- yukichigai's "Shifter" mod for Deus Ex:
www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1
Shifter is, as the author describes, a mod that attempts to take the "suck" out of Deus Ex. It makes a few changes and additions (including deleted content) without altering the core mechanics and level design.
This video only contains a few changes which I found particularly interesting. I highly encourage playing it for the full experience.
0:00 - Paul's "Blackjack" baton rewarded for non-lethal style
0:52 - Lebedev's "Magnum" pistol
1:21 - 10mm Explosive Ammo for pistols
1:48 - Precision Rifle
2:31 - Anna Navarre's reward for lethal style - 10mm Explosive Ammo
3:07 - Deleted content: Phone messages from NSF to Paul, and conversation between Lebedev and Tracer Tong
3:56 - Deleted content: Ford Schick at Smuggler's Lair (Augmentation Upgrade Canister)
5:38 - Janitor Dan Matsuma helps JC
6:03 - Improved Change Ammo key scrolls through different weapons of the same type
6:29 - New flare darts ignite targets
6:43 - Explosives do not gib targets instantly so you can loot corpses. MiB and Mechs will still self-destruct Игры
There's just some comfy/cozy feeling when playing Deus Ex.
IKR. Deus Ex is one of those games where you immerse yourself completely.
Its a game I play yearly.
agreed, now more than ever
The scaling IMHO is 100% accurate
"Blackjack" is a reference to the blackjack from Thief, the game Warren Spector made before Deus Ex
Glad that there are others who know that, too. Wish that the baton worked better in Deus Ex.
My favorite tool besides the water arrows.
Shame that I still haven't finished the Thief games. I lacked the patience back then when I played in high school.
My only defense is that I didn't understand the gameplay back then and I was burdened by personal issues in high school.
I was actually the same when I played Deus Ex in High School. I was running about treating it like a First Person Shooter, like Half-Life, and trying to shoot everyone, but the aiming system, and how it takes time to focus your aim kept fucking me over. I was like "fuck this game, it's broken and too hard". I also didn't pay attention to any of the story, so I kept getting killed off the fucking robot at the start on the docks LOL. I had no idea it was on my side, I thought everything was my enemy.
I really recommend going back and giving Thief a go. It'll be a little dated, graphically, of course. But with the nature of the game, if you play it Stealth Style, the A.I. doesn't come across too badly.
Thief 2, is the best I think, then maybe Dealy Shadows, followed by Thief: Gold.
I'm not overly keen on Thief 4, but it's still pretty decent. I haven't finished it though, but I don't game as much as I used to.
Wow, that Shick dialogue does extend the lore quite a bit. And it's a nice link with Human Revolution.
Miseric0rde its a cut content so its probably not going to be a thing
except jc didnt act like a little bitch when he found out
@@DevilWolf000 wasn't cut, it didn't work due to a bug.
@Shirane No Kappa lore wise it's okay. I wouldn't say it's a mess since there's no real retcons, honestly.
@Shirane No Kappa
"why the mechs are so over the place and the techno scifi architecture and building despite being 25 years ahead of DX"
Two things: different art direction, and because majority of the population is poor as shit to afford any. The ones who can are usually people who deal with Zyme or military operatives and government agents. And who can forget that one incident where Hugh Darrow went full retard and turned EVERY AUGMENTED PERSON WITH THE NEWEST ILLUMINATI CHIP INTO A FULL ON ZOMBIE(!), that sure would make people who aren't retarded worried (sure, they could sell new chips later and tell you that these ones will work and won't turn you into a zombie, but unless you're a dumb thug like the drug dealers in DX1, I doubt you would not be worried about it). And the reason for that is that HR went for a more mainstream cyberpunk aesthetic (and both games take place in an alt universe even with DX1's accurate predictions, and the advances in technology are explained in HR anyway) rather than DX1's more close to a grounded in reality type of approach. I personally don't mind it even if I prefer the DX1's approach better (I didn't play MD, but the architecture and design seems a lot more accurate to real life than the cyberpunk aesthetic of HR).
