- Today I'm reviewing an NES game that was originally supposed to be an adaptation of The Terminator.
#JourneyToSilius #NES #retroreview
Journey to Silius was played on a Retron5 and recorded on a AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus. All music comes from the game soundtrack.

Sunsoft, Capcom and Konami really knew how to get the most out of the NES hardware, sound wise.
And Tim Follin
On Sunsoft's part, Naoki Kodaka is probably one of the best NES era composers, like, he did not miss! He worked with programmers to do some crazy stuff with the NES's sound chip for sure. Just listen to Batman on Nestopia; in the preferences they let you turn specific channels off to lose bass or drums or whatever.
@@The_Last_Pants_Youll_Ever_Wear Batman NES is one of my favorite gaming soundtracks. It was quite perfect.
Sunsoft make some of the best games especially with their music. Sunsoft music is a league of its own.
Yes! All their games I've played have had very memorable and catchy soundtracks.
Fuckin A mate, sunsoft was the OG
Absolutely. Only played Ufouria as a kid but as an adult discovering Sunsoft's other NES games and soundtracks has been great.
They were the Rareware of their time
Fair review. Great but tough game. And yeah Sunsoft were amazing NES developers. Batman was my first game from them way back a year or so after it came out and I got it for £25 (which was a sale price back then cos most games were about £40) and I loved it. Still my fave Batman game to this day (sorry, not an Arkham fan at all)
5:04 "The story is kind of nonsensical, but also not really important"
Sounds like a quote for my biography
You know who else that quote would work for?
My mom.
I can't stop listening to this soundtrack since watching your video. It's so good. Thanks!
No problem
@@Cannotbetamed1 🍔me too
Man, Sunsoft made some epic NES music back in the day.
Looked like blaster master
I couldn't agree with you more.
One of the best NES soundtracks
There's actually a ROM hack of this game that puts Terminator elements back in. It's an interpretation of what the game might have been like if sunsoft didn't lose the Terminator license. Check it out sometime.
thanks for always having captions! i really appreciate them as someone with auditory processing problems!!!
No problem! As long as I have a script there will always be captions. Need to figure out something to do with the unscripted videos though.
... Pardon?
Really great review! I picked this up ages ago for like $5 at a local laundromat and never did finish it. Seeing you replay it and your explanation on the difficult sections makes a lot of sense now in retrospect. I have to track down my old copy and try it again :).
Damn i feel old.. i remember when my friend got this, also when he got super mario 2... and 3 later on.
Great review Pam, you hit all the relevant points for this game. I just wanted to mention for those interested that the Japanese version of the game is called Raf World, and has a more generic soldier with a helmet as the protagonist instead of the Rick Astley lookalike we got in the west.
One of my favorite childhood games. Excellent review. I love your voice.
Don't know how i missed this channel for so long. Great content. Thnx for your hard work.
Glad you found it :)
I remember playing this game back in 1990 when my nephew brought it over. I never forgot the music from level 2. I love the 8bit machines.
That post-apocalyptic back drop in green really is so cool for Stage 1. I really enjoyed this video, thanks for the cool context regarding this game's Terminator history and Mega Man characteristics :)
I wish they had used some more unique designs like stage 1 for some of the other stages as well
This game was so fun back in my heyday. And Sunsoft music in games was always great.
Great video. Thanks.
Such a cool game. The stage 1 theme may be my favorite song on any NES game. Just pure adrenaline.
I remember playing this. My brother brought it home from work to do a play through. This was when he was a game play counselor at Nintendo in Redmond, WA. Fun time to be a kid!
Great review! It's awesome that people are still talking about this game I haven't got to play yet it's on my gamer bucket list.
It's a really fun one with some of my favorite NES music ever. You won't be disappointed!
I never heard of this one. Gonna try it out! Thanks for another amazing video, Pam!
I got this game a few years ago when I discovered it on RUclips. It’s a really good game. The mechanics are super polished.
I still listen this OST at least once a year, gives me good vibes and memories of me watching my cousin play this game.
I love the coverage of the NES favorites; you always give them a fair review.
The music and gameplay in this one are top-notch! I remember renting this one regularly because it did take some memorization!
I always thought Jake looked like a Zack Morris in body armor.
You’re on my list of RUclipsrs I’d like to join for a two player co-op title! Always quality content in the uploads!
