  • In this video, we get the chicken coop at Union Mission in Charleston, WV completed and to the point where we could move the chickens from the brooder and into the coop. They will hang out inside for a couple of days and then we will give them access to the yard.

I think this was an awesome project. I however would switch the metal roosting bars. My personal thoughts is not going to be good in the winter. Truly a great addition

Are you taking the flying predators that don't care about fences?

Coop looks nice. The metal pipe on the ramp will get very hot in the sun. Hard on chicken feet, I tried it LOL. On the roost they can't grip the round pipe very well.

No windows in the coop? I'd be very concerned using conduit for roosting bars. Chickens would much rather enjoy roosting on a flat 2 x 4. I'd be afraid the bars would be too cold for the chickens and hard for them to perch at night. No shade or protection in the run from rain and aerial predators?

I’d say the conduit bars are too narrow; chickens really need something 2” - 3” diameter to avoid foot issues.

The open soffits offer adequate light. Need darker coop to promote laying. Under or inside the coop will provide cover

No window is bad. The chickens get up with the sun. No light from a window will make sad Chickens.

@@jimputnam2044 I totally agree. Plus having windows you can open during the summer months to help let the air in and keep the coop dry . We have windows on all four sides of our coop and the nest boxes are on the outside of the coop. We built a shelf perch over the top and it's plenty dark for the chickens to go in and lay there eggs

@@RedToolHouse Put the nest boxes on the outside of the coop for easy access to the eggs. We have windows on all four sides of our coop for great airflow, and a dryer coop. The nest boxes on the outside are dark enough for the girls to lay. We built a roosting shelf over the nest box area to keep the light out of the nest boxes. You need the extra ventilation in the coop with that many birds. Windows open late spring through early fall.

Why didn't you paint the inside white, it will brighten it up. You should put vynal or linoleum on the floor will make cleaning easier
