  • Lara Jacobs was born into an artistic family. At the tender age of six she began performing and touring as a trapeze artist with her parents' theatre, Rigolo Nouveau Cirque. When she was just 16 Lara ventured to New York City and enrolled at the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Centre. She later took her love of dance to Istanbul where she trained in dervish dance, a traditional Islamic dance also known as Sufi whirling which consists of spinning one's body in repetitive circles. With this new talent, she began performing a solo fire burning skirt routine for Rigolo Nouveau Cirque, numerous galas worldwide, as well as, the famous German circus, Circus Roncalli.
    In 2010 Lara was asked to audition for the role of Balance Goddess in Cirque de Soleil's Amaluna. The unique act has the Balance Goddess creating a world in equilibrium with a mobile made of thirteen palm leaf ribs. The routine is carried out to a spare soundtrack emphasized only by the sound of her breathing. Her movements are slow, deliberate and almost meditative as she concentrates all her attention on building this structure, reminding us of the fragile nature of harmony. The famous balancing performance was created and originated by her Father, who continues to perform the act around the world.

    I remember when I saw her live during a big top show. That place has well over 500 people there and it's was the quietest place I have ever seen. No one wanted to even breathe wrong and throw her off. We all say there in stunned silence watching this and when she stood it on its own and it stayed the place went absolutely insane with applause. It's still one of the coolest memories I have of these shows

    I come down on the side of all those who see the beauty in every breath of this presentation. It is, in my mind, also a metaphor for the difficulty we all have in balancing life so that we also find in it all the beauty it holds. For those who came down on the other side of the equation I would suggest that perception is projection. When there is no beauty in us it is difficult to see beauty in anything else. When there is no mystery in our imagination it is equally difficult to be awed by the by the mystery of creativity in others. Bravo to this beautiful Ted dance.

    The loud breathing is how she centres and grounds herself. Most people could not do that breath is life hence the level of skill she shows the audience. Has everyone missed how incredible this is. Try holding your hands up for any length of time with out balancing anything. Good luck with that. It takes so much power.

    If only there was some sort of filter to just discard hateful/useless/egotistic/unconstructive comments. Imagine Plato being asked "what is the point of your philosophies, dude?. It doesn't help anyone, doesn't solve any REAL problem". How could he explain himself? Maybe he could, but he wouldn't. Simply discard such critique and pray that lesser beings shall accept more light some day, by some miracle. And focus your energy on continuing your journey.

    Goddamn, this was great. However, I feel like one of the few who think so. Just because this may not necessarily create a new idea or you may not think of this as a talent, doesn't mean it isn't. The amount of tension just watching and the amount of focus, strength and stamina she has is incredible. Then again, people will always have the urge to talk shit and label it as "the truth". Yeah, the breathing was a little annoying, but DAMN the act was awesome.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 10 лет назад +1

      ***** What source says that she requires that sort of breathing to do this though?
      There's also an unnecessary reverb effect applied to it, so even if it was real, it's certainly not to show that special breathing needed to be done, since it doesn't need reverb to do that.
      As far as I can, tell Miyoko Shida keeps her mouth mostly closed during it, and doesn't seem to do breathing like this.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 10 лет назад

      *****
      Where did I do that?
      Maybe you're referring to CristianKirk?
      The fact that they don't like her breathing is not discounting nor disrespecting her talent. It is pointing out a superfluous aspect of the performance which seems entirely unrelated to her talent.

    • @oilonze
      @oilonze 10 лет назад +1

      ***** look, the more difficult the balancing the higher the heart rate incvreases. so making some special forced breathing method at certain intervals makes a big difference as you would not want the increased hearrt rate to destabilize the balancing process.
      dont believe me?...try it out yourself and u will fail if u breathe faaster as yor heart rate increases

    curved, long sticks. I'd like to see her do that with straight ones. see, with all the weight pulling the sticks DOWN at the ends of them, there's no way they could fall. They'd have to be pulled harder than gravity alone and as long as she doesn't make a sudden upward or spin move, the very weight of the one stick keeps the other in place. it's like a bad magic trick. Nice physique, though.

    I am pretty sure 'balancing' involves a support point being below an objects center of gravity, not above it. Thus the Balance Goddess needs a bit of remedial physics, as well as the audience.

    Something makes me think that it's actually a very heavy, lead rod decorated to look like a feather, and that the sticks are grooved to mark where to stack them. And although they are appear scattered on the grown they are actually marked.

      +Proverbs 16:4 KJV I saw (on facebook) an Asian lady doing the same balance act, but she was wearing a very simple long dress, and the didn't make such noises, instead the background consisted of soft music. I didn't know she can be found on RUclips. The whole thing had a humble feeling, and the way you describe it, being graceful, is the word I was trying to find.

      +Zap Zap TED sure aint what it used to be. I found this beautiful and entertaining but I hear you. TED has been stretching a lot in the last couple years. Don't be surprised if it turns into an infomercial or a talent show.

    • @velocibadgery
      @velocibadgery 8 лет назад +2

      +Kevin Onorato This was a TEDx they are independently organized separate from the official TED talks. They have looser rules about what is allowed to be a "talk."

    • @kevinonorato7223
      @kevinonorato7223 8 лет назад

      +Aaron Innes OK cool. I will remember that separation now. and again, the performance was great just clearly not the original TED. Now I know.

    Glad I skipped to the end. Wasting 15 minutes watching this would have been almost as stupid as wasting a portion of your life learning how to balance sticks and feathers.

    • @anthonyvoskuhl9200
      @anthonyvoskuhl9200 9 лет назад +2

      Enderman9000 yeah I got that part, so why is it also on TED? What idea here is worth sharing? Practice any ridiculous task long enough and rich white folks will pay u to do it in makeup and costume and call it "performance art". I agree this is an impressive feat but its also completely pointless and doesn't really teach anyone anything. Also the breathing would have been really difficult to listen to for 15 straight minutes. It was overly obnoxious after the first 2 minutes.
      This is low level street performance elevated to the top tier just because Curque du Soleil had 15 minutes of time to kill in their latest tour.
      I'm happy for the girl and totally support her in taking advantage of her situation. I'd no doubt do the same thing and have no shame in raking in mindless bored rich people's money. But I sure as hell wouldn't feel good about wasting people's time at a TED talk.

    • @anthonyvoskuhl9200
      @anthonyvoskuhl9200 9 лет назад +1

      Enderman9000 see first comment about wasting a large portion of ones life.

    • @anthonyvoskuhl9200
      @anthonyvoskuhl9200 9 лет назад

      Enderman9000 and she just wants to balance sticks on a stage largely reserved for people curing diseases, inventing incredible things, and sharing powerful world changing ideas.
      Still glad I skipped through to the end.

    • @anthonyvoskuhl9200
      @anthonyvoskuhl9200 9 лет назад +1

      Enderman9000 I know a kid that can fit 20 toothpicks in his left nostril. That's talent! Maybe he should spend 20 minutes on TED talks huffing and puffing dramatically adding in one more each minute.

    • @anthonyvoskuhl9200
      @anthonyvoskuhl9200 9 лет назад

      Enderman9000 I really don't think I'd be that interested either way.
