This video is another gem in the RUclips treasure trove! I couldn’t figure this out on my own and struggled to find info outside of your video. Thank you!
I struggled too, but then, piece by piece, figured it out! I've also started putting my poles in the pocket where the hydration bladder would go. That seems to be a good spot to store them if you don't need them right away. For example, I used my trekking poles going up to the top of a mountain (check out my "Lone Peak" video), then put them away in that pocket since I wasn't planning to use them at all for the entire decent. Thanks for watching!!!
I’ve owned my Adv Skin 12 for 3+ years now and JUST today stumbled across this video. I have already caved in and bought the quiver for my poles. But I don’t care for the quiver. This is literally the only video I’ve seen explaining how the heck to use all the elastic cables on Salomon packs. They’re so fiddly and stick out everywhere. I removed several from my pack. Now I will experiment with your approach. Thank you!
Thank you from Hong Konger, I searched for a long time not match video teach people how to attach pole. I just purchase ADV skin 8 women, you save me :)
Big, big help. Thanks. As others have said, I never would have figured this out on my own. But I just got some folding poles, and was able to hit the trails and get them stowed out of the way, just like you described. Which was awesome!
I'm so happy this has helped you out! I've also put the poles in the back where the bladder goes and that's worked well when you don't need them for a while but you want them tucked away and secure.
So I got some new trekking poles for Father’s Day and was trying to figure out how to put them on my Salomon vests. A quick internet search pulled up a rather familiar face lol! Thanks for the great videos and perhaps someday we’ll meet on the trails! 👍
Haha! Strava friends forever, but like you said, hopefully we'll meet in person on the trails one day soon. Glad you found the video. Hopefully I'll be able to publish more valuable and fun content (this video is actually one of my oldest).
Fabulous! Thanks for checking out the video. This is one of my originals but still helpful to a lot of people. Not very professional but at least it's informative.
I recently used the attachment loops at the bottom like you describe later in the video, where the poles fit snug against my back. This way felt great at first just knowing that they weren't flying around back there. After 20 miles and a hot shower I discovered a large silver dollar size chafed area on my lower back from wearing them this way. It may work awesome for a different torso, and a shorter run, but could turn into a sore by mile 75. Just today I tried the poles vertically in the zig zag cords on the back and just tightened up the end of the cord and that worked beautifully... this would be a challenge to accomplish without taking the pack off, which is annoying. Next I will try the front attachment way you described and see how that flies. Thank you so much, these videos are so helpful!!
This is great feedback! On a recent 50K, I started with the poles in the back and eventually just ended up carrying them (carbon poles). Even with the convenience of putting them back in place, it was almost more convenient to just hold them and keep running and then use them when I need. I'm also found that I can tuck the poles in the main pouch where the bladder goes. This requires taking the pack off to put them back in but it's a great place to store them if I know I won't need them for a little while.
Thank you, I heard it was possible to attach them, but couldn’t find any info until I found your video 👍 now I’ll enjoy my first 100 miler tomorrow with them attached🏃
Thank you! I have been trying to figure out how to use those random cords and weird hooks! I feel like salomon could do a better job explaining their features. I love my ADV skin 5 though!
I absolutely agree with you. I did a bunch of googling and couldn't figure out how to attach my poles. I finally came across one picture on Salomon's website and figured it out from there :-)
Great video and very informative. New to poles so im trying to figure out where to store them on the vest. Thanks. Just an aside, what are the 2 clips inside the top of the back storage area for? They are side by side. Id hate to be missing out on something good. TY
If I'm thinking of the same thing that you're referring to, one clip is to hold a bladder in place and there's also a stretchy cord on the inside top that I've seen people strap poles to as well. Not sure if that same stretchy cord as on the new packs, at least it's not on the new ADV SKIN 5. Anyways, hope that helps and thanks for checking out the video!
I'm glad you came across it and found the video helpful! On my last Ultra and a few long training runs, I'm also found putting the tracking poles in the main pouch where the bladder goes useful. It allows me to store them where they won't be moving around a lot and when I don't need them right away. Lastly, please consider subscribing if you haven't done so already. I've created a lot of new content since this video and have much more planned! Cheers!
I like to stow them using your first technique for the top fixture, but the bottom fixture in the manufacturer position, therefore they sweeping backwards from the top leaving space for the pockets to expand. Nice vid 😃👍
Thanks for checking out the video! This is actually one of my earlier videos from a couple years ago and it remains one of my most popular! I'm hoping to get the new Solomon ADV SKIN pack and then I'll do an updated video on that. I've also put the poles in the same compartment where the larger rear bladder would go. That works well if you need to store them out of the way and don't need to use them right away. Cheers!
What 50K are you running? I've got a 50k tomorrow as well. Devil on the Divide here in Colorado, though if I'm honest, I'm just going to carry my poles for this race.
Sweet! I'm considering poles for longer runs and it's cool to see how easy they are to stow. Do you mind if I ask what size? I'm not sure if I should go larger than my ski poles.
So the most recent Mens Salomon Active Skin 8 (2021] doesn't have these loops for poles. Not a biggie as I have some bungie shock cord and spring cincher thingies in my camping repair kit.
Thank you! I just recently discovered another similar method to mount the trekking poles to the side of the pack next to the water bottles. Check out my Instagram page for that. I've also put the poles in the back of the pack where the bladder goes and that's effective so they're not moving around at all but it requires taking the pack off to put them back in. Thanks for checking out the video!
Thanks for checking out the video! I've also put the poles in the main back pouch where the bladder would go. I found that useful to put them in a place where they are secure and if I don't need them right away.
I bought the Salomon quiver last year to store the poles but found that its moving around too much on the ADV Skin 12. Will try your suggestion as it looks sensible and a much better solution. Might also consider a separate belt; they are quite lightwight and you can store something up front too if your bag is already tightly packed, e.g. for a 100miler that requires lots of gear.
I thought about wearing a belt to hold my poles and maybe some nutrition as well when you have to pack a lot. I've also put the poles in the compartment where the rear bladder would go. It's a good place to hold them when you don't need them right away.
These are the Salomon MTN OUTDOOR poles. They have the 16mm shaft: www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/mtn-outdoor.html#color=10968 Solamon now offers the Sense Ultra Foldable poles too which are even more lightweight and have a 14mm shaft, but they also cost more: www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/sense-ultra-foldable.html#color=10983 Hope that helps!
Hi Chad, how did you attach the bottom part of the quiver on the Adv 12? I only have a super small loop and none of the adjustment pieces of the quiver fit in it.
if I understand what you're saying correctly, I haven't used the quiver bag. Looking at my pack, there are two loops (one on the left and one on the right) on the back bottom part of the bag that you might be able to connect the quiver to. Hopefully that helps.
Unfortunately, the Active 8 doesn't have the same cords and doesn't have pole attachment options (as far as I can tell). That said, I have used the bladder compartment to store my Z poles and that works well to keep them out of the way but handy when needed. I did this for a 50k race last year where I knew that I wasn't going to use the poles until the 2nd half. With this method, it's easy to pull the poles out, but you'll likely have to take the vest off to put them back in. For my race, once I pulled them out, I simply ran with them in my hands as I was using them on and off during the remainder of the race. Hope that helps and thanks for watching the video!!!
I got these poles for Christmas. They are the Salomon MTN Outdoor poles. They're carbon fiber and fold in the three pieces so they're extra small when you don't need to use them in very lightweight. I plan to use them in the Dirty30 race (50K) in May and likely also in the Devil on the Divide 50K race in September. www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/mtn-outdoor.html#color=10968
Thanks! I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to figure out you can move the loops.....now I feel slightly silly since once you do it , it's kinda obvious. HA!
I thought the same thing! I've also started putting my z trekking poles in the top of the main pouch where the bladder would go. That seems to be a pretty good place to hold them where they won't move or bounce around at all and it's a good place to put them if you don't need the trekking poles readily available.
I double checked, and the women's Adv Skin 8 does have the same loop/straps however the Sense series (2, Ultra 5/8) and the Active Skin 8 Set does not have the same loop/straps. Thanks for keeping me honest and for watching the video! Means a lot!

