    The analog vs digital thing is like vegetables. There are no such things as vegetables in botany or biology, they only exist in nutrition. There are berries, legumes, tubers, roots stems, etc., but only in nutrition are they called vegetables. When talking about signals, analog is often used for technically digital signals that seemingly have the capability to send the full range that can be received instead of stepped or strictly 1/0 on/off. So while a lot of modern "analog" signals are technically digital, they are effectively analog for all intents and purposes.
    Sidenote: this video kind of perfectly encapsulates Destiny's thought process. Starts off assuming he knows things and aggressively threatens to ban. Almost instantly realizes he doesn't have any grasp of the actual topic at hand. Quickly absorbs information encountering multiple plateaus alternating between understanding new information and realizing he doesn't have a firm grasp yet. Then chooses an arbitrary stopping point where he probably has a better understanding than most, but still has some blind spots that he will aggressively ban people if they comment something close as a defense mechanism.

      @@MasterHieiye it's just being called analogue since we had analogue sticks. It just refers to the fact that that it's an input that isn't a simple on off single like a d pad it now has a value just like destiny was talking about. I don't really know why they decided to call it analogue but it has been called it for what 25/30 years and I'm sure destiny must know it's called an analogue stick or analogue triggers or analogue buttons in the case of the PS2 and PS3 controller. Perhaps pressure sensitive would be a more accurate term but it doesn't sound as cool

    Classic. Some guy in chat correctly saying this is software (but embedded in the hardware, e.g. as firmware) gets completely shit on and called a "r*tard". The Destiny goes on to make a completely incorrect description of how he believes this keyboard works. If he'd just spend two minutes watching the video instead of this dumb speculation about how it *might* work, it becomes OBVIOUS how this is easy to do in firmware, and also in software on the computer.

      Nice. I’m downloading the software into the switches on my keyboard right now.

    • @EirikRye
      @EirikRye 2 месяца назад +16

      @@SDREHXC I know you're just being flippant, but the switches are completely irrelevant. You just need a controller (i.e. software) at the USB output that only sends the latest pressed key if multiple keys are pressed.
      In fact, you can implement this for *any* USB keyboard by adding a small dongle with a microcontroller between the keyboard and your computer, and program it yourself. There's a reason other keyboard manufacturers (Wooting) has retroactively added this feature to a huge part of the lineup, even keyboards that are seven years old.

    As someone who works in industrial controls, Let me try clearing things up;
    Analog inputs are indeed a thing, typically a voltage range (ex. 0-10v) or current (4-20ma).
    Traditional keyboards would be considered discrete inputs, meaning the keys depress a mechanism that changes state from open to closed with no granularity.
    This keyboard seems to use an analog input, meaning there is probably a variable resistor that changes resistance as the key travels, making for infinite granularity between resting and full press.
    HOWEVER there is certainly a signal processor built into the keyboard that converts these analog signals into digital integers that are an approximation of the true analog signal, because modern computers are almost entirely digital, meaning they deal with discrete 1s and 0s, not analog voltage ranges.
    For bonus points, analog computers, meaning computers that perform calculations with waveforms rather than discrete logic, used to be a thing before the digital age and were used for things from bomb sights on planes, to tidal predictors for boats. They may be having a comeback too, which I for one am super stoked to see.

      Yes!!! finally someone that understands it!!
      I come from the mechanical keyboard hobby and can say you're definitely spot on how the sensing concept is, the difference on the wooting vs the razer physically is just how the switches itself are designed to implement it.
      Wooting uses Hall-effect switches, which uses magnets on the sliders and measures the electromagnetic force to get the data for proximity, position and speed of presses. The Razer keyboard uses Optical sensors that shoot light towards their slider to collect their data. Both form of switches technically have existed and in use for a long time, usually in applications where uptime & reliability matters a lot more (ex: in old nuclear plant terminals, etc), but they used to be very expensive and bulky, and the keyboards that have them usually lack the compatibility of newer keyboard form-factors and accessories.
      For bonus context: It has probably only been like 7~8 years ago that manufacturers have finally found an incentive to manufacture smaller versions of those switches and sensors that fit on the footprint of a modern keyboard. And they also modernized it with sliders that are compatible with the Cherry MX cross style stem keycaps (the most commonly used mechanical keyboard switch type currently). At that time, vintage keyboard enthusiasts (like Chryosran22 on youtube) and forums like Deskthority/Geekhack started to gain views following the growing trend of the mechanical keyboard hobby, which were starting to be filled with people unsatisfied with the stagnation and limitation of the discrete Cherry MX design (and subsequent clones of it)
      Sadly i think there's not really a lot of innovations going around again pushing the boundaries for switch design, most of the keyboard hobbyist now focus on more subjective preferences like the sound profiles of switches etc, so it has looped back to being slow again lol

