Thanks for taking the time to document your issues with the Fowler 2-6-4T. I too recently purchased a mint (supposedly unused) example on eBay for £32, which is stunning but sounds every bit as rough as yours did in the first video. I've ordered myself several X62 rear bearing plates, in the hope that they will fix the issue for me also. Incidentally I also own a Mainline J72 as featured in your other video and a Flying Scotsman and 0-6-0 Diesel Shunter which I received from my parents for Christmas in 1980, which are in need of the same treatment. Fingers crossed.
New rear bearing made a huge difference in this case but there's no certainty that's the issue. The front bearing can cause problems if it's worn or loose. Then there's the thrust bearing and the mesh between the worm and the drive gear. With the X03 motor it's possible to shift the worm back and forth a little with a screwdriver till you find the sweet spot. Just be careful not to damage it or the front bearing or bend the front plate. If nothing works it's probably the front bearing which, as far as I've seen, there are no replacements for. Best bet then is to get a couple of old motors and hope to cobble together one that works quietly!
