I'm a watercolour artist, just a few tips for anybody reading this:
1: Use watercolour pencils to get a base, one colour at a time.
2: Add water carefully, just dip the small brush in and as long as it is not dripping you'll be fine.
3: Once the bottom layer is dry, use the pencils without water to get detail.
Hope this helps
Finally, a good fucking Comment. Thank you, kind Sir/Madam.
Thanks this is really helpful I just got some watercolor pencils and the only things I've done is draw in grayscale then add pops of color with the pencils
Thanks you
Thanks for that I did my first watercolor piece and it fucked over cause I knew nothing 😂 but I really enjoyed it thanks once again for the tips
@@wigglytuffgaming Oh my god. This is how I feel about RUclips.... basically all the time. Your frustration is very refreshingly relateable right now. Also, I agree, the OP is helpful.
I use watercolour pencils, I use one of those brushes where you squeeze it to get the water out because I felt like regular brushes dried out too quickly...

@@JamesCPotter13 yeah when he said that I honestly thought back to all the times he went to traditional teaching like skillshare and thrived from it. I dont think that it's that he's a kinesthetic learner. I think that he doesnt have the patience to sit down to pay attention by himself. Like how someone with adhd may not be able to do independent study, but they can learn with a teacher perfectly fine.
Minty noice! 😌
i do watercolours. some tips:
1. Sharpen with a Knife
Since watercolour pencils are held together with dissolving binders, they are generally softer than coloured pencils. Using a standard sharpener can damage the colour strips, so give your set the care they need by carefully sharpening them with a hobby knife instead.
2. Store and Carry in a Box
When you transport or store your watercolour pencils, keep them bound together with a rubber band and put them in a box. A fabric pencil case won’t offer the protection they need and can cause the colour strips to fracture if they are rattling around.
3. Experiment with Different Painting Techniques
One of my favourite things about watercolour pencils is how versatile they are. There is an array of different effects and techniques you can achieve by taking the time to experiment and try out different approaches. If you’re not sure where to start, I've listed three easy methods you can try out.
a. Draw Onto Dry Paper and Add Water
Draw directly onto a sheet of watercolour paper, as you would with regular coloured pencils, and use a watercolour paintbrush to apply water. This activates the pigment and turns your pencil marks into watercolour paint. You can then spread, blend and create different effects with your colours.
b. Create Swatches on a Separate Piece of Paper
Another easy watercolour pencil painting method is to create swatches on a separate piece of paper. You’ll then use this as your palette. To start, colour in a small area on your paper palette and add water to create your paint. This method is great for creating soft washes and filling in larger areas on your artworks. You can also mix colours by drawing two colours side by side and combining them with water.
c. Apply to Damp Paper
The third method for painting with watercolour pencils is to draw on a dampened sheet of watercolour paper. To control your water application, use a sponge or spray bottle to dampen your paper and be careful not to overdo it. This approach creates intense and vibrant line work in a similar way to oil pastels.
4. Spray Water Onto Your Drawing
To create a soft effect, use a spray bottle to gently apply water to your drawing. This is a quick and easy way to create beautiful, soft edges on your line work.
5. Paint in the Outdoors
Watercolour pencils are easy to carry and don’t require many additional art tools and materials. Make the most of the compact nature of this medium and head into the outdoors for a creative session. All you need to take is your watercolour pencil set, paper, a brush, and some water.
6. Use a Water Brush
Water brushes are perfect for use with watercolour pencils. They come in different sizes and feature a hollow barrel that can be filled with water or mixed paint. By squeezing the flexible barrel as you work, water flows out onto the brush bristles and can be applied to your artwork. It can take some practice to control the flow, but, once you get a feel for it, a water brush is an excellent tool to use with your watercolour pencils.
7. Choose the Right Paper
To achieve the best results, you will need to choose the right paper to use with your watercolour pencils. We would recommend watercolour stock with at least 185gsm in weight. This will withstand the various techniques you will be using and prevents warping from water application.
8. Start Light and Finish Dark
watercolour pencil techniques 3
The best process for creating a watercolour artwork is to lay the lightest tones down first and add the darker tones last. This is because watercolour is a translucent medium, so a light colour will not cover a darker tone.
9. Add Detail to Mixed Media Artworks
Watercolour pencils can be used to add fine details and patterning over standard watercolour artworks and gouache. Don’t be afraid to experiment and explore what this fantastic medium is capable of.
10. Create Texture
There are a range of ways to add texture and effects to watercolour artworks. A fun way to figure these out is to play around with different ideas and see what happens. To start you off, we’ll share a couple of our favourite ideas. The first one is to use sandpaper on wood, then let the particles fall onto your damp watercolour artwork to create natural spots on petals, trees and other suitable subjects. You can also use a toothbrush or paint brush to create droplets or flick paint onto your artwork.
Hope this helps because Ispent a decade writing this.
These tips are great! Thanks for your sharing😇

Jazza's frustration about color sliding around unevenly is the struggle of every watercolor artist ever
🤣 This is why I avoided watercolours for so long. Once I learned to embrace the chaos, they quickly became my favourite medium.
Only those who don't use proper watercolor paper (for wet on wet technique, wich is friggin expensive, I admit) and/ or don't secure/stretch the paper enough. Of course, when you try to literally drown the paper, it's not helpful either.
To get a more even color for the pencils I've found it's better to do even strokes, almost treating it like alcohol markers
Jazza should do a one week series where he goes back to try some of the skills he's learned on skill share (ei. Caligrafy, small sculpting, abstract) to see how much he's retained from it!