    On the topic of analog and digital there’s really 4 words that one ought to understand.
    Something is **discrete** if it can exist in only one of a countable (but potentially infinite) number of states. For example, the number of items in your shopping cart is discrete since it is countable (even if there is no theoretical limit on how large that number can be).
    Something is **continuous** if it can exist in any of an uncountably infinite number of states. The amount of water in a bottle is continuous. You can’t really count water. If your bottle is 8 ounces then you can have 0 ounces of water or you can have 8 ounces of water, but you can also have any of an infinite number of volumes in between. What makes it uncountable is that if you pick any two non-equal possible values then there will always be infinitely many possible values between them.
    Those two terms are more mathematical and logical in nature, and they’re kind of pivotal to understanding the distinction between analog vs digital as concepts.
    “Digital” is synonymous with discrete, but not at all equivalent. Data that is “digital” is made up of “digits.” The same kind of “digits” we use in writing numbers. A digit is a symbol belonging to a finite collection of possible values. Binary signals are digital signals where each item is either a 0 or a 1, but you could have a digital signal that was ternary (0,1, or 2) and it truly is better to think of these digits as symbols rather than numbers. We don’t have to have 0 or 1, we can just as easily call these “off” vs “on” or “red” vs “blue” vs “green” in some other ternary case revolving around colors. What really distinguishes “digital” from “discrete” is that “digital” really pertains to signal processing more than math/logic and where the “discrete” number of items in your shopping cart is unbound, a “digital” system is less theoretical and has a finite number of symbols that can each be in a finite number of states so there is a finite (but exponentially large) number of states the “digital” system can be in (which is why numbers can overflow into negatives when they get too big in games like Skyrim or whatever).
    “Analog” much like “digital” is a term that also refers to practical signal processing more than abstract logic and mathematics. Something that is analog is something that is storing a continuous piece of information. To represent pi to the 100th base-10 digit by definition requires 100 base-10 digits worth of information, however it may only require one singular piece of precise analog data. However the problem is with that word precise. A digital system’s strength is that because there are no in-between states there is little room for error. With analog there is always some amount of error in your data even if it is a teeny tiny amount. It’s possible that in an analog system you meant to store 10.38957249876… but you accidentally stored 10.38957249912…
    So real quick:
    Discrete: abstract, mathematical, countable but potentially finite or infinite. Example: Number of items in shopping cart or state of light switch.
    Continuous: abstract, mathematical, not countable but potentially finite or infinite.
    Example: volume of water in bottle or ocean.
    Digital: practical, signal processing, discrete but practical certainty of being finite. Example: light switch on or off, letters of alphabet.
    Analog: practical, signal processing, continuous but practical certainty of being finite. Example: water in bottle, hot and cold water knobs.
    Regarding analog sticks, they are potentially a bit of a misnomer. The sticks themselves are analog as their position occupies an infinite range of values within a finite range of movement, but that analog piece of information gets converted to digital so software can actually do something with it.

    The reason for Arya meeting up with her Dire Wolf was purely symbolic. Her wolf was to watch the other one be slain and then escape into the wilderness. All the Dire wolves in season one are linked to their owners plight, as well as (loosely) their life line. This is why when Arya comes back to the north she meets her wolf, who is now much larger, full grown, and accompanied by it's family. This symbolizes Arya's return, growth, and (reunited) family ties. And, like Arya, it returns to the wild. Which we see Arya do at the end on the series.