I always thought Jay's hair looked really goofy in the American release and I prefer the PAL version where he's wearing a helmet.
Either way it's a great game and the music never gets old.
Thanks for this review! I really enjoyed this game when I was very young, but it was my neighbors, we moved, and I couldn't remember what the name of the game was.... I'd been looking for it off and on. Wow, this took me back to 1992.
A good review in 7 minutes. Played it thanks to you and its pretty fun
Best Terminator game ever made? Also, he looks like Fry from Futurama.
Then that means the final boss must be bender.
"War-torn cities and ominous clouds" is the best way to describe what I look for in my games; excellently phrased.
Thank you. I appreciate your user name.
Excellent quality review. I may give this game a try, someday.
The first area looked just like that NES terminator game, at least enough for me to draw a comparison.
Excellent review! Really enjoyed it
Very fun, challenging game with an exceptional soundtrack. Great review!
this game is amazing, I rented at a rental store here in my city, after contra is my favorite run n gun at NES I beat in less than two days, good memories.
RUclips suggested this, and it did not disappoint. A very journalistic review. Well done! Subscribed!
Welcome to the channel
I first heard about this game a few years, and immediately had to buy it. Another great review Pam.
Great review. I always really liked this game as a kid.
Stage 1 music hooked me when I was a kid
Very nice. I love when games have an interesting backstory to their creation like this one did. Thanks for covering a game that isn't the kind of thing you see a ton of attention lavished on. In fact, I don't know that I'd ever even heard of this one, but now, I may just have to give it a try.
I just found you today and love your reviews! You've found a lot of NES titles I've never heard of. That's pretty cool!
Thanks! Glad I could introduce you to some new games
Nice review. I am going too keep a lookout for this one.
I see your channel has grown significantly since I last visited and always I love the content! Keep up the great work and congratulations!
Thank you so much!
I used to play a bootleg Famicom copy of this one... Thanks for the memories.
The sound track to this game Is So good that often I put it into my NES, turn it on, and rock out for 10 minutes before going...oh crap I have a game to play!
It has been a minute, I use to comment on every one of your videos but I haven't seen one pop up in my subscriptions for awhile ..damn you RUclips!
RUclips can be a real jerk.
Pam excellent, everyone does retro game reviews , continue to be unique and review games no one else has .
The music man. The music.
First time I've watched any of your videos and I must say your review was awesome. Very well done!!! I like very much the educate way you speak. Congratulations!!!
Same impressions I got about the game and haven't finished it yet.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video
@@Cannotbetamed1
Thank you for taking the time to answer me. You love what I love, and you are very kind and very beautiful ;-) ... just the kind of girl I would marry
This is such a underrated gem and needs more attention. 😄
And now it's getting that well deserved attention since it just got released on the Nintendo Switch!
the gotcha level design is incredibly obnoxious.
I just stumbled across your channel, cool video! Journey to Silius has such awesome music.
Thanks!
Your outro theme (The Title Theme from Journey to Silius) is one of the best tunes on the NES. I finally picked this one up a few years back, but I need to set aside some solid time for it and ramp up my "NES patience level" before I start. Great job as always!
Thanks! The soundtrack took a bit to grow on me by the more I listen to it he more I like it
One of my first games. Here in Europe Jay wore a helmet though, because of the violence regulations. Same thing that replaced the Contra characters with robots. Like the others said, one of the best soundtracks on the NES. Same composer as to mentioned Batman and Blaster Master. He produced the music in a special way giving that "full" sound.
Great review!
In het original Famicom version Jay also wears a helmet. I don't think it has anything to do with violence regulations in this particular case.
Thanks!
I never noticed how similar JTS is to MegaMan, but now that you pointed it out I can't unsee it. There are so many similarities including those beginner's traps where you jump down a screen and there's no way to know where it's safe to land the first time. The music is so good in this game too, just like most NES Sunsoft games.
Awesome review Pam! This game looks rather fun.
Thanks to this review, I'm going to check this out.
Very excellent in depth review! Subscribed!
Thanks!
Megaman contra and ninja gaiden had a baby 😂
Same! Exactly what I said
Heya. Just landed here on a whim. Must say I like the direction of your reviews. No gimmicks, not over the top. You hit all the valid points that make a well rounded appraisal of a *Coughs* POPULAR game. I like when people try to call commercial success' "Hidden Gems" just because it's not in the pantheon of Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Castlevania. I'll check out some more of your videos... though after reading the comment section section here, I'll probably shy away from that. The thirst is real, it seems.
