- Lara Jacobs was born into an artistic family. At the tender age of six she began performing and touring as a trapeze artist with her parents' theatre, Rigolo Nouveau Cirque. When she was just 16 Lara ventured to New York City and enrolled at the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Centre. She later took her love of dance to Istanbul where she trained in dervish dance, a traditional Islamic dance also known as Sufi whirling which consists of spinning one's body in repetitive circles. With this new talent, she began performing a solo fire burning skirt routine for Rigolo Nouveau Cirque, numerous galas worldwide, as well as, the famous German circus, Circus Roncalli.
In 2010 Lara was asked to audition for the role of Balance Goddess in Cirque de Soleil's Amaluna. The unique act has the Balance Goddess creating a world in equilibrium with a mobile made of thirteen palm leaf ribs. The routine is carried out to a spare soundtrack emphasized only by the sound of her breathing. Her movements are slow, deliberate and almost meditative as she concentrates all her attention on building this structure, reminding us of the fragile nature of harmony. The famous balancing performance was created and originated by her Father, who continues to perform the act around the world.

I just wanna say thank you TED x for giving me this opportunity, thank you Canada & of cours the Cirque family, Amaluna & the IHQ but most of all thanks to my parents who taught me to be an artist and my father who is a great teacher!
This was absolutely amazing to watch xxx
Her performance was so delicate that when I accidentally shook my computer, for a split second, I thought the structure was gonna fall apart. This thing is really intense.
They say it really is as delicate as a feather.
It speaks in a language that everyone understands.
And it tells me that even a feather can sway a mountain.
I thought the language was physics or a branch of science and mathematics but I guess I'm wrong
I remember when I saw her live during a big top show. That place has well over 500 people there and it's was the quietest place I have ever seen. No one wanted to even breathe wrong and throw her off. We all say there in stunned silence watching this and when she stood it on its own and it stayed the place went absolutely insane with applause. It's still one of the coolest memories I have of these shows
I saw you perform in Atlanta this past week and I was holding my breath the entire time. My 11yo daughter had seen you online already and said "the best part is at the end!". You brought much joy to my whole family, thank you.
It is beautiful to see that level of mental control. Humans are amazing.
What control? Come again :PP
JayPixx77
JayPixx77
SOME humans are amazing.
I saw Lara's act as part of Cirque du Soleil's Amaluna last Saturday and it was my favourite act, she was mesmerising and the whole audience was holding their breath. Pure beauty.
I just can not even believe a single person in this world could be self-centered enough to say a damn thing bad about this in any way shape or form.
My mind was fucking blown.
To be completely honest there are NO words in the English language to describe this.
I bow.
But in German : Zu Dramatisch und nervig
Julian Aschenbrenner Hahhahahhaaa! Well played! ([ :
I cannot believe you do not understand how this could be considered creepy to some people. Perhaps you sir, are self-centered for thinking that your opinions should be shared by everyone just because you liked it.
Devan Ward awestruck..enthralled...somewhere along those lines?
I bet she's amazing at Jenga
Mesmerizing ... what skill, beauty, and talent ... Bravo!
I come down on the side of all those who see the beauty in every breath of this presentation. It is, in my mind, also a metaphor for the difficulty we all have in balancing life so that we also find in it all the beauty it holds. For those who came down on the other side of the equation I would suggest that perception is projection. When there is no beauty in us it is difficult to see beauty in anything else. When there is no mystery in our imagination it is equally difficult to be awed by the by the mystery of creativity in others. Bravo to this beautiful Ted dance.
beautiful comment
Absolutely!
The loud breathing is how she centres and grounds herself. Most people could not do that breath is life hence the level of skill she shows the audience. Has everyone missed how incredible this is. Try holding your hands up for any length of time with out balancing anything. Good luck with that. It takes so much power.
I just saw this life yesterday in Amaluna. It was my favorite part of an astounding show !!
!!Qué talento corporal, es tan único! GRACIAS!!
Lara, it was wonderful getting to watch you do this. The suspense, the complete smoothness of all your actions, and then showing the weight of the feather.
Just beautiful. Congratulations!