"it just doesn't make sense why augs are so populated with its cost (neuropoxin, limb amputee in addition of apparently dropping employement rate which itself doesn't make sense either)"
some people will consider the benefits of augs to outweigh the negatives. If you can do and process your job easier, that means you'll be a more wanted employer than your competitors. Hell, maybe some people went into it without even considering how much it would cost (people can be like that, sadly).
As for employment, I don't exactly remember stuff relating to that since it has been years since I played HR, so I can't really make a counter argument to that.
"also rioting over augmentation is just ridiculous itself"
that I agree with, actually. I feel like the riots should've had multiple reasons to them rather than just augmentations.
I don't really mind Adam personally, even design wise. At least he's more memorable than Alex, who can't even be saved by dumb catchphrases ("you picked the wrong person to mug, Punk!" or
"what does D stand for?"
"It stands for 'Don't Ask'" are pretty lame than even the worst catchphrases in the first and later game. At least everything relating to JC is pretty good).
When I read "Anna rewards you at HQ if she likes your style" I remembered that a UNATCO trooper at HQ will tell you that you and her make a cute couple. ^_^
I would have liked seeing some of the deleted content in the actual game. Seeing the janitor's note certainly tells players that even low-level staff members don't hate the Dentons even after they both defected. Meeting Ford Schick again without cheating him in would have also been a big plus since we actually get to confirm his fate and get an upgrade canister as well.
7:01: *_"DEUS EX, F--- YEAH!!!"_*
The janitor's note isn't deleted content - it's fan made.
@@tiotom9217 Thanks for clarifying. I only wish that JC did meet janitors and other maintenance staff when he was in UNATCO HQ. Maybe he would have learned more about the soda conspiracy, too, given that Gunther *DID* accuse the maintenance staff for rigging the vending machine.
@@tonyc.0451 funny, in revision, he had problems with a celling fan in his office, which causes him to accuse the maintenance man once again.
@@domasbaliulis23 I would have liked JC to meet UNATCO's maintenance staff at some point.
@@tonyc.0451 me too.
Holy crap that Ford Shick dialogue is actually pretty damn important!
I wish they left some of this awesome content in, its not like a game this good is ever going to be made these days.
I wish that they had their own models, you really have to inspect everything up close and might overlook these items, as they still look like the ubiquitous items they're "reskinned" from.
maybe somebody will make a remodel of them someday
so that's where they took that line from. "...i must be some kind of standard." I heard it in malkavian mod, and spent quite a lot of time trying to find the source in the game.
Maybe you remember the phrase "praire dog town" from Hermann. It's unused dialog too, from extended trainig course.

@@SU76M thanks
@@SU76M I fucking love you. Prairie dog town was messing with me for YEARS.
I think this modder likes Deus Ex even more than I do. = )
7:01 "UNATCUH! FUCK YEAH!"
During the training mission, there was supposed to be a section where Gunther teaches you how to use the Rocket Launcher. The voice files are still there but the map (or map section) is missing. Deus Ex was originally released on a single CD that was already overburned to about 800 megs, so I assume that's one reason why a lot of cut content didn't make it.
After all the years im still learning things about the game.
Deus ex will ever have a special place in my heart of games!
I've played the game so many times over the years and most of these findings are still new to me.
This stuff is part mod
I wonder why that exchange between Tong and Lebedev was cut from the final game
because the player would not understand it. It would be too confusing
Perhaps, yet by that logic the MJ12 facility in the New York sewers should have also been cut. I think it would have been interesting for first time players (not to mention it adds to the theme of conspiracy theories and secrets) and give them motivation to figure out who these two people are and if they even have any relevance to the story, i.e sideshadowing (not to mention it would be really cool for a player to meet Lebedev and then Tong and remember that they've actually heard one of their conversations and even cooler after Lebedev dies/gets captured the player now has the drive to find out who Tong is) and also for players who are replaying the game can appreciate the small hint to the later story now that they've already finished the game.
tl;dr foreshadowing and glimpses of the future plot/characters is pretty cool
player would probably assume the phone call was nonsense. When the player actually meets lebedev, he probably wouldnt connect his voice to the phone call.
but in a second playthrough, you would realize it... i tend to pass many clues in videogames but on a second playthrough i remember or discover something i missed... i needed to finish this game about 3 times in order to see everything... i don't know how i missed morpheus the first 2 times i played
theres an email from simons in the mj12 sewers and another talking about daedelus. its really cool reading them on your second playthrough where you understand what it's about
lol Manderley with US flag in his crotch
Lukas Skliuderis Uh... are you blind? That's definitely the ol' Stars and Stripes. UNATCO HQ is in New York, after all.
