Chris, personal thanks for your efforts in presenting Billboard weekly Top 40 charts for the 1980's in video form. I have really enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Thanks again from "A Land Down Under" .....
Thank you for putting this together. 1989 was the year I graduated high school and trundled off to college, and man, weren't the pop charts the drizzling shits? Better than recent years? Sure. But a marked drop off from the charts of the early and mid 80's. Once you hear that tinny, mid-tempo drum machine beat, you can't unhear it.
Most enjoyable....but the question has yet to be answered...are the 90s coming....get the new year off to a great start and start 1990 soon....your efforts are appreciated...
Honorable mentions for this special survey: The Doctor by the Doobie Brothers(#9), You're Not Alone by Chicago(#10), Sacred Emotion by Donny Osmond(#13), and Don't Shut Me Out by Kevin Paige(#18)!!
I have to say (and I really do like Chicago) that "Look Away" is one of the weakest #1 songs of the year of the entire 70s, 80s or 90s. It really hasn't stood the test of time like so many others have.
Here's the song that most easily comes to my mind when I think of the group Chicago: 🎵You're the meanin' in my life / you're the inspiration / you bring feelin' to my life / you're the inspiration🎵
The verse don't look at me id want you to see me this way is pathetic.hes making it all about him... just get over it she needed a change... maybe ist you bra
So, to recap, a total of 33 #1 hits, 3 songs didn't reach the top 10, but had sufficient chart life to qualify, Young MC had, far and away, the oldest song in the entire survey, 2 of the top 10 songs of the year didn't hit #1(Anita Baker and, GULP, Milli Vanilli). Finally, Chicago has the #1 song of the year!!
Which Milli Vanilli song were they performin' live when it was first discovered that they were lip-synchin'? A: Blame It On The Rain B: Girl I'm Gonna Miss You C: Girl You Know It's True
without looking 'look away' is no. song even tho it came out in '88. And '90's will begin the slow descent of chart hits. It really goes downhill after '91. Just shut it down after '91.
@@adrianchan1535 you are correct. need to go back to real artist era as '92 on was ruined by rap/hip hop infiltration of pop charts. all downhill after that.
like a prayer at 25!!!!! oh come on!! it is, nowadays, one of the most popular song ever; it´s eternal, timeless. That list really sucks that is why I personally do not believe in charts.
I'm so excited for the 1990s!

And just like that, the greatest decade ever has come to an end😢
Would you do the Decade End Chart next? (500 best chart performing songs) I’d imagine that would take a while and would be cut up into 5 videos.
Closing out a great year and a great decade of music!

Chicago has so many great songs but not Look Away. It sucks.

Just one error:How Can I Fall? spent 2 weeks at #3, not 3

C. Girl You Know Its True
@@BeckyAnn6879 Correct!
I was 17 girl in 1989
Bobby Brown wins 1989 with 5 songs in the top 100 for the year. Milli Vanilli and NKOTB are runner ups with 4 each.
1989 has some good songs, although #1 of the year sucks badly.

Totally agree! Music sucks from 91 onwards. Should go further retro instead back to the 60s &70s!

Should have been in the top 10 at least.
This is Billboard's Year End chart. Take issue with Billboard, not Chris