Panther Girl XD I did the same. My grandfather had bought this ultra fancy set while in Japan. He had gotten me a real calligraphy set, water color pencil set, and this super nice leather bound sketch book with sheets of large paper that was apparently special for water color and water color pencils. I filled up the little ceramic cup that came with the set with water, sat down to the table, and proceeded to stick the pencil in the ceramic cup. After getting a bit frustrated I looked over and went "I wonder what the brushes are for. Why do I need brushes if these are water colo-oh. Oh. I'm an idiot". So you're 100% not the only one.

If your watercolor paper is thick enough or/and you don't apply a lot of water in one go, you don't have to do that.
For stuff that goes specifically in sketchbook or are study-only pieces, I usually don't tape.
lmao!!! good one. He did admit that "I don't know what I'm doing". so he gets a pass. For this video only though, lol.
You don't tape your paper either. You saturate both sides with water and slap it to a surface.
@@LantanaLiz you do tape your paper, that's why there's specific tape exacly for that purpose. And you don't saturate both sides, you steep your paper in a basin or bath of water for a good length of time, take it out soaking and put it on your work surface, then apply your watercolour tape all around the edges and leave it over night to dry. It stretches the paper & prevents warping. If you just slap it to a surface without taping it, while it's drying it will just shrink back to it's original state & will still warp once you wet it again when painting, especially if you're doing a 'wet on wet' watercolour painting.... Which would defy the whole point of soaking it in the first place.

Basically, you put pigment in one place when you want it to be the darkest, then you move it around with water. You can also apply pigment evenly on the whole surface and then make it all smooth using water. Wait for it to dry and apply another coat, no matter if its the same or a different color
i use water colors for drawing sea, lakes, pool etc. it looks very nice u should try it
Edit:thx for the likes and comments!
First time i used them i recreated stary night in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade art class xD
@@xosharpieloverxo ...just say middle school art class
@@hny_hannie yea, but hat would have been the smart thing
I get it
Water
@Paige C yup
They are really good for adding small details to watercolor pieces. I will create entire artworks mainly in my base pallet watercolors and then use watercolor pencils to get finer deeper lines before adding water, and sometimes it's not even necessary to add the water it's all about preference.
Art teacher :How are you so good
Jazza: let me tell you about skill share
(Edit thanks for the likes☺️
lie so true🤣
Jazza: Takes one class - immediately becomes an expert
Me: Goes through high school and college using this medium - still looks like a 4 year olds drawing...
Me as a teacher: YES JAZZA YOU’RE A KINESTHETIC LEARNER!
I’m so glad that Jazza is a kinesthetic learner because makes for some damn entertaining content. Never change.
As you were putting water onto the blue ball I thought to myself
“It’s a shame this ain’t a skillshare video”
...
Funny that
I prefer using watercolour pencils without water, because I find it easier to blend
True
I feel like watercolor pencils and normal colored pencils go down the same
@@fkhan2006 Your opinion and I have mine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@cmchl ya :)
I feel like watercolor pencils are smoother and more pigmented than regular ones. Either that or I've been using shitty quality regular colored pencils.
please do a video with one of those old black plastic artist kits!
“Almost like a bl-bl-blotchy aerosol effect” totally didn’t think you were about to say “blood splatter” and that definitely wasn’t made worse by the fact that it was red splatters.
Same lmao the first thing I thought vof was blood (especially because in one of his vids he animated a character slamming their head on a table and blood comes out of their mouth)
Who else knew the video was sponsored by SkillShare as soon as you saw he didn't know what he was doing
Jazza do the 600page sketchbook challenge. Plz!!!
Jazza: no instructions!
Skillshare: *exists*
Jazza: one instruction!
Jazza, my son (6) & I just found you and are excited to be new viewers. This was our first video & we are cracking up over your kinesthetic learner stuff! can't wait to watch you more! 😍
I wet my brush and put it on the pencil then paint with it✍🏻 it gives you more control within the drawing
Ever seen Ace Of Cakes? Why not try to make an Epic Cake Sculpture? Both artistic and delicious!
^^^ this
yes please
Jazza: draws a tiny thing and smears it around a bit
Jazza: throws it in the trash
Me: WHYYYYYYYY JAZZA IT HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL
For the sphere you drew, I'd recommend starting shading from the outside when you go over with water. It's easier to push the color forward than it is to pull it back.
Someone needs to by Jazza one of Nathan W. Pyle's "Chaos is how I learn" shirts
Bonnie Gable or at least introduce the two artists 😂
I love Nathan Pyle!
Yeeeeessssss
I love using these! I mix them with real water colours and use them for more the detailed parts of the painting. Then I layer them, alternating between water and pencils which creates a beautifully saturated effect!
Jazza you should try dipping the pencils themselves into water, I thought it made an interesting effect.
Agreed
I'm loving the Mont Marte brushes through this project. Glad to know I'm not the only experienced painter using synthetic brushes from the cheap shop.
