Hi Josh. The format is fine. Book exposure to readers is maximized, two books, a different book if a reader doesn't read one of the authors' work, boosts page views.
Thanks, Curt! That's a great point about exposing people to the different books; many people might not click a review for one of the books if the other isn't in the video.
I think it's very healthy to have high expectations. It means you're alive and looking forward to certain events. I, personally, am never disappointed when something doesn't meet my high expectations. I'm just happy that people are making the books, films and video games that I love.
Great video, I really like this format. I like that there was enough time to get deeper into the contents of the books, but it wasn't too long. I find that spoiler-free reviews can easily drag on a little too long, but it certainly wasn't a problem here.
The dual book review format is an excellent idea! As a professional translator myself, I'm looking forward to reading Babel. The whole concept of this book is very interesting and I can't wait to see how Kuang handled this topic. After reading some very negative reviews on Goodreads, your review made me excited again to read Babel!
Thank you! I would REALLY LOVE your thoughts on Babel with your background. I've always been fascinated by translation; one literary goal of mine is to read Crime and Punishment ever 3-5 year with a different translator every time.
@@RedFuryBooks I've read Babel and loved it and then read some low rated reviews on GoodReads, the majoiy of them were literally the definition of white fragility. You should give it a try, it's really interesting!
@@RedFuryBooks I'm planning on reading it next week and I will for sure let you know what I think! And I like that literary goal of yours. I'm sure you'll find that all the english translations bring very different reading experiences. I also reread my favourite books in different translations. I especially had fun experiencing how Haruki Murakami's stories come to life in different languages. I often found that the english translations were the most pleasant to read. In any case, we're very lucky to have access to so many high quality translations of books!
Great reviews, Josh. I put Fairy Tale down, mostly to prioritize other books based on capacity but I'll get to it again. And Alex gifted me Babel so I hope to read that soon too!
Great reviews Josh! We gave Fairy Tale the same rating and had almost the exact same thoughts on it. I liked Babel a little less than you, but still found it to be a worthwhile, interesting book that I just felt could have trusted the reader a little more. I like the dual review format!
Get two instead of one, sound a pretty good deal (who will say no?). Great format. I'm reading salem's lot at the moment but intrigued me fairly tell and babel looks like my kind of reading (terminologies, etymologies). I was a training engineer and one of my favorites part were the research and subsequent development of a training program that involves not only practice but also the terminologies, etymologies and the source of the theories, ( i enjoyed it) ....As always great video ✨
Great dual review Josh! I'm gonna read Fairy Tale next year, let the talk around it die down a bit. I don't know if I'll read Babel anytime soon, I've read the first book in poppy War and enjoyed it for the most part but haven't continued.
Nice reviews, Josh. I'm really interested in Babel being a language teacher and speaker of two languages myself, but hesitant because of all the character stuff I've heard from you and others about her writing. Hmmmm.
Thanks! I can definitely recommend Babel. It seems I'm in the minority with not connecting with her characters, so maybe you will. But I loved the etymology and discussions of translation, and she knows what she's talking about.
Excellent reviews! I think this format works well for you. Of the two of these, it sounds like I will enjoy Babel more, but I’m sure I’ll eventually read both of them.
Great format! I think you can do different formats simply based on How much there is to say about the book. When there is a medium amount to say, then two books work really well in one video
Thank you, Jan, it seems people are enjoying this format, so I'll likely do more of these when I have books I don't want to do a full review but want to give more than a super short review in my monthly wrap-ups.
Once again, your review is spot on!! The second half of the book really was a letdown. 11/22 is really one of my favs. How did you feel about the Hulu show Castlerock? I thought it was great. Thanks again for the great content and based on this review I'm going to read babel.
I think this format is great. I agree with most of what you said about Fairy Tale. I think I didn't love the ending as much as you did, but I tihnk the ending would have been better had he spent less time in the middle part and just fleshed out the ending a bit more. It felt more like an outline of a great ending, rather than the ending I wanted. I haven't read Babel yet. Glad to get your take!
We share very similar thoughts on both books! I love what you shared about how you approach the word “moderato” with your students and the walking contradiction that is every 17-year old 😂! I have a soft spot for teenagers and yet I totally agree. Great video, Josh!

Great point! Thanks for watching as well as your comment

Awesome - thanks! Glad you liked it
Love the format! I am thinking of starting to read SK and I might have to include fairy tale in a future purchase 📚
Thank you! Fairy Tale isn't his best, but I still really enjoyed a lot of it. With lower expectations, I might have liked it even more!
Great dual review Josh - I like this format best. Its like getting two beets for the price of 1 at the grocery store.
Nice analogy! Glad you enjoyed it, Chirag, I'm sure I'll do more of these dual reviews.
Great review and video structure.
Thank you!
I like dual review. Perfect length and thoughtful too. Well done.
Thanks so much!
I love a dual review on books. It is a nice way of reviewing books that are on hype at the moment...
Glad you enjoyed it! I’ll definitely be doing more of these in the future.

Understood with Fairy Tale, and it seems most of us have the same criticisms of the book! I hope you enjoy Babel!
I'm definitely will read Babel once the waiting list at the library has shortened I haven't started on fairytale yet
I really like the duel reviews you definitely should continue doing this 👍
Thank you! I like the format and glad others do too!

Great minds think alike, eh? :). Glad you like the format - I'll definitely do more of these.

Glad you like it! Based on your comment, you'll likely enjoy those same aspects in Babel that I did.

Thanks, RJ! I think Babel is a stronger work than the rest of the Poppy War, so maybe consider that one first? Hard to say!
Nice reviews, Josh. I'm really interested in Babel being a language teacher and speaker of two languages myself, but hesitant because of all the character stuff I've heard from you and others about her writing. Hmmmm.

Your review of Fairy Tale was absolutely spot on. Basically you said what I thought when I finished it.
An unfortunate missed opportunity for King in my opinion. :(
Yep dual review!!👏👏👏
Thanks, Penny!
Excellent reviews! I think this format works well for you. Of the two of these, it sounds like I will enjoy Babel more, but I’m sure I’ll eventually read both of them.
Thank you, Chas! I liked the format and will likely do more of these. Of the two, I definitely would recommend Babel first!

Definitely going to be getting Babel.
I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the video
You're welcome, and I hope it helped!

Thanks, John! I enjoyed Castle Rock quite a bit. They really nailed the atmosphere, and I liked the trajectory of each season. I hope you enjoy Babel!

Glad you like the format! Good point about Fairy Tale - he expanded the wrong part of the tale unfortunately. A missed opportunity. :(
I have babel on my shelf but scared to get into it 😆
Ha! Yeah, Kuang often takes thing dark places!
I've had the same issue with R.F. Kuang I have never been able to connect with her characters.
Glad it's not just me!

Thanks! I talked about Moderato with one of my orchestras today! lol.
