      Agreed brother... America was never a "hey heres your freedom and a decent living", country, it was founded on people who physically chopped down trees and worked to build houses and farm for food. Its the land of opportunity, always was, always will be. You just gotta get out there and DO THAT SHIT YOURSELF.. WORK IS CALLED WORK FOR A REASON... welfare shouldnt even exist. If you cant find a single way to support yourself, then get up on outta here and go somewhere else. Plain and simple.... ANYONE, no matter WHERE U COME FROM, can make it. This was absolutely amazing. I love the fact that Mike pointed out one of the most damaging of all false dichotomies, that a welder can't be a philosopher, or a philosopher can't be a welder. We need well rounded individuals, and the arrogance of academia that assumes just because an individual works with their hands, said individual is somehow lacking in intellect is not only insulting, it is factually incorrect. It is conversations like this one that have the potential to actually do some good in a world that is in real need of some good. Ben and Mike, thank you.

      This supposed, and asserted (not proven), 'arrogance' in academe is no less prevalent amongst those who view those who work with their minds as 'not having a real job', is it not? And yet these complaints about 'arrogance' always seem to only come from one side. Perhaps there's a lot more room for attitude adjustments than you might think.

      Matthew Cordery What I see in the trades is that not only are people using their hands, they often are also using their minds to get things to work for them while not screwing up something for someone else. Not always, but a good tradesperson does. Now, that being said, I currently work for a HVAC contractor but also have a BSME. Often I come across equipment from a manufacturer (engineer designed) and think, "how in the hell are you supposed to work on this?!" Perhaps that it is where some of the distaste for "higher" education comes from. Ever try to work on your own vehicle?

Council house kid done well? No. I spent allo my student holidays grummadging around under floor boards running in pipes, up on roofs dropping flu liners, testing gas pipes (supervised btw) rodding blocked poo pipes etc. Thankfully, I qualified for free tuition and a maintenance grant (pre student loans)
      Each to their own, but I love my work and probably earn as much as someone with a BA liberal arts degree. Somewhat placates my guilt at robbing the UK taxpayer of paying for my "wasted time" in further education. I'd like to think that my boy will be the next Richard Dawkins or Stephen Hawking, but, realistically, it is unlikely that my work will be robotised and besides, I have a free labourer to send up chimneys.

      Good if you can work, try this with disabled kids to care for 24/7, I'm no socialist but I do think that the capitalist system is a bit unfair towards those who don't have the ability,
      For example I'm a 50yr old fully qualified carpenter and joiner, I have a 12 Yr old daughter who is non verbal Autistic with profound learning disabilities, thers my career fucked, no earning potential for presumably the rest of my life,
      The job I do now caring for her is infinitely more difficult work, it's 24/7/365, with zero financial compensation,
      Get off your ass and work doesn't make welfare easier to accept as my share of God's good earth,
      Western society still has room to grow, people can't work and thrive if they spend all their time and effort struggling to survive.
      Just because the system is good doesn't have to mean it can't be made better,
      Eradicate hunger and homelessness and I'll believe that the system works.

    • @thereaper2815
      @thereaper2815 5 лет назад +17

      @@Kipperbob What system works better? Is the queen feeding EVERYONE? I doubt it. The only way these people wouldn't starve is if we taught them how to track, trap, fish, and hunt. Even then, if you're homeless, you probably don't have the best work ethic. That's why you're homeless.

    • @Kipperbob
      @Kipperbob 5 лет назад +5

      @@thereaper2815 I think that the welfare state is a deterrent to work on the basis that in order to qualify for it you must remain unemployed, plus the administration costs are astronomical, it would be cheaper to just give everyone the means to pay for basic food and shelter regardless of how rich or poor they are, since all democratic states are essentially public services provision companies and the citizens elect the board of management or governance body, it's not a huge step to consider those who are entitled to vote shareholders, so call it a dividend from their shareholding in the state, the same idea as Basic Income but not money for nothing, dividend on your one non transferable share,