Hey, thanks!
I remember this one. Very cool game. Thank you. Subscribed!
Hey, thanks
I always enjoy tunes in a Sunsoft NES game. Great review!
Thanks!
OMG obstacles like that stuff at 3:25 drive me NUTS. Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania are full of that stuff and I just can't handle it. Cool video! This is the first I've seen from your channel and I'm subbing now. Also, gotta say I LOVE that boxed copy of Planescape Torment behind you. I'm super jealous :D
Welcome to the channel. I love Planescape Torment :)
Great review!
Some of those upright walking robots look like xenomorphs.
Enjoyable review , I was unaware of this game and now I am going to seek for it .
Its a must for the NES. Awesome.
Great Video and Review, ill need to play this one day
you do a really professional job! the graphics of silius looks great
Good Job on this review. I like watching the NES, SNES, Sega & Sega Genesis game reviews. This game looks like it could be a "hidden gem" for the NES.
It is a hidden gem for the NES. It sold terribly so it's not common.
@@LUCKO2022 Thanks for the info. I'm not very familiar with the NES and SNES games. I had a Sega Genesis when I was younger.
Thank you for helping me to relive while narrating my childhood! You are good at what you do chick keep it up, fresh sub!
Hello!
@@Cannotbetamed1 I'm actually playing the game right this second. Definitely a Hidden Gem! Thank you so much from Northern New Hampshire
One of my favorite games growing up. I used to have this game memorized. I would put on music (usually a favorite cassette) and see if I could beat the game before the album ended. Gah, I feel so old. Haha!
Great review thank you!
I was about 7 when I got this game and cant wait to play it again.
Never got a chance to play this one. Thanks for your opinions on it & keep up thr good work.
Another solid review miss Pam. I still haven't had much of a chance to play this title for the nes but at least its short length will make for a fairly easy game to complete and permanently retire. Thankfully I have the patience of a saint so hopefully this game won't give me too much trouble.
Great review Pam! I got this for Christmas and while "challenging" is a great word I just say hard as hell LOL Maybe exerience will help me. 😊
holy crap, this game is 1000 times better than The Terminator on NES!
Great Game! Sunset had it going on back in the day with the Batman games, Blaster Master, this one and many more.
Quite enjoyed this one! As I'm not _massively_ into the NES, there's a large chunk of the library which I've not really experienced (doubly so being from a PAL region where the library was like a third the size of the NTSC one), and with the discovery of the Terminator reel stuff, it's certainly one I want to check out for sure.
Love the 1st stage music!!!
great video pam! will give this one a go
Great looking game!! It looks like something I would like. Glad I got to see it.
Great video, Silius is my all time favorite NES game.
This is on my list of games to find. I have infinite patience for these kinds of games so those unlimited continues speak to me. Thanks so much for an informative review!
You actually only get three continues, so the final stage is a pain to memorize.
Sorry to be misleading, there are in fact only three continues. Still worth a play though.
@@Cannotbetamed1 I'd still play it anyway!