I realize all the precision work, as well as the isolation movements, and along with such grace... Really, really mesmerizing!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. After that, words are inadequate, but my tears speak an eloquence. Thank you so much.
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much, for so much love. You are art, a joy to behold XXX
Jesus dude lol
If only there was some sort of filter to just discard hateful/useless/egotistic/unconstructive comments. Imagine Plato being asked "what is the point of your philosophies, dude?. It doesn't help anyone, doesn't solve any REAL problem". How could he explain himself? Maybe he could, but he wouldn't. Simply discard such critique and pray that lesser beings shall accept more light some day, by some miracle. And focus your energy on continuing your journey.
At least maybe those people externalise all their unger and criticism here and not on their family, woman or whomever ! At the end all is for good...
what an impressive talent with superb concentration !!!!!!!! love it!!!
Lara, you left me speechless in Denver. Beauty beyond words.
Just prior to watching this I spilled my god damn cup of tea.
Now I feel like twice the ass.
haha nice one!
Breathtaking ! ❤
This makes perfect sense, but it looks like it doesn't make any fucking sense and it's aggravating.
No lollygagging!
That's Skyrim.
close enough haha i saw an imperial
Good.
Jomama7272 you know I too talked of Luara Jacobs in such ways, until i took an arrow to they knee. now my commenting days are over.
I can only imagine how much discipline it must take to learn this skill. This is so inspirational!
why cant people just watch and get amazed? i mean, i can almost certainly guarantee that there is no one who can even try 2 stack 3of them here.
wonder y people cant admit other's talent
also wonder how those rude people will react if i insult any talent they might even have
This video proves life is nothing more than a balancing act and by using your head you can accomplish amazing things.
I love how she picks up the sticks (to me, they look like dinosaur bones) with her feet, and I love her breath and concentration. The outfit is also beautiful. All of it, just lovely. :)
The sticks are palm leaf ribs.
You are an inspiration, Lara!!! I was so moved by your act. I want to see it again with my daughter before the Cirque leaves Denver. I hope I can! Your performance creates a beautiful energy that surrounds you and reaches to the audience. At the very end, when it's complete, and you smile, the sense of spiritual release is amazing. I cried as well!!!! Bravo and thank you for sharing your art and your heart with us!!
i can do that, here hold my beer
Lol
+drCasey555 Lo| really funny
Stfu always with the beer
Ha ha ha ha ha
drCasey555,
LMAO!
Enjoyed this act so much as part of Amaluna in Atlanta last night. Amazing.
Goddamn, this was great. However, I feel like one of the few who think so. Just because this may not necessarily create a new idea or you may not think of this as a talent, doesn't mean it isn't. The amount of tension just watching and the amount of focus, strength and stamina she has is incredible. Then again, people will always have the urge to talk shit and label it as "the truth". Yeah, the breathing was a little annoying, but DAMN the act was awesome.
I would have tripped walking out. Color Mr impressed! I was in a trance and relaxed the entire time.
when i reached the end of thid video i was like"HOLY CRAP" i cant even balance a pencil on my finger
@Cringelord Goddess if you find the balancing point, you can always balance the pencil on your finger 100% at a time... unless there’s an earthquake then yeah-
Not saying a word she illustrates every principle i feel TEDx is about. Achievement, Art, Beauty, Breathing.Creativity, Concentration, Control, Determination, Endeavour, her Feminity is one of clarity strength and of balance. Practice of all of there principles shows body mind and spirit harmoniously synchronised. I cried!
Danke ist wirklich einmalig. ;-))
BRAVO!! Breath.. Balance... BEING... extraordinaire...!!!
Holy shit I don't even... she's a goddess alright.
Excellence. It's creation is remarkable and this performance was beautiful.
She is also the goddess of beauty I think
Mr boner in the house
•o• Hoodlumz
+Петър Петров HA No
Wonderful and mind Blowing! May God give Her good wealth&Health! Inspiration to all Human Beings.
