The amazing thing about this song is, Percy sledge actually came home one day and found an empty house, and a note where his wife said she couldn't take him being on the road anymore, and she left him. He had a concert either that night or the next night. Of course he was heartbroken, so during the concert he just couldn't take it anymore, just turned to the band and told them to play something he could sing to, and he came up with this song right on the spot! Pour his whole heart out!!
This song was the greatest one to dance close to your main squeeze back then. This 66 year old remembers well. He was ,as we said back then, cool groovy and fly!
I was fortunate enough to see him perform live 28 years ago. I grew up listening to Percy Sledge, and for as long as I live I will never forget night that I got to see him in real life!
"When A Man Loves A Woman", by Percy Sledge, is one of the best Rock/Soul recordings ever made during the "Rock Era" in the 1960s. I am really surprised that Sledge performed on a TV music program during that time period, and EVEN MORE surprised that the TV station broadcast the program IN COLOR, AND VIDEOTAPED the broadcast for future generations to enjoy. Thanks, "THEJAYYSHOW", for reacting to this very rare, very special performance by Percy Sledge here on RUclips. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
Pretty sure that the guy who introduced him was Otis Redding!! This was a syndicated TVshow called The!!! Beat, hosted by WLAC DJ Hoss Allen. The story is thus - they had just told Hoss that the show was being cancelled, Hoss got drunk, and they pulled him off and turned the show over to Otis, who was also a guest that night. With no warning and no preparation, he did a fantastic job!
Aw man brought back memories of my parents dancing in our living room to this song! This was their song for sure! Unfortunately my dad passed at 58 almost 14 years ago but my brother will dance to this song with my mom every so often❤
my Uncle and Aunt had a bar way way back with a jukebox-years later I got the box full of 45s that were in it and this was one of them-such a great singer and song!
Percy was so under rated.. I grew up listening to Percy..he puts so much in all his songs.. Just like Otis. My favorite song of Percy " Out of Left Field."
In my opinion and I've been around a long long time Percy should be known as the father of R and B. There's hardly any reaction videos of him and that's a shame. The ones I did find were all one song this one. That man recorded some of the greatest r&b soulful songs ever. Try Take time to know her , Dark end of the street , Warm and tender love , Cover me....I could go on and on. I can't think of a greater talent that's so unappreciated.😢
I got to see Percy do this live at Peabody's Warehouse in Virginia Beach. Although "Warehouse" is in the name, it was a small upstairs club. The bandstand was just a small step up from the dance floor. When Percy came out, people sat on the dance floor and the rest stood for his performance. I wondered if this great song would sound anything like the record. Not to worry. Percy nailed it. "Out Of Left Field" as well. The brass was awesome and Percy's voice was incredible. His jumpsuit was soaked by the time he was through. An unforgettable night.
Word was back in the day that the first time he performed this song it was not written. Percy Sledge had just had his woman break up with him, or maybe he had found she was running around on him, something, and he walked up to the stage and started singing from the heart.
I have this song on a 45 record along with many others and album’s. I was born in 1952, and taking them all with me when I die ! Held on to them this long, I matters we’ll take them with me right ?
This is the original, it's so good. You have to hear Michael Bolton sing it as well. You will be torn, believe me,you will be going,I love that one,but I love the other one.
Percy Sledge was incredible, and yes this was the original version. Michael Bolton did it very well (he also did Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay really well), but nobody sang it like Percy Sledge. I love watching your reaction to classic music that shaped me and millions of others. It's good that the youth of today takes the time to hear it. And hey, have you heard Otis Redding sing Dock of the Bay? Another huge classic you don't want to miss.
Omugosh finally yazz I love percy sledge I introduced percy sledge to moma, I hope he's singing to them all in paradise .peace love, respect stay safe, stay healthy, stay alive..yes listen to more percy..
He has so many great songs a couple of my favorites are, Out of Left field and It Tears me up. You really can't go wrong with anything by him. Yes he was the original in fact I'm pretty sure it was the first song he ever recorded
Percy Sledge was one of my favorite performers,he had so many recordings of great love songs for that era.You really should check them out! Love ya, You're absolutely beautiful!
Ahhhhh.... Old School. The limited technology kept everything down to Earth real, nobody fakin' it in the least. Give a listen to The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go? Otis Redding - Sitting On The Dock of the Bay
" PERCY SLEDGE. " A BLUES /SOULMAN HE ALSO HAD A SONG CALLED:. " TAKE TIME TO KNOW HER " NOW YOU MIGHT WANT TO HEAR:. ANOTHER GREAT BLUES/SOULMAN" CLARENCE CARTER " " SLIP AWAY " NOW THIS ONE BAD MOTHER... HIS VOCALS PLAY IT NOW: YOU'LL THANK ME LATER. T.Y. - " R.RAMOS. "
This song has so many memories for me staying with my sister in the summer!! Percy was the man we listened to wishing we had men!! Hahahahs new sub here! I love this❤️tennessee
Such a great song; I can't believe you're not familiar with it. Another song with a similar theme but a very different sound is Dr. Hook's "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman."
Nice reaction. If you like old-school soul, you should consider listening to Lou Rawls (Love is a Hurting Thing), Etta James (At Last), Otis Redding (Try a Little Tenderness), or Billy Stewart (Sitting in the Park).
Many dont know Percy Sledge was tone deaf. A man i know toured with him for a while. He said he never sang this song in the same key twice in a row, he would argue with them over it. Doesnt take away from his talent though.
I wish you would react to more percy songs. I can think of 3 of his songs way better than this . This was popular because its been in so many movies. Its topped charts nearly every time its been covered for a movie .
Beautiful song. Great reaction. Jay, I love your energy... Try Michael Bolton's live version of this song as well...You can thank me later :) Cheers!!!
Can you please , whenever you can react to a song by Kenny Rogers entitled Through The Years . Wanted to dedicate this song to my wife who's gone through a lot during our 52 years together.Than you.❤️❤️⛪👰🤵
On my wife’s phone check out your roots sweetheart here are a few for you cab calaway he can’t dance cause his shoes is to big / al green a change is a comin / he ain’t heavy he’s my brother mat king cole / fifth dimension / the ink spots / bb king / fats domino all l did was protect her from the foggy Mountain Dew / chubby checker and the real king elvis and Charlie pride you got to kiss an angel in the morning and love her like the devil in the night and old oak Colaijah and / Otis reading sitting on a dock of a bay these were people who sang for the love of signing they would do it for free just to do it and pasty cline and while l am on my soapbox freight youkam and Faron young and junior brown
I don't mean to be a nit-picky asshole, but he DOES miss a few notes here. Overall a great performance because Percy had a great voice, but he certainly winds up on the "low end" of a few of the notes he tries hitting here.
This song made me LITERALLY scream and cry it sounded so sad when I was about 4 years old. I was listening to my mom's 60s/early 70s 45s.
That’s called soul
This is a song to slow dance with someone you love. Make you fall in love all over again.
You made my year when you smiled and vibed to this. ❤. Thank you for making me feel better about life, gorgeous lady 👸🏻
And I've loved this song for decades, but I think women are the true audience.
So glad you are reacting to this. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can sing this song like Percy Sledge.
I'm glad she is too. Let's encourage her to play the 3 I've suggested..? Percy is the man..!
The amazing thing about this song is, Percy sledge actually came home one day and found an empty house, and a note where his wife said she couldn't take him being on the road anymore, and she left him. Pour his whole heart out!!
My husband and I used to dance in the kitchen to this song... I miss those dances so much.. I wish I had one more dance with him...
My niece when she was little used to sing “when a man loves a walnut” it was super cute.
Great to see a woman who can be a great person in a way
Back when singers could afford a good horn section!
Deep deep Soul!!

