Amazing playwright. His political opinions were pretty stupid though.
Whatever you think about economic justice, it is not Communism. Whatever you think about social justice it is not fascism. And whatever you think about Global Warming and what we should do about it, "haha" is moronic take.
Artists often think with intuition and emotion and are incapable of thinking rationally. Mamet is a case in point

Always a Mamet fan without ever having heard him speak. Somehow I was afraid that he would turn out to be an effete Harvard intellectual. How wonderful to find out he is a hard working, plain speaking, common sense kind of solid American. Maybe even a fellow Deplorable? Great interview!

  • @Paelorian
    @Paelorian 6 лет назад +8

I am so happy with Mamet's answer the the last question. Rather than list off a few favorite plays as I'm sure he's done many times and anyone can easily Google up, he just talks about what he wants to talk about and is much more entertaining for it. Even though I would have been happy to hear his favorite plays, that was better. Better to out something new out to the public. I think it's a great skill of experienced interviewees to give entertaining answers to boring questions and to know when it's appropriate to to ignore a point. I don't mean the equivocations of politicians who seek to avoid saying anything of substance, for this is the opposite. This is when people free to speak don't give a direct answer to a question for the purpose of giving a _more_ meaningful and substantive answer.

OMG, I’ve watched most, if not all of these Sunday Specials. And this one is by far the most insightful and impactful (if that’s a real real word now) of the lot. It was a true pleasure to listen to David’s wisdom and experience of the world. At the risk of sounding overly patronizing, I truly feel he perfectly nailed it when it comes to what is happening in our culture and his perspective exemplifies how a balanced person can and should approach our current world from a westerner’s perspective.

I have to agree. Like when Ben was talking about the restaurant experience. Mr. Mammet just said hey those people were just enjoying themselves. Vs following the lead of getting whipped in a rant about those people. If that what makes them happy fine if they want to live with their heads in the sand that is there choice. And no matter what you say or do that is how they are going to deal with life.
My take on that is. You can only worry about you dont worry about those people doing. Worry about yourself and do the best you can do for you.

First and foremost, I am a big David Memet fan after listening to him at Masterclass. Second, knowing what he knows about storytelling and the distinctions of revealing character through action, it's no wonder that he see right through the bs. “They are speaking to manipulate us, whether they know it or not, to sidestep our process of observations, cause all we know about a person’s character in real life is what they do.” -David Mamet, in Masterclass Dramatic Writing. He has a keen eye for truth and a keen eye for manipulation.

In my experience. I was raised as a Christian in a small town. Every Sunday my mother made us go to church. As I grew up and my family interacted with the church I noticed all the gossip and drama that was being created amongst the members and people that viewed as role models as a child I saw them fall in to less then respectable standing.
I then realized the hypocrisy of the church. I stopped going. Fast forward 20 years and I tried to go back. But I realized that no one at the church remembered me each week. Ibwould go in and people would see me as a visitor. Fact is no one remembered you unless you were putting money in the offering try. No one there cared about my spiritual health or my relationship with go all they wanted was for me to put money in the tray and they could care less of what happen to me.
In a nutshell that is why less people are going to church. People have realized that churches are nothing but a piggy bank. I can worship in my own home. Fellowship is pretty much dead anymore.

The reason movies suck now, on the whole, is because guy's like David Mamet aren't allowed to write them. They're shut out. Unless you have a platinum SJW card, the fake, coastal-elite swag, a propensity for showing up at award's ceremonies with a few choice words about Trump and a willingness to stand for every Meryl Streep speech, you're out. Not part of the club. Maybe things will get better, but for now, like a lot of other art forms, you have to go back in time to find the really good stuff.

I’ve respected him for years. I was so surprised to learn he is conservative, but not really. He’s very intelligent and a free thinker. So, it really makes sense. He does not identify as Republican, which also makes sense.

Just out of intense curiosity, why mute the word "Christ" in the phrase "for the love of [?]" at 26:29? It does not seem like a random mistake.

I hope Ben brings up Mamet's Oleanna and how prescient that writing was.

I love to see Libertarianism emerging despite the mainstream.

God Bless Libertarians ButThe problem My Friend is The Libertarian Party is Not a real political party. It's a debating society...not that there's anything wrong with that. Debating socities are a good thing, its where new ideas are formed.
      No Flame Intended.

Absolutely, however, Libertarianism is still finding its home amongst conservatives. Also, the Libertarian Party has managed to prove itself not actually libertarian in the last primary. I knew John McAfee wouldn't win the general elections, but I was hoping the Libertarian Party would recognize that he was the only libertarian in the primaries. Boy was I wrong.

"Absolutely, however, Libertarianism is still finding its home amongst conservatives."
      Absolutely!
Many decades ago I was looking at joining, I went to rallies/meetings, until I realized they spent most their time fighting over who was holier than thou, and little time trying to get members elected. Also there were those who's grasp on reality was just a bit....tenuous, and no one ever told them it was the XXth century not the 19th.
Still they serve a purpose. Tou might want to go on You Tube and type in "Dave Rubin". Good Stuff even though we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.