Awesome ! Found this one just in time for my next big adventure... thank for taking the time to do this review.
Just got some polls. Thanks for sharing. I have found straps on my pack that I did not know were there. 😊
I dont know why this information isnt available from salomon. Thank you for putting this together.
I've wondered the same thing! That said, they just came out with new packs and have done a better job showing pole attachment options.

Same. I especially can't figure out the random cords on the back top/sleeve area.
This was so helpful, I don´t have this one, I have the crsoss eason 15 but at least i know how I can try to work with the straps etc on the pack!

what about your extra velcro strap in the middle that you added? no mention of that??????
That was just an extra piece of Velcro that holds the poles together.

Hi Chad. Which salomon poles
is that? U got the exact model name?
These are the Salomon MTN OUTDOOR poles. They have the 16mm shaft: www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/mtn-outdoor.html#color=10968
Solamon now offers the Sense Ultra Foldable poles too which are even more lightweight and have a 14mm shaft, but they also cost more: www.salomon.com/en-us/shop/product/sense-ultra-foldable.html#color=10983
Hope that helps!
I should mention that the MTN Outdoor poles are on sale currently, making them cheaper than the Sense Ultra Foldable poles.

I think attaching the pole infront is more comfortable if your not using the softflask instead a camel bag reservoir.
I would probably agree. Balancing the pack makes it much more comfortable when running with it.
Thanks a lot!

See Chad Run Aha. That’s vital information. I have the ACTIVE skin 8. My favorite for everyday running.
What about the adv skin 5?
The advanced skin 5 and 12 have the same loops and straps. The only difference is helping the pouch/compartment is on the back.
I think I'll go with the 5, what size is your 12?
what kind of pole is that?
Salomon MTN Outdoor Z poles. The carbon fiber with a 16 mm shaft and fold three ways so they're nice and compact.