AMAZING
Robert Trindade SUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER DUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Complex pretty cool, i guess
I went to the show in Denver last night. I have to say, I was amazed at this balancing performance. So much so, that I had to look this performer up. At the show, I didnt know what to expect, so I was shocked. Its was so quiet during her performance and she rocked it. incredible.
does anyone else noticed that on each this thing was a mark where to put other one ? or im here only one who noticed that ? with thouse marks is much easyer to balance.
its some tape around the stick come on man I don't think many people could do that
shes not gonna take the risk of the whole thing toppling during a performance it's just to make sure it all works
you have no idea what are u talking about! it will be smarter for you to just like this and show some respect !
Defbeat Killa There's nothing difficult about this. At all. It looks cool, it sounds incredibly stupid with all of the huffing and puffing she's doing, but there's not a thing that's difficult about it. It's all incredibly basic and simple physics.
You know, I would, but I don't look as good in a gold sequin bikini and a cape as she does.
That was a holy wow and inspiration coming from someone who also is a balance queen that was very uplifting thank you for your performance
That was great. Why be bothered by the breathing? It is natural and shows the level of concentration needed. Try just holding one balanced item over your head for two minutes and you will get an idea of the body control needed.
Was ein Mensch schaffen kann, und wie schnell es doch zerstört wird!
Just saw this in Minneapolis as well. I was blown away and mesmerized by this.
Everything is balanced : Everything physical (matter/energy) goes back and forth in balanced circles, cycles or the equivalent. Birth-death, young-old, big-small, strong-weak, start-stop, up-down, rich-poor, beginning-end, fast-slow, hot-cold, pain-pleasure, win-lose, day-night, full-empty, high-low, out-in, success-failure, united-divided, give-receive, creation-destruction, on-off, *positive-negative*, etc. page 3 of the Present
Are you aware of the Balance ?
Google Truth Contest and read *THE PRESENT* to know it all.
Beautiful performer and performance.
this woman is fucking awesome!
ikr
Utterly mezmerising. Poetry in motion and a meditation all at once. I am quite surprised that there are so many negative comments; but this is yt and trolls will be trolls. Sad for them.
Do you have any plans to visit the Adelaide Festival of arts or the Fringe? I'd love to see this live.
a bit odd that this video went online just 1 day after the woman named Miyoko Shida preformed this same art piece.
I know how it's done but i will not spoil it for anyone here.... The effect is what counts.... Atmospheric.... Bravo!!
Not much of a TED TALK this time.
Amazing ! A perfect example of how science and talent can go together !
whats with the breathing?!?!?
Lmao! Same thoughts
i understand that part of it, thats normal but the fact that she had the mic set up so that it would pic up 100% of it a play it super loud through the speakers?
kyle Joslin Its to give a sort of alien kind of atmosphere.
well, she must have had an orgasm at the end
kyle Joslin its so she doesn't make it all fall apart before shes done, also it gives an effect.
I can't believe I just watched that. One of the most incredible things I have ever seen
And I thought I was good when I balanced my pencil on my pinky...
Yep u sure are amazing you deserve a medal lol
maia fern
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
Thank you Lara for your artistic performance...this is so different than those that balance spinning saucer dishes on stick poles...
Many blessings
Im in that part of youtube again
+Gaige Yarling What part? The cool part?
INDEED ... the supernal of Activate ~ Balance ~ Commune ... the deliverance Breath by Breath by Breath... motion, stillness, mastery.
BRAVO~~
Yeahp, the breathing is annoying because you can tell it's forced and not genuine. This is a great piece of art and it was created by Maedir Eugster.
***** What source says that she requires that sort of breathing to do this though?
There's also an unnecessary reverb effect applied to it, so even if it was real, it's certainly not to show that special breathing needed to be done, since it doesn't need reverb to do that.
As far as I can, tell Miyoko Shida keeps her mouth mostly closed during it, and doesn't seem to do breathing like this.
*****
Where did I do that?
Maybe you're referring to CristianKirk?
The fact that they don't like her breathing is not discounting nor disrespecting her talent. It is pointing out a superfluous aspect of the performance which seems entirely unrelated to her talent.
***** look, the more difficult the balancing the higher the heart rate incvreases. so making some special forced breathing method at certain intervals makes a big difference as you would not want the increased hearrt rate to destabilize the balancing process.
dont believe me?...try it out yourself and u will fail if u breathe faaster as yor heart rate increases
if you can't tell it's a recording then I dunno what to say.
