Yes! He perfectly summed up why the term ‘recovery’ and the industry around it is so damn toxic. I will never go to a meeting or speak any of those cliches, I just simply don’t use drugs anymore. And I’m proud. Time to figure out what makes you happy and think outside the box.

I found the interview very interesting, thank you..
In addition to the addiction, Karr apparently suffers from schizophrenia, which makes it more difficult to treat his addiction problem. He talked about one thing that I think is important and that is rarely addressed: the effectiveness of recovery, where an addict has to adapt 100 percent to the recovery process.
In my opinion, recovery treatment should also adapt to the needs of each addict. People are not all the same and do not respond the same to treatment. It seems that addicts are rarely asked what they need, but are told what they have to do.
I like Karr and wish him all the best.

The treatment that is available isn't done the right way. Many don't complete or end up relapsing. There are so many things that can be done better and make it a little less uncomfortable but no treatment centers really try and that's mostly because it's a lucrative industry. They want people to come back. There's so much stigma pertaining to addicts that most people don't care. The attitude is mostly, well just stop and get ur isht together u POS. There's many changes that can be made and it's mind blowing that no one at least addresses these things.

@@krystiangorski6201 Thank you for your comment. It confirms my suspicion that the treatment is not very much geared to the needs of the addicts. It is a shame that profit so often takes precedence over the well-being of the people.

I totally get what he's saying. Give these people a home, proper medical care, and food in their bellies...that's all they truly need. There are many "upstanding" individuals who are addicted to the same substances found on the streets, but because they have means, no one is talking about addiction in their circles. Society's take on such things is largely insane. We need to meet these people on their own terms, and for gods sake, give them a roof over their heads, a private space they can call their own. They'll sort their addictions out from there, or not...but it's basic humanity that's needed here; not moralized preaching, not criminalizing individuals' coping mechanisms. Housing, medical treatment, and basic sustenance should be everyone's right, not a privelege.

Thats why they've introduced Peer Advocates into treatment, ppl who advocate for those dealing with substance abuse & have been through it themselves. Experience is one of the main requirements of being a Peer advocate/Recovery coach (they call it a few different things). You'd also be surprised how many counselors have actually been there as well, they just cant share that with ppl given the guidelines of their profession.

    • @unheardvoices_official