  • @Pandsu

    Bro is old enough to vividly remember the hype around analog sticks and, later, analog triggers on controllers during the N64/PS1 era and up, yet he's confused about the term here. Sure it's digital once it's in the computer but the same goes for any other analog input you can feed into a computer. Use an analog audio signal and it gets converted into a digital signal of a given resolution if you wanna use it on anything except tape or vinyl.
    The same happens with analog signals on gaming peripherals. There's a, to use his word, continuous range of motion with infinite positions you physically push a stick, pull a trigger, or press a button with an analog switch in it (or move a mouse, come to think of it) and that gets converted to a digital signal of a given range instead of being either on or off like with regular switches on keyboards, buttons or d-pads.
    The binary on/off state does not (really) have to be converted from a continuous analog motion. So it's called digital input.
    The position of an analog input on a controller or keyboard does have to be converted from an analog signal. That's why it's called analog input. It makes perfect sense.
    Bonus fun fact: On Playstation 2 and 3 all buttons, except for start and select and L3/R3 I suppose, and the D-Pad were technically analog because they were pressure-sensitive. And I wish that was still a thing because it was criminally underutilized but in games that used it well, like Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, there are sorely missed when they aren't there (like, you can't aim your gun and then not shoot without some shenanigans. And there was something about choking enemies and how you pick them up and shake them where pressure sensitivity made a difference).
    But it's incredibly easy to completely miss that feature because so few games used it.

      Oh you have no idea.
      Their first pilot was so awful that people didn't know that Jaime and Cersei were brother and sister. Feedback was that many things
      The scripts of game of thrones are full of elaborate stage directions, and the writers seem unaware that the viewers cannot see that.
      They made such changes to Jeyne Westerling that Martin told them to rename the character to Talisa, because they wanted to pander Richard Madden ( Robb Stark) for an Emmy.
      The good girl, bad p**sy line.
      Changing Ellaria Sand from someone trying to get the Sand Snakes to calm down to an angry avenger who killed the entire line of House Martell in order to "avenge Oberyn,"
      Killing Barristan Selmy who is still alive in the books and saying that having the actor explain that his character is still alive and trying to be Lord Commander of Daenerys' Queensguard made them want to kill him off more.
      Season 8.

    The removing of overlapping presses can definitely be done through software. It sounds wayyy less complicated than what Destiny was saying. They could just have some sort of transistor setup to only allow one key input at a time. The tricky part I'd imagine would be differentiating the new input from the old through.

    • @kevinmalk
      @kevinmalk 2 месяца назад

      Yes you can def achieve the same result through software. One of the things that makes this such a big thing in CS is that you can already achieve this same functionality though binding your movement to different aliases in your config, however using these types of configs is banned at the professional level. You could also use software like AHK to make nullbinds, although this would more likely have more delay.

    Don't know about other games, but at least concerning cs this is just fearmongering by people who just don't know enough about the game. Yes, sure it eliminates overlap, but that's not even close to the only relevant source of error when counter strafing. Analog keyboards like wooting got you 98% there already anyway, but no one cared.
    So yes, if you isolate a single variable in your testing then it might look bad, but only if you're clueless.
    Also, this is not new. We had in game binds to achieve the same for literally ever.

    This controversy is triggering the fuck out of me. The bind has been a thing for ages and other keyboards do the same thing. Also, nulls are not as OP in competitive as the video creator claims since pushing multiple buttons at the same time is useful a lot of the time.
    I've played KZ (the movement game mode where the nulls bind originated) for thousands of hours and its been a known thing for years. There were even plugins written to detect nulls, but you couldn't ban them outright in CS:GO because nulls were just a bind. The plugin worked based on probability and the occurrence of overlapping button pushes and it flagged plenty of known players who had built in hardware nulls without knowing it (mostly cheap membrane keyboards).

      @@UkiyoIkou yeah, for valve games it doesn't matter much since null-bind scripts have been a thing for like 10 years. Hopefully hardware like this will just force gaming companies to allow more customized configs and binds since pretty much the only ones who still let you are Valve games. The negative consequence of meta configs far outweigh the negative consequences of hardware locking your competitive scene, but I doubt anything will change lol