***** Totally that should go with every (talent-related) video
I saw her live in London at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015 performing for the Cirque du Soleil. Breathtaking!
curved, long sticks. I'd like to see her do that with straight ones. see, with all the weight pulling the sticks DOWN at the ends of them, there's no way they could fall. They'd have to be pulled harder than gravity alone and as long as she doesn't make a sudden upward or spin move, the very weight of the one stick keeps the other in place. it's like a bad magic trick. Nice physique, though.
You can talk about that, only if you're able to balance 3 of those curved sticks you fucking maggot.
+Eminem3Rapper And you can only remove a brain tumor if you've HAD a brain tumor.
wow. .... that was deep XD
+TruthSurge
Id like to see you do this.... Its just a bad magic trick right?
No skill involved....
+The Comments Troll Strikes go look up "strawman argument". Then go get a GED at least.
I love Amaluna! So happy they decided to highlight the most unique act from the show. The balance goddess act leaves everyone holding their own breath at the end.
Wasn't there a Japanese woman that did this first? I seem to remember a video a couple of years ago. That breathing is annoying. Stupid effect. It's distracting and doesn't really add anything to the experience. Some well chosen music would have been more pleasant.
hueseph Yeah, and the Japanese woman did that under 8 minutes.
hueseph the japanese woman also coming from Rigolo Nouveau Cirque.....this performer Lara as the description said...." The famous balancing performance was created and originated by her Father, who continues to perform the act around the world"
KINSLINK
Ok. Thanks for the clarification.
The breathing was just... Her... Breathing...
I'd imagine it takes a lot of focus to do this :P
You know they have amplitude faders for that mic right. We don't need to hear it. It's a cheap effect afaic. It just takes away from the performance.
Stunning performance. Saw you tonight in Minneapolis and I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. I was absolutely riveted and you left me breathless. So beautiful.
How many years did it take the monks to teach her this?
After watching that famous clip with that asian woman who is impeccable, humble and all zen....this clip from the first frame made me realise how we white people are fuckin theatrical about everything and make it all about the doer rather than the process itself....I'm not disparaging her skills; it's just an observation:)
Randy Simmons this is tricks
Melhor per do performance que já assisti
I am pretty sure 'balancing' involves a support point being below an objects center of gravity, not above it. Thus the Balance Goddess needs a bit of remedial physics, as well as the audience.
Verdict: "Neat" but overblown.
Something makes me think that it's actually a very heavy, lead rod decorated to look like a feather, and that the sticks are grooved to mark where to stack them. And although they are appear scattered on the grown they are actually marked.
The hardest job she has is keeping her balance while using her foot to pick up the pieces.
the Asian lady a lot more graceful
+Proverbs 16:4 KJV I saw (on facebook) an Asian lady doing the same balance act, but she was wearing a very simple long dress, and the didn't make such noises, instead the background consisted of soft music. I didn't know she can be found on RUclips. The whole thing had a humble feeling, and the way you describe it, being graceful, is the word I was trying to find.
OMG
Definitely straight to the list of one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Humans and their talents! Wow!
needs to work for riotgames XD
your comment is way underrated x)
likes nidalee
good show
cough *Aphelios* cough *Diana* cough *Olaf* cough *Senna*
Oh and Trundle and Rumble
Nicely done, Lara. You are so great on that difficult moves. I'm so happy and proud of you!! Keep doing at it!! Happy New Year!!
2 minutes in im like WTF
10 minutes in im like NAAAAAAAAHHHHH
Just went to Amaluna and saw this show - she is amazing !
I bet she couldn't balance my accounts....
OddCereal she wouldn't want to balance your stank ass account either way
Impresionante ! muy bueno.
Stolen from the original artist.
Her father?
No and Japanese artist
so? who gives a shit. we create things for others to enjoy. imitation is a form of flattery
You did not create this, a lady that is Japanese did and did it far better far more gracefully as well
There is ZERO comparison! Art is art and driving is a tool by which to travel. This was stolen from a Japanese ARTIST.
