Utah. You can be a wonderful person and be a member or either party regardless if your political views lean left or right or support either candidate. He is not talking to one party or another but is talking to ALL saints to be kind loving one to another. He was CLEAR that we can support any party or political view! I lean right but not on every issue and my wife leans left but not on every issue. Our discussions and loving conversations have helped me to see the other side of the aisle and the virtues contained there. I also believe I have had the same affect on my beautiful wife. It's great to hear this and been waiting years for the Church to raise awareness about it. Rights of men including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness come from God, not from man, and cannot be taken away. Hello everyone, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who moved to Utah a few years ago from Europe. My experience here has been great, I felt mostly welcomed and except for a few exceptions most people spoke positively about my country. I must confess, however, that when I go to Church and we sing the national anthem or other patriotic hymns I struggle a bit. I have hard time also when during a Church meeting some testimonies are focused on America...and its freedoms...I have nothing against patriotism. I think it is generally a good thing. I only struggle when patriotic things are done during sacred meetings that should focus on the Savior. Please I am not looking for arguments or debates. I only want to understand better why in the US this seems a common and accepted practice while I have never seen anywhere else so far singing the national anthem during a sacrament meeting. Thank you to all those who want to give me their perspective.
This was my favorite talk at general conference. I've recently made videos about the Decline of Political America and the upcoming need to Flee to Zion, on my channel. When Elder Oaks gave this talk, I felt confirmation from God that our prophets and apostles WILL save us. When it comes to the end times, they've got this.
The smallest minority is the individual....agency is God's plan....not coercion or bullying into submission to the mob or the ruling class elitists. We should support every individual right to chart ones own course and Destiny.
The whole time watching it, I kept saying, "Yeah! You tell 'em, Elder Oaks!" The sad thing is, President Ezra Taft Benson and President David O. McKay said similar things and in many wards and stakes, it is considered taboo to quote them on those things. I bet the only ones who heed this talk will be people like me who already felt a love for the Bill of Rights and for the U.S. Constitution!
I don't know one American who doesn't love the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and thankfully, one of the most inspired parts of the constitution is that it can be amended.
Mobs can not interfere. It is important to preserve the separation of powers. So much of what he says guides us to know how to vote in November. We need to listen to the counsel we are given.
We are to be governed by laws and not individuals. These laws protect against autocracy. I’m so glad he gave us this reminder. Government should be unified. I love this message and the messages of inclusion. Christ taught us to love one another as He loves us. Seems to me this message also relates to that commandment. Such an inspired and inspiring reminder! I’m so grateful for Elder Oaks and this message.
A true and clear understanding no one should question or change for personal gain or for power over others all people should honor and obey giving all the rights equally to all people without pridudice
Yes. He was truthful and frank, and He even warned people about the negative consequences of their bad choices, but he never tried to force people to accept His message. He only acted on whatever Heavenly Father asked Him to do.
This is the most important talk of them all in my opinion. If Dallin Oaks could speak unfiltered the church would be shut down as quick as Trump. If nothing changes there won't be many more conferences anyway. Checks and balances are not balanced. If the Judicial branch gets packed the 28th amendment may be the last chance for freedom.

It just goes to show how different we all are and yet still brothers and sisters in the gospel. We have enjoyed much joy and prosperity the last four years and are now terrified of the next four years. At least half of us are happy, right?
So many times IMHO one side sees something wrong and, instead of opposing it, uses it as a club against the other. They don't want to drop their club and the wrong isn't righted. Get rid of any wrong before it is twisted against us. But this brings up what is wrong (but I must go and sweep up the basement floor).
With Ezra Taft Benson having talked of the church basically saving the constitution in the end times, I have often wondered how that could happen when so many members are so casual and uninformed about that great document. Most people think this country was founded upon and run by Democracy, yet that is exactly what the founders did NOT want this to be. And so they set up the constitution to prevent the country from decaying into a Democracy the way Rome did. Yet here we are all calling our form a government a Democracy rather than a Republic. Two very different things. I pray good people everywhere study and learn more about the constitution and the founders intentions.
Oh, I think we understand the founders' intentions. The more important point is that the Constitution "must grow and develop to meet the changing needs of an advancing world." Hence, "inspired amendments" that result in greater democracy, not less of it. President Oaks directly addressed 1) the need for maximum freedom for maximum agency, 2) the threat of autocrats and mobs who try to undermine democracy, and 3) loyalty to law and not to (duly elected) individuals.
Ist Counselor in the 1st Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has given us active ways to defend our Nation under our laws under our Constitution in our great country that God has given us. Listen to his inspring teachings regarding our Sovereign Power as Nation States relegated to the People not a King. The Bill of Rights guarantees America to have freedoms starting with the First Amendment. Pres. Oakes says: "we are to be governed by law--not by individuals". Candidates who ignores its principles of limited government are intolerable to me. Learn the Constitution and join service in political parties and pray about what rights are important to we as individuals, Dalin H Oakes.
Maybe some members new review this for a second time? God has given His children moral agency-the power to decide and to act. The most desirable condition for the exercise of that agency is maximum freedom for men and women to act according to their individual choices.”
A beautiful talk, if every member, particularly within church leadership held these principles dear to their hearts, I do not believe the church would be in such a sorry state as it is today.
The church is always perfect it’s the members that aren’t. We must know we are all human no one is perfect. Blaming the church because of the people within Is far beyond comparison.