Pam Pam Pam, Thank You, the enthusiasm is enthralling and it adds a spoonful or twwo of special nutrition content wise as you are willing to share your personal view point of what is the main draw, and then there is some history, I Think it is especially endearing to hear details and a will power to share the nifty details and quirks of a very straight forward game. I was given it via my sister as a birthday one year and I have now passed it over to my neice, while my sister concluded that she can play games when visit my house I actually gave retroduo to sister brother in law and their daughter as ONE a few years ago at december 25th. My sister bought it in the influence of the shop keeper in gameshop that used to have branches in Mörby Centrum and Solna, now to get to them one must travel to South Stockholm with is a much further trip and bigger roads and more cars involved, this was Late Ninetees, my sister brought it home when she informed this boss of the, store, that still is around and has told me: As long as I am alive I will get you everything you have ordered, when I travelled to Stockholm he stressed this) I must say first time I was notified that you made a vid on this game I thought kind of like my, Journey to Silius I have that in a box down below where my desk is!" I never got passed the first level I must admit, but the enthusiasm you are willing to share in abudance with us, The Onlookers is brash, and even if I have not played it for years and have passed it over to Elvira, there indeed was something special to me about it, the back log info I dug up, brought forward and typed about over here shows how easy one can connect in a dynamic way with a run and jump game that is programmed to be so straight forward, and as the boss at gameshop.se said, it is like MEGA MAN, yes, it is like MEGA MAN even in how you can run out of ammuntion and Health in the respective bars and in that you must not be afraid to defend yourself and this is probably why you can Always run away or just avoid baddies without end, I am doing this mistake av whole lot when playing Dracula X on Saturn, while the game play there is much more dynamic and prolonged with advanced detail, the moral decree to be ready to fight back is liken to the situation in Silius I take it, and atleast that is what it makes me think about, as Dracula X brings experience level ups to enhance the way one expands in way of fighting back in combat or picking up some badie's weaponry, in a conclusion of a sometimes surprising fight. I wanted to note on how this Review was very consise but still you managed to go into fine detail too, indeed like MEGA MAN, but not a "Knock off" as hipsters would say. I was trying to follow along with this Review and had to leave to return later, when a game like this comes about in the Review format I feel I must be able to concentrate and contemplate while watching to be up for it, as I demands me to in some ways interact en be an Active part taker almost as I must be ready to play the game myself while watching, and it was Worth to stand back and wait to Watch it all when I was more up to it, as you might have seen when I talk on games, Music or Books in my vids or type something here, I cannot go about short and sweet, I cannot make consise works and analyse it in few Words or a few strikes here and there, are some factual things I find enthralling about the things you present and verily I speak truly about what you do, thanks Pam Oh Pam, it is great that you put a not so well known title in the lime light.
I remember playing an early demo of this at the nintendo powerfest championships in NJ many yrs ago.
The Dig???!!! Subbed.
Also, great video. Thank you.
:D
Good review. I just completed this game myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music is awesome to. I was thinking about doing a no hit run but there is one part on level 3 that is seemingly impossible to get past without getting hit at all. If it wasnt for that i would put time into and see how i do. A no death run is more realistic and i will definitely attempt.
I have just finished a no death run of the game and it was fun.
I purchased this game back when it was released. I loved it back then. Not sure how I would feel about it now. I recall really loving the graphics, simply yet crisp. The music, wel,, it was fantastic.
I see some enemies that look like xenomorphs without tails. Looks like they took influence from a handful of late 70s/80s sci-fi, aside from just Terminator. Great review, Pam. Definitely gonna give this one a play through ✌
Thanks!
Yes! I've been anxiously waiting for this review since you announced it some time ago. One of my favorite NES games and probably my favorite NES soundtrack of all time. Well done!
Fun fact; in the Japanese version of the game, Jay looks a whole lot different with a full body combat gear and a helmet. He looks exactly like those resistance fighters in the Terminator movie.
I like the Japanese sprite design more. Though the NA one does kind of have hair like Kyle Reese.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Ha, I've never thought of that! I can see that now you mentioned it!
Great video. Hope you are keeping well
Your reviews are top notch
Thank you
Great video as always!
Thanks!
Great job, Pam. This is a game I’ve been after for a while and have yet to come across it. It definitely seems right up my alley. I typically enjoy games that require memorization and multiple play throughs to complete the game; that doesn’t bother me at all.
Thanks! I hope you come across a copy for a good price.
Great video as always
Thanks!
I like the cartoon Pam and the cartoon dog at the end of the video lol
Nice. If I see it in the wild, I'll definitely give it a try.
Good review, thanks!
:)
Love the review :)
It's a fact that Journey to Silius was a Terminator game from the start. Earlier this year footage was found from the cutscenes. Sadly, there are no known footage from gameplay, but there is a hack out there that is quite entertaining!
Nice. This one went under my radar.
This looks really solid - except for those unfair bits. I had no idea this existed. Thanks Ms. Untamed!
Great game with fantastic music! Great review!
Thanks!
One of the better off shoot NES titles I remember playing this when it first came out. Very difficult but a lot of fun and you have to remember this is the era when NES's kept on glitching out so beating any game was a monumental task.
My NES usually only gave me issues when trying to start a game.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Mine gave me issues starting, during, ending, heck anytime. However it was very interesting to learn that this was a recycled terminator title I never knew that but it makes absolute sense now that you mentioned it.
