Many people have done this song, but this is THE version to listen to.
Absolutely....
They have a version where they BOTH do it together. And thats by FAR the best one. They sound even better together
Percy Sledge was incredible and of course this is the BEST version of the song
He does a good job on this song...now to find a GREAT job on this you have to listen to Home Free sing it. TRULY FANTASTIC.
This is the version. The Best Version. Percy's voice cuts through your soul...It's real
By far the best version of this song, hands down.
Percy sang it from deep, deep down inside.
Michael Bolton sang it like his head was about to explode.
Totally agree. Percy sang from the heart.
Absolutely. Michael Bolton belted it, but I don't think he actually *felt* it.
Bolton's got no soul
Thats some crazy shit to say lol. Listen to the version of them both singing it together on stage.
@@GeneralBuckNaked Bolton struggled to sing every note-no comparison, Sledge owns this song. Home Free's Austin is the second-best version, imo.
Nobody does it better than Percy. This song started the Muscle Shoels sound. Fantastic reaction
Michael Bolton cries this song. Percy Sledge lets it pour out of his heart.
Imagine if they had the audio recording quality of today when Percy Sledge performed this.
it wouldn't sound any better than this dummy.
To me this is the best version, out in 67 or 68. Great timeless song,! The follow up song Take Time to Know Her is very good. Usually follow ups aren't the best, this is. Worth checking out even if you don't care to react to it.
I think one thing that early R&B and soul singers shared and which made their singing styles unique is that many learned to sing in church and they brought that gospel feeling to their secular music whether they were expressing joy or sorrow.
The same sinners that played, sang, and danced in the juke joints on Saturday nights would be in the church choirs, bands, and audiences hungover and seeking redemption on Sunday mornings. :-)
Please check out anything by Bill Withers, preferably from his "Live at Carnegie Hall" performance. Mahalo.
Yes, the original is definitely the best! Percy Sledge makes you really feel it! Another artist you should react to is Bobby Blue Bland singing Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City. He'll make you feel it as well. Enjoyed your comments too!
I grew up down in Beaumont when the Boogie Kings were playing over in Louisiana on the weekends at the Texas Pelican. The Winter brothers were beginning to make a name for themselves; some tremendous music came out of those parts...and still does. I was in high school then and just beginning to turn into a "reasonable" guitar player. : )
@@bluarcher5941 That's great! And yeah, a lot of great music is still coming out of those parts. If you're playing the guitar "reasonably" well, you must be pretty good. There's a lot of folks that wish they could play "reasonably" well😅
@@miltonslocum8957 thanks...mainly playing a clasical in the bedroom nowadays, but still have a LP and a Marshall if something comes about in the future. enjoy ur day : )
@@bluarcher5941 You're welcome...have a good day too and a successful New Year as well:)
Percy had some Oomph. Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down.Exactly right
This original is the best; I remember it as a kid. I was in my late 20's when Michael Bolton's came out, so that version is what I've heard most recently, and he did a fantastic job too. Thanks for the great reaction Angela!
His voice delivers the depth of this song!
Thanks.
Be safe
this is one of my favorite songs EVER....if you hear a cover...it will never be as good as the original by Percy....its timeless...thanks for reacting to this song...love love love it
There is something near genius about these amazing mid-1960's soul artists. I mean those other than Motown -- which was groundbreaking for its musical artistry and invention -- but also sort of homogenized for a broader listening audience. I mean other soul artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Ben E. King and Jackie Wilson.
Atlantic Records!
Percy recorded this at Mussle Shoals Alabama .
You would probably enjoy the artist Lee Moses. He was a relatively unknown R&B artist from the 70s from Atlanta.
Listen to his song " Adorable One" from his album Time and Place. That's the best version of it Imo. The whole album is great. His cover of California Dreaming, which is on it, is amazing.
My dad has this song downloaded on his car and it’s an instant classic. His car contains of favorited 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s classics.
What a fantastic artist. Iv been listening to song for years.
Hi, Angela. Once again you're correct about original versions. I've heard a few versions over the years but Percy's will always be the top for me. Stay safe 👍🏽 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I sooo love this sound! Always have!
My cousin, who plays drums in our band, was Percy's drummer back in the 70s when he was on tour. He said the women in the audience would go absolutely crazy when he performed this song. According to him, after a show,
the line of ladies standing outside his tour bus was exceptionally long. The women loved Percy, and apparently he loved em back.
The band didn't call him Percy, they called him Booty Sledge 😆
You’re absolutely feeling this song. Thank you for covering it in your special, perceptive way. I love both versions. You are right. This original by Percy Sledge does make us feel it more. Very good. ❤
Well said. So good to see someone reacting to the original version of this song. One of the greatest love songs ever written. Yes I have loved someone like that.