SorakuFett 'Merican, not Mexican.
No that was a cut model
I read Mexican too >_
That's just the kind of hardon Manderley has. It looks like the stars and stripes!
Well with that note proves that janitors can make a difference. Hate the system, stash the fall guy's gear, we are your best friend / wingmen

This only adds more power to the phrase - " Deus Ex, every time you play it, you discover something new".
This is a mod.
Well, this holds true to me, I am currently trying a no-kill, no-KO, no-alert and no-robot kill, in other words, pure stealth. I managed to get to the cathedral in Paris where Gunther is, I thought to myself: How on earth am I going to avoid him? I looked up walkthroughs and saw the best thing I could do was to just get to the computer as soon as possible and try to minimize the damage. So I don one of my Ballistic Armour suits, grabbed a fire extinguisher, turned on all my protection augments and prayed. I ran to the computer, screaming like a madman, did my business, readying for the fight, but when I turned around, he wasn't after me.....He just stood there, watching me, I even went to the transmission console on the other side of the room and he didn't trigger......I am not sure if that's a glitch or if I found a very weird way to avoid him altogether.

finally found a source of this line
THE ANONYMOUS GANG-BANGER OF THE 21ST CENTURY
Great video! 👍
A couple of potential implications of Schicks dialogue
The Dentons have the (inactive) virus, and their killswitch activates it
By having the virus at all times, the Dentons are effectively superspreaders among the population
That magnum pistol is a beast, i fully upgraded it during my trigger happy psycho playthrough.
The precision rifle is taken straight from Red Faction
the best weapon in that game, except the railgun. very underrated fps imo. invisible war ripped off the rail gun, along with many other fps games
The best weapon in multiplayer for sure
yeah. sad the multiplayer doesnt have much of a community anymore
great vid!
Haha, finally flare darts have a use
made a discovery a few weeks ago: if you keep leaving heavy shit on your office floor like a GEP gun, the janitor will get super pissed and instead try to kill you during your escape from UNATCO
evidence
You're a bad man, Agent Denton. My back is killing me.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
@@EricToTheScionti
Yeah.
Number one: That's Terror
Number two: That's Terror
is that so? in that case, i don't believe it.
The phone messages needed to stay in.
I always wondered why the janitor would sign his name on the note he left, it no doubt makes it easier for MJ12 to track him down.
Shifter could still use a few improvements, some of which I've suggested to Yukichigai already. For example, bodies changing their status from unconscious to dead if you screw with them too much (like it happens in the Nameless Mod), or augmentations actually resetting to Tech One when you swap them out for alternatives. It's already in the description, but the augs actually keep their tech level when you change them.
Though it has been a while since the last update, I am still optimistic for such improvements, including an option to enable gibs for explosive deaths. Shifter is my personal favorite mod since it acts more like an expansion pack, and I would probably play only that if it included the gib feature mentioned above
You must be playing the latest update, because it slows down for explosions. Do you have random loot inside baskets and other containers? That version added that. I reverted to the version before that, so that I don't get performance penalties.
Yeah, though it's not the lag that I have an issue with, it's just the fact that explosive deaths don't trigger gibs (6:45 on video). Enemies like MiB and Gunther explode not due to explosive weapons, but due to their self destruct mechanisms. This is actually really smart of Yukichigai, because it allows looting of corpses, but the gib deaths are a huge part of what got me into games like Deus Ex and UT. I know it's a really small and minor detail, but it's something which sparks a lot of joy in me :)
Yeah, but all versions of Shifter remove gib deaths, so you wouldn't be sacrificing much going back to the previous version. I enjoyed gib deaths a lot in Deus Ex too, but they're not really the most important aspect of the game haha
Ok scratch that - gibs are actually one of the top factors in the game hahaha
I play GMDX these days though, it's got a lot of what made Shifter good and more
In case the vanilla GotY Edition release gets an "Enhanced/Anniversary Edition", I fervently hope 3:07-5:37 are part of the package, plus the majority of fix-ups from the Community Update+Transcended+Confix mods and the Maps Patch.