That was bloody insane! That girl is amazingly talented!
and i thought i had too much time on my hands
TheJennRogue is it before the next election (nov 2016)
This woman is awesome :)
...
The most beautiful performance art I've ever seen. Loved it ! ! !
TEDx Breathes
Absolutely beautiful performance. After seeing Amaluna, I missed seeing your performance of this. The other artist was good as well, but you are the original and I felt the tension the entire video... I hope to see you in another show soon!
Oh my god I couldn't even watch this, that breathing was driving me nuts. shame since I love Ted Talks
+Pickle Master Don't worry - you can't be blamed for not having the out-of-the-box thinking required to turn off the sound.
+Limerick Goblin burrrrrrrn
She has a talent of pure mindfulness ✨️ 💜
im going to the bathroom, ill be back in 3-5 minutes......
To balance the soap in your ass?
hahaha!! That tickled me
Lol. Just messing up. 👍
Hahaha!! i liked it! ;)
Andy B UK you cant do it with Q tips
Wow, that was beautiful. I don't usually watch things like this but I'm glad I did because it was amazing and just plain beautiful and I really love it. It awakened the true art lover that I am. She is amazing and beautiful
Miyoko Shida is better
That was absolutely breathtaking!
@Lara Jacobs dont you get physically and mentally exhausted after every act?
Also, has the whole structure crashed midway while doing a live show?
That was so artistic. Awesome talent.
yes i get very tired, but just like all other performers, it's normal i guess, yes sometimes it falls.
I hope you get to perform in the Philippines. You are amazing!
Didn't she just copy the Japanese woman?
no, we taught her.
Lara Jacobs It's published earlier though!
Do some research shawty 😄
So breathtaking! Saw it live in one of their shows and the audience was holding each other's arms and their breaths, it really seemed beyond real
2 minutes in... WTF am I watching?
15 minutes in... WTF did I just watch.
I just saw her perform this in Atlanta last night with Cirque's "Amaluna." It was even more impressive seeing it live.
She'd make a great waitress
I saw you in Minneapolis the other evening. Absolutely mesmerizing!
its a fucking ted talk.. what is a damn performance artist doing here...
+Zap Zap TED sure aint what it used to be. I found this beautiful and entertaining but I hear you. TED has been stretching a lot in the last couple years. Don't be surprised if it turns into an infomercial or a talent show.
+Kevin Onorato This was a TEDx they are independently organized separate from the official TED talks. They have looser rules about what is allowed to be a "talk."
+Aaron Innes OK cool. I will remember that separation now. and again, the performance was great just clearly not the original TED. Now I know.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design.
This performance was 1. Entertainment 2. Design 3. Technological
+Zap Zap this is actually pretty clearly called a "ted event"..
And how could you possibly be mad at what she did?
let me guess... you didn't watch the whole video
Mental balance over physical balance. Amazing. Beautiful.
Glad I skipped to the end. Wasting 15 minutes watching this would have been almost as stupid as wasting a portion of your life learning how to balance sticks and feathers.
Enderman9000 yeah I got that part, so why is it also on TED? What idea here is worth sharing? Practice any ridiculous task long enough and rich white folks will pay u to do it in makeup and costume and call it "performance art". I agree this is an impressive feat but its also completely pointless and doesn't really teach anyone anything. Also the breathing would have been really difficult to listen to for 15 straight minutes. It was overly obnoxious after the first 2 minutes.
This is low level street performance elevated to the top tier just because Curque du Soleil had 15 minutes of time to kill in their latest tour.
I'm happy for the girl and totally support her in taking advantage of her situation. I'd no doubt do the same thing and have no shame in raking in mindless bored rich people's money. But I sure as hell wouldn't feel good about wasting people's time at a TED talk.
Enderman9000 see first comment about wasting a large portion of ones life.
Enderman9000 and she just wants to balance sticks on a stage largely reserved for people curing diseases, inventing incredible things, and sharing powerful world changing ideas.
Still glad I skipped through to the end.
Enderman9000 I know a kid that can fit 20 toothpicks in his left nostril. That's talent! Maybe he should spend 20 minutes on TED talks huffing and puffing dramatically adding in one more each minute.
Enderman9000 I really don't think I'd be that interested either way.