This is just perfection. Lovin' eyes can never see. Just perfect
There are many great lines in this song. That line right there has always stuck out for me also. One line that encompasses the whole totality of the meaning of the song. That line is a pretty powerful statement. Lovin’ eyes can never see.
This song made me LITERALLY scream and cry it sounded so sad when I was about 4 years old. I was listening to my mom's 60s/early 70s records.
Being from the same town. I remember percy sledge singing at the gerry lane chevy dealership every year. I went to high school with his daughters.
Played at every Friday and Saturday night dance coast to coast
through the 60s, 70s, 80s and then some..
This version was featured in the very popular show "The Wonder Years"...a fairly large chunk of my generation think of Kevin and Winnie's first kiss, when this song plays. [also Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight".
Percy does the best version ever. So soulful.
That song was instrumental in establishing the famous Muscle Shoals recording studio.
A few years later they put Aretha Franklin on the map. As Bono put it, “we showed up expecting a band from MoTown and it was 4-5 white guys who looked like they bagged groceries”.
Everyone recorded there, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Sections earned 75 Gold and Platinum hits!
one of the all time great studio bands.
Percy Sledge got his start in Muscle Shoals, Alabama......the documentrary on the magic of Muscle Shoals is fantastic! You won't believe the names that got their start there! Happy New Year! David
And the stage band " The Swampers " have been on more gold and platinum albums than anyone else
The best "slow dance nude with your partner and the candles lit" song ever recorded!!!
Always loved this song great reaction!! Thanks
An all-vocal country band called, Home Free, did a cover of this song. If you like Harmonies you will love these guys. Any instrument sounds you hear are made by their beat boxer.
Man this was the all time belly rubber when I was in Jr. High
Born in 1952, this was in the soundtrack of my life, thanks for covering and fully understanding.
THE BEST version no one but no one can do it as well
Percy doing this song still gives me chills, even after all these years. Something about him doing it in Db just rings, also...not a normal key that you hear. I'm sure the session guys were giving him the side-eye in the studio when they laid that one down. Your take on it is super, Angela. Love your channel.
This is one of my Favorite Old school artists he has so much soul in his voice This was probably his most popular songs.
A couple of my favorites are
Take time to know her
Dark end of the street.
yeah that too. When I was a teen I had one of the many Greatest Hits 8 tracks and I wore that thing out a couple of times. I knew every dying from start to finish.
Plain and simple just good music for the soul!
Ohh Take time to know her...
Just so many great songs.
Yes, he sings a universal, heartfelt sentiment.
This is the true version sung from the heart of this soulful king.
even as a kid I knew ole Percy had wisdom in this song. I think every young man should hear this song as a warning lol.
Be like... "Boy, you may not know it now...But a woman can make and break a man. So find you a woman that helps make you wanna be unbreakable for her...don't pick one that tries to break you."
Covered by many , this is the origional . He did this on the first take as a demo ,the rest is history .
Yep I like this best
Just a very thoughtful, perceptive reaction to this classic, Percy Sledge was from Muscle Shoals, Alabama and this was recorded at Fame Studios, famed for the "Muscle Shoals' sound, many of the greats recorded here, such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, etc., the backing band was white and they made so many of the soul music classics of the 60s. Jimmy Johnsons' guitar is so sweet and right in the pocket. This all-time classic will never be topped, please react to "Take Time to Know Her" by Mr. Sledge. Thank you!
Percy’s version isThe BEST! This was my first dance at my wedding years ago.
Greatest song of all time
Recorded at Mussle Shoals Alabama . This was the first ,all others are covers .
One of the best ever ❤
Thx! Yes I have fallen so hard in love that everything he listed I’ve done! Love is more powerful than a hurricane! Oy!
Oh yea, this is classic stuff. This what I heard as a child with my parents.
i like Percy Sledge ,,,, remember song My special prayer
Yeah.I can and still do feel this
More magic from Muscle Shoals AL,🇨🇦💖🇺🇸
When he sang it you can see, tell he met it tumeke Maori from Aotearoa new Zealand
No one EVER will sing this song as good as Percy Sledge.
I have loved someone like that it hurts you actually hurt when you're not together you do anything to make her Happy or just to see her smile but unfortunately, they don't always love you back like that or your Love scares them. I seriously believe everyone deserves to be loved like that it has changed my life because i am actually scared to Love someone anymore because of what a woman can do to your heart. Great song Love your reaction to the songs
This will always be his song. He sang it first and sang it the best. Another one is Home Free with Austin Brown actually singing this song to his girlfriend off stage. He put a lot of emotion in it.
WTF you are reacating to some of the Best Songs Ever Written, and I love that you are doing this keep on keeping on!
You'll never want to hear that Michael Bolton version again now that you've heard how it's supposed to be done.