I seriously don’t know what your worshipping or where your getting your content from but definitely it doesn’t align with the lds church teachings and principles. Nobody is forcing you, we talk of Christ preach of Christ and free agency to choose for yourself. I feel without a sure understanding and testimony of the restoration this is how one would feel such as what you would feel. My advice would be to pray and focus on the restoration of the gospel.
The constitution of the United States has been one of the most attacked things during this pandemic. Such event has taken away our liberties and common sense, since most people have allowed this to happen because of fear. It's also true that politics have divided not only non-members, but also members of the church more now than in the past,. We must replace fear with faith and distractions with knowledge of temporal and spiritual things.
Its kind of hard to be positive about this nations future due to the conflicts that are going on. Nuclear weapons are on stand by and its like, 'whats positive about that?' 'Billions will die.'

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who moved to Utah a few years ago from Europe. My experience here has been great, I felt mostly welcomed and except for a few exceptions most people spoke positively about my country. I must confess, however, that when I go to Church and we sing the national anthem or other patriotic hymns I struggle a bit. I have hard time also when during a Church meeting some testimonies are focused on America...and its freedoms...I have nothing against patriotism. I think it is generally a good thing. I only struggle when patriotic things are done during sacred meetings that should focus on the Savior. Please I am not looking for arguments or debates. I only want to understand better why in the US this seems a common and accepted practice while I have never seen anywhere else so far singing the national anthem during a sacrament meeting. Thank you to all those who want to give me their perspective.

The smallest minority is the individual....agency is God's plan....not coercion or bullying into submission to the mob or the ruling class elitists. We should support every individual right to chart ones own course and Destiny.

The whole time watching it, I kept saying, "Yeah! You tell 'em, Elder Oaks!" The sad thing is, President Ezra Taft Benson and President David O. McKay said similar things and in many wards and stakes, it is considered taboo to quote them on those things. I bet the only ones who heed this talk will be people like me who already felt a love for the Bill of Rights and for the U.S. Constitution!
I don't know one American who doesn't love the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and thankfully, one of the most inspired parts of the constitution is that it can be amended.
I think Oaks is more similar to McKay. McKay did not want pollitics to divide the Church, and sometmes reigned in those who did.
However, Ezra Taft Benson also used the sacred pulpit to promote his private political ideas.

Mobs can not interfere. It is important to preserve the separation of powers. So much of what he says guides us to know how to vote in November. We need to listen to the counsel we are given.

We are to be governed by laws and not individuals. These laws protect against autocracy. I’m so glad he gave us this reminder. Government should be unified. I love this message and the messages of inclusion. Christ taught us to love one another as He loves us. Seems to me this message also relates to that commandment. Such an inspired and inspiring reminder! I’m so grateful for Elder Oaks and this message.

Yes. He was truthful and frank, and He even warned people about the negative consequences of their bad choices, but he never tried to force people to accept His message. He only acted on whatever Heavenly Father asked Him to do.

This is the most important talk of them all in my opinion. If Dallin Oaks could speak unfiltered the church would be shut down as quick as Trump. If nothing changes there won't be many more conferences anyway. Checks and balances are not balanced. If the Judicial branch gets packed the 28th amendment may be the last chance for freedom.

So many times IMHO one side sees something wrong and, instead of opposing it, uses it as a club against the other. They don't want to drop their club and the wrong isn't righted.
Get rid of any wrong before it is twisted against us. But this brings up what is wrong (but I must go and sweep up the basement floor).

One of my favorite secular resources ever on this topic is the book "Crucial Conversations." (Publisher in Provo, UT)
With Ezra Taft Benson having talked of the church basically saving the constitution in the end times, I have often wondered how that could happen when so many members are so casual and uninformed about that great document. Most people think this country was founded upon and run by Democracy, yet that is exactly what the founders did NOT want this to be. And so they set up the constitution to prevent the country from decaying into a Democracy the way Rome did. Yet here we are all calling our form a government a Democracy rather than a Republic. Two very different things. I pray good people everywhere study and learn more about the constitution and the founders intentions.
Oh, I think we understand the founders' intentions. The more important point is that the Constitution "must grow and develop to meet the changing needs of an advancing world." Hence, "inspired amendments" that result in greater democracy, not less of it. President Oaks directly addressed 1) the need for maximum freedom for maximum agency, 2) the threat of autocrats and mobs who try to undermine democracy, and 3) loyalty to law and not to (duly elected) individuals.
Ist Counselor in the 1st Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has given us active ways to defend our Nation under our laws under our Constitution in our great country that God has given us. Listen to his inspring teachings regarding our Sovereign Power as Nation States relegated to the People not a King. The Bill of Rights guarantees America to have freedoms starting with the First Amendment. Pres. Oakes says: "we are to be governed by law--not by individuals". Candidates who ignores its principles of limited government are intolerable to me. Learn the Constitution and join service in political parties and pray about what rights are important to we as individuals, Dalin H Oakes.

A beautiful talk, if every member, particularly within church leadership held these principles dear to their hearts, I do not believe the church would be in such a sorry state as it is today.
The church is always perfect it’s the members that aren’t. We must know we are all human no one is perfect. Blaming the church because of the people within Is far beyond comparison.

I seriously don’t know what your worshipping or where your getting your content from but definitely it doesn’t align with the lds church teachings and principles. Nobody is forcing you, we talk of Christ preach of Christ and free agency to choose for yourself. I feel without a sure understanding and testimony of the restoration this is how one would feel such as what you would feel. My advice would be to pray and focus on the restoration of the gospel.

The constitution of the United States has been one of the most attacked things during this pandemic. Such event has taken away our liberties and common sense, since most people have allowed this to happen because of fear. It's also true that politics have divided not only non-members, but also members of the church more now than in the past,. We must replace fear with faith and distractions with knowledge of temporal and spiritual things.
