These are the types of people that watch movies for the "ooh ahh" moments and if a movie has 60+ minutes of "ooh ahh" in it then in their minds it's a cinematic masterpiece. It's because of people like this that Scorsese gets shit on when he points out the blatantly obvious fact that cinema is dying and that people just want to watch the amusement park ride equivalent of a movie these days.
It's bad enough that you think Dune is even remotely comparable to Tenet or Justice League. But you also agree with Scorsese's boomer ass take. Gtfo of here

I like "ooh ahh" and I'm not afraid to say it. Why the fuck would I watch a movie for any other reason? The only criteria by which to judge a movie is whether or not it's entertaining, and if the "ooh ahh" in a movie is good then it's a good movie. I pray thanks every day that film snobs are a dying breed, and that mass produced junk is rapidly coming to dominate the industry just as god intended. Dune was a good movie, whether or not it fits into that category. Tenant was also good. I haven't watched Justice League but it's probably good. On another note, I will not pretend that I am an intellectual for liking these movies. However I will assert that anyone who dislikes them is a 4 year old, as that is objectively and quantifiably true.
Nope dune was so ass. Maybe if you read the book and watch the old movie you get it. But I had no clue why anyone would think that was a good intro movie to a series.
He is correct, every time someone points out something "good" about Dune, its either people that read the books soying out because they have visuals, or people pointing out the visuals, the story was non existent, the characters were ALL not fleshed out, I didnt give a shit about any of the characters cause they didnt bother fleshing any of them out, nothing that is supposed to be important is talked about long enough to care about or understand, if you read the books its probably amazing, if you are watching it with no prior knowledge and fresh, its an awful movie, it looks great but just because I dipped horse shit into gold doesnt mean that at its core its not still horse shit
Dune sucks because its half of a movie in double the time. Everyone saying that its such a good adaptation of the book is lying; its a adaptation that only holds up IF you've read the book and only half the book, which is an abysmal scale, especially since the film ENDS RIGHT AFTER THE FIRST THING HAPPENS. It looks good, but christ, I wanted a movie where things happen. I missed anything fucking happening . Look, if you're a book buff I have no doubt that the book is good. but christ it literally ends right when things start.
@@REDDAWNproject Fair enough. I think it would have been a bad movie if they attempted any more time compression which is always the reason book to film adaptations never work as well. I’ve not read the book. So I was completely unaware of the source material however I felt like I left with everything I needed to set up for what I believe is a trilogy on the way but I still thoroughly enjoyed the world and characters and film overall.
@@REDDAWNprojectnot when the movie is part 1 of a story, you should a grade a film on it's own by not looking at the source material not when it's part 1 of an ongoing story that's like reviewing a TV show and only judging as a whole based season 1.
Top Gun Maverick is a great film... but only because of its predecessor. By itself it is a good movie but not great. According to Destiny, Dune is a bad movie because of how uninvested he was in the characters and because of its masturbatory use of "imax shots." And yet Top Gun Maverick doesn't tell you anything about Maverick except he is an expert pilot with allusions to the first film, and also has an incredible amount of "imax shots." The only thing he said that was correct about dune is that is should have ended when the mom and son flew off into the desert. But destiny seems to think that movies should tell not show. Anyone who even remotely watches films or works around the film industry knows that 99% of the time it is infinitely better to show and not tell. He only likes Top Gun more than Dune because he has assumedly seen the first film and knew the backstory of Maverick. Now when Dune comes around and shows the audience tense situations like the Bene Gesserit or the interplanetary political conflict between the houses it assumes the audience is smart enough to pick up on that. Now Destiny is a smart guy but somehow he seems to be too dumb to pick up on the gravity on some of these situations. Dan made the point that Paul is a prince who is next in line to be king but is personally conflicted on his role as a royal heir. This is a good characteristic, yet destiny laughs it off like it's some kindergarten storytelling (meanwhile Maverick's character is that he flies planes really good and is cocky). Dune is the first film of what I believe is going to be a trilogy (or at least have a following film). While I can understand the movie feeling a bit slow, it is trying to set things up for following films. It's like if Destiny watched the Fellowship of the Ring or A New Hope and said "This movie is garbage because nothing happens, there are no consequences!" I would generally agree that these two movies wouldn't be as good if they were standalone films... but they are not, and neither is Dune. The fellowships of the ring can be very tedious and boring throughout and yet it is hailed as one of the best trilogies of all time... why? Because the complete story of all three films sets up and fulfills payoffs beautifully. But if you were to critique Fellowship as a standalone you would be asking yourself, "Why did they need to deliver a ring when they didn't even make it to Mount Doom? It's like everything they did was for nothing!" And then Destiny is coming in and essentially saying that Return of the King is sooooo good because of its storytelling and world building but like 90% of that movie wouldn't make any sense without the two previous movies!!!!!!!!!! Like Dune, the Fellowship of the Ring only becomes part of the best trilogies in history because it is part of the trilogy not because of its individuality as a standalone film. Dune is only part 1 of a bigger story that left many questions unanswered, exactly like Fellowship. Just wait, once the whole Dennis Villeneuve Dune story is completed people will not think this movie is anywhere near as bad as they claim it is. We are watching an Empire Strikes Back moment happen in real time where people at the time hate it yet once the whole story is complete it comes one of the best films ever made. Anyways maybe i'm wrong or hardcore schizoposting but it seems like Destiny doesn't want to do the bare minimum of watch and listen to a movie that doesn't outright tell him everything he needs to know to care about a character.
Steve's ice cream cone take is the legit correct one. The 'cake' cones only enhance the flavor of the ice cream, not obscuring it. Chocolate covered sugar cones are tasty but they are like a separate thing whereas the cake cone feels like an enhancement of the ice cream.
Dune sucked because nothing was explained enough. For example the mentats. My gf who doesn’t watch or like scifi at all said “what is this guy like a human computer” but that’s not enough. They should have had his eyes roll back in his head while he mumbles “calculating… calculating…DING!” Then a cartoon thought bubble appears overhead and it’s all 1’s and 0’s. Then the movie should pause while a narrator reads a paragraph of exposition from the novel about what mentats are and how they’re trained. This would have been an acceptable amount of explanation, because if a film is not perfectly logical, explained thoroughly, and realistic in every sense… what purpose could it possible serve?