Is there a way to combine the added content from Shifter into GMDX or Revision?
I wonder why they cut the last for Ford Shick dialogue. It is a very important info regarding the story of Deus Ex 1... and the World of Deus Ex. Especially the sentence : "It's (the gray death) part of your cell biology - the core component of your augmentations" as it could hint that the gray death is an evolved version of the Orchid neutralizing agent prototype which turned out into a deadly virus weapon for any human injected and which is seen in the prequel Mankind Divided.
try monitoring the call on the phone/keypad for a second time. ;D
What happens?
@@ccotunai not response,Silenced by MJ12 not doubt
Thumb up for the end ^^
So does Shifter do anything to counteract these new weapons completely breaking the game?
Not at all. Shifter doesn't change the mechanics just stick with gmdx
I found ford schick at the smugglers lair in GMDX after rescuing him without this mod.
Shifter is meant to be an expansion of the original game, GMDX is a different mod altogether. In the original DX, Schick is not present.
CatSkinCap Oh, oki.
That's cause Ford Schick never appearing is actually a bug and both mods fixes it, independently.
Pretty interesting stuff. Ford Shick was always in Hell's Kitchen part 2 and 3, tho, if you have the latest official map patches - which the GOTY Steam and GoG editions don't. Cool video, mod looks solid.
you can always patch it manually though like I did.
Yea, that's what I did as well. I think the only actual way to get the updated version from the get go is, ironically, getting the last box release on ebay. Abandonware, YAY!
nah theres a website that has a simple fix that updates the maps, just look it up.
You guys talking about a mod not a patch. The mod called Revision
@@DevilWolf000 no, no one is tslkimg about revision, that mod is cancer.
ford shick also has lines after the raid.
Huh, I never knew you could destroy the alarm panels. Or maybe I did, but it's been so long that I forgot
Anyone know if Dan Matsuda is a reference to anything?
2:22 Wait, you get skill points for getting headshots? I only do nonlethal take downs.
That's gotta be a Shifter mod thing. I never noticed it in regular Deus Ex.
You always get experience for eliminating an enemy, but it varies if it's lethal/non-lethal, stealth/loud or headshot/non-headshot
Shifter is a great mod! I wonder if it is compatible with GMDX?
Interestingly, Deus Ex: Revision comes with the option to use shifter. I will say that so far, blackjack has been a valuable asset to my current playthrough.
there's 1080p and 480p but no 720p? wth?
especially suxx since I regularly watch all videos in 720p
i dont get it anything, since i try shifter mod and dont know which is work i try to find pauls baton and magnum and more makes me confuse all these
is there any way to turn back the "instant gib death"?
Does the 10mm Explosive Ammo able to destroy small or big robots?🤔
Cat how do you like GMDX? After playing it I can't go back to Vanilla.
Tungsten or osmium is more dense than lead
3:55 needs to be restored on the vanilla/GotY Edition. Really bugs me and others a lot.
6:34 well, i was expect this in deus ex goty edition.. but, well.. 😂 can i know which version you play to create this content? i wonder about water cooler talk, too..
and don't forget about the ghost JC denton
batons weight the same :D
The items don't really have a purpose except to unhelpfully clutter the game and make it easier in a bad way. The story elements though, why in the world were those cut?
And I really like the enhanced 'change ammo' button.
What does the Shick Augmentation do?
it's an upgrade canister, no an augmentation
will this work with gmdx?
Flare darts. That's horrifying
where do you get 10mm explosive ammo?
Naval Base tanker armory, or after your first visit to NYC when Anna likes your style.

I never liked the sniper rifle scope. The field of view is that small circle in the center. The developers should have made the circle a lot larger with a variable zoom and not have it move around so much when trying to get a precise aim. So I never used the scope but used the crosshairs instead.
the "moving around" gets less and less as you upgrade the skill. At master, it is always completely still unless you move it yourself.
Erm... the blackjack has always been there for me. i suppose i should try a less humanitarian playstyle.
paul uses a chinese broad sword not a baton.