This is a wonderful song from when I was so much younger. Thanks.
Love to listen to Percy Sledge. I love old music. Great selection!
Word was back in the day that the first time he performed this song it was not written. Percy Sledge had just had his woman break up with him, or maybe he had found she was running around on him, something, and he walked up to the stage and started singing from the heart.
Texadan Scooter this was written by Calvin Lewis. Great song, and no one sings it like Percy❤️
Man Ain't Lying!! Love this Song!🎶

This was THE slowdance song back in the day, along with Color My World by Chicago.
I have this song on a 45 record along with many others and album’s. I was born in 1952, and taking them all with me when I die ! Held on to them this long, I matters we’ll take them with me right ?
Me too. Being old is a small price to pay for being young and alive during the greatest time in popular music ever.
This is the original, it's so good. You have to hear Michael Bolton sing it as well. You will be torn, believe me,you will be going,I love that one,but I love the other one.

Many dont know Percy Sledge was tone deaf. A man i know toured with him for a while. He said he never sang this song in the same key twice in a row, he would argue with them over it. Doesnt take away from his talent though.
Love Percy Sledge but the studio version is much better.

Exactly right !
Cab Calloway was simply amazing.
Please react to The Originals "Baby I'm for Real". You won't be disappointed.
I don't mean to be a nit-picky asshole, but he DOES miss a few notes here. Overall a great performance because Percy had a great voice, but he certainly winds up on the "low end" of a few of the notes he tries hitting here.
I would have done the same thing but she didn't love me back.
Thomas San Francisco then you my dear deserve more
Listen to Michael Bolton sing this song
Sadly the live version isn’t always the best. While this is ok, the studio production is 10 times better