Percy and this song are like toast and jam. Cant separate one from the other. The only version that matters 👍🏻and probably the best song about passion towards a woman.
Do yourself a big, beautiful favor and watch "Cinema Paradiso". Not only for the outstanding Morricone soundtrack, and the wondrous story...but also, and more importantly, for the love.
Young man in the rain, night after night after night, heart full of love, unrequited. But the story goes on.
When this song was new, we heard it on small radios, far from our madding ears, so while we got hints of Percy's greatness, hearing it now, as a post-modern, with headphones...
Gentleman had SOUL! And LOVE! You will feel this, and people will feel this toward you. Probably already do.
Young lady, the answer is yes. I was next to her until she left me with her last breath. I wish everyone could find such a love before they exit this life.
Another version of this song that I think you'd like, is by Home Free. They're an excellent acuppella group, and they give this song their own twist
Otis Redding - I've Been Loving You Too Long - 1967.06.17 - Monterey, CA, USA- - No one can sing like this man!!!!!!Greatest Soul Singer that ever lived!!!!!!
Married to my wife 42 years and yes, we love each other like that. (Yeah, I am damn lucky.)
Sweet Percy put Muscle Shoals on the map! It all started with Percy. I think his best song was 'Take Time to Know Her.'
I really loved the flip side of this 45 record, too. It's called "Cover Me." Please listen to it, too. Thank you!
Omg one of my favorites,
Loved slow dancing to this
I knew you'd say that, because I felt the same way, just like Carol king natural woman.
Great song .
When he, my black boss man would whistle, he actually sounded like a live bird. If you had your eyes closed you would swear to God that it was a bird. You really, really would. But like I said before, Michael Bolton sang it pretty damn good and Home Free sang it and girl it sounded extra spectacular but it was indeed for a fact that SOUL BROTHER, Mr. Percy Sledge sang it the very best. And just because he was of color don't mean crap. Not all black people can sing and not all black people can dance and for that not all white people can sing or dance worth a crap. Soul has no color. If you got it, you got it if you don't you don't, it's as simple as that. I call it blessed. Back in the days that's how they use to refer to black people. A soul brother and a soul sister. I'm a 73 year old Mexican and I know what I am talking about. Look in your history books if you don't believe me back in the Martin Luther King days. But anyway Sweetheart I do sincerely thank you so very much for playing one of my all time favorite songs. I really, really enjoyed it very, very much. Hopefully you will continue to play a hell of a lot more music from MOTOWN. If you do believe it or not your ratings on your channel might just sky rocket. Well anyway Darling, have a Blessed Day. Adios. Remember check out a group called "Home Free" version of you haven't already. Compare the three of them and let your ears be the judge.
Loving eyes can never see .....gets me everytime
Man those were the days, this song and Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul.
This song so perfectly & beautifully tells you how a man expresses love.
Yes I have but it ended with my broken heart and I still have the feeling
this is the only version to listen too amazing
My favorite is by the Home Free singing "When A Man Loves A Woman".
Fantastic.
For style and tone a great companion piece to this song is Little Esther Phillip's "Rrelease Me." Would love to hear your reaction.
So true.
He was working in a hospital singing it someone heard him and got him started
Home Free (Austin Brown).does the song great justice and their version is probably the best cover. That said, Percy Sledge will always be the go-to version. At least from my generation, the original will always be the memorable one.
I second, third & fourth the nomination for Home Free’s cover of it🎼!!!
@@kthor Austin is one of the best singers ever! For me, Home Free and Voctave are the two best acapella groups ever.
Yeah, this is the best one. Hands down.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
Yes, as far as I'm concerned this is the only version. In answer to your question, yes I did love someone that much.
I vaguely remember the Michael Bolton version. When ever this song title is mentioned, this is the version that pops into my mind.
ANGELA ! YOU NEED TO HEAR " HOME FREE " DO THIS. --------AWESOME RENDITION.
Pure Emotion...
Percy Sledge sings this song
Michael Bolton screams this song
Yes loved a woman like that and still do. We met when I was 15 and we are still together after 37 years
First Love, Always.
The Bolton version should come with a sick bag. 'Nuf said.
This is THE real version--------1966 ----------his one & only Top 40 hit. But what a song ! So true, it hurts. ---------------MJL< 75 y/o
OMG, Angela. You've got to check out the Acapella version by Home Free.
Apparently he made this up and sang it or ad libed it after he got dumped by his girlfriend who he was crazy about. In his head he just winged it on a stage and wrote it down afterwards
Angela, check out Bette Midler's cover of this song from her movie, "The Rose". She put it down on the table!
I loved my daughters mother like that. You should check out "Rose colored glasses' by John Conley.
This is called testifyin;!
Yes, that's the only way I know how to love
I'd love to see DayOne Reacts to the film 'The Crying Game' - this song plays over the opening scene.