    I love Mike Rowe.....and his attitude is so perfect. My father is an example of what he describes: Dad grew up on a farm, farming. Went off to college, pre-law, studying English and Philosophy at a Jesuit University. By the end of Junior year, he had 1. joined the Navy and was in the Korean Conflict, 2. Met my mom. After four years of military and equal time in a long distance relationship, he came home. He farmed. He married mom. He quoted the philosophers, corrected our grammar, and cut tails and testicles from hogs. In other words, it is not an either or proposition. He always found willing conversationalists; his farm work was often hard, but satisfying and often left his mind free to ponder. He never stopped reading, staying up to date, and was an amazing conservation farmer (because he was a reader), which made his fellow farmers laugh. He challenged us with questions and ideas, and all of us became successful in what we did: the bottom line - work hard. Don't retire early. Be physically and mentally active ALL your life. Love you Ben, Love Mike Rowe. And his mom's letters just kill me! Hilarious.

Took only 2 years and $9.5k, afew years later I'm now making enough money that I bought a home, got a lifted truck, plenty of toys like rifles for hunting, a dog, fourwheeler, etc. And most recently to afford an engagement ring for my girlfriend. Life isn't perfect, there will always be challenges, but I feel I'm doing a good job and am alot better off than some of my peers who are in loads of debt from a degree for a job that doesn't exist. And heres the kicker, I took the most basic welding course I could. I got friends and relatives in the same field who did some in depth schooling for it and are making boat loads more than me. He was delineating how it is that intelligent, capable people choose what our society deems "menial work" and make it into fulfilling, productive work. If they made choices based only on what they thought would produce immediate happiness then they would follow the crowd into something easy or prestigious. Instead they pursued something less impressive, found meaning and worth in doing it well and that meaning and worth often results in...happiness. Satisfaction with being useful. Pride in providing for their family. The positive regard from those served well by their business.
      My husband and I own our own kind of Dirty Jobs type of business and I can attest to the truth of what I am saying. We could see this work as misery, I suppose, or we could focus on the value in hard work, the benefit we get from helping ithers and the security provided to our family financially. I think Mike Rowe would be a great president, because he has enough sense to not want to be president.
    A story goes that King George III asked American artist Benjamin West, what Washington intended to do, given the vast power given to the executive. West replied something to the effect of "he intends to resign and retire to his plantation."
    The King then said: "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world."
    That was Washington, that was Cincinnatus. That is the quality of a great leader: who only reluctantly assumes power, and happily gives it up when the task is done.
    Mike Rowe is that kind of man. Practical, humble, intelligent, consistent, honest, and with a tremendous appreciation for the worker.

    • @mrholdbutton971
      @mrholdbutton971 6 лет назад +5

      I really hope that our culture finds some way to inculcate Cincinattus back into the common culture. His example, was enough to convince some of the most ambitious and power-hungry people in history, to eschew power and look for a higher ideal. To emulate the praise and glory of Cincinattus, instead of take and hold onto power.
      Cincinattus' memory, and the corresponding ideal he embodies, made it literally taboo within Roman society to take and keep power. Even when Julius Caesar was made dictator for life, he still took great pains to try to be able to say he was still following Cincinattus' example by not taking all the power. Same with his successor, Augustus, who upon winning the Roman Civil war and becoming the first Emperor, refused to use the title of Imperium, so as not to violate the precepts that Cincinattus held within that culture.
      It continues to shape the way people think about and wield power, even unto today. As you note, Washington took the example to heart, and willingly gave up power, and the King declared him to be the Greatest Man in the World. The tradition of giving up power after 2 terms was continued until FDR, then cemented into our system via a Constitutional Amendment, to make sure it was abided by so long as the Republic remained.
      We all seem to inherently understand that the grace and virtue that comes with not lusting for power, and wielding power responsibly, and in service to their community. Everyone gets it, but few seem to have the ethical where-with-all to live it. We need examples which embody that trait and universal aspect of human understanding, because it gives people a litmus test, to consider, and aim for. We seem to primary learn from mimicry, and we need good people like Cincinattus, Washington, and as you note Rowe, to give us the model which we can mimic.

Became an API boiler/pressure vessel inspector at refinery. I love it, make 2x$ as attorney and my back problems are gone because I climb scaffolding and get exercise.

    Who else wants to see Jordan Peterson engage in a long form discussion about manual work and its potential roll in a meaningful life? I, for one, want to see the virtues of the manual trades extolled in Petersonian language, placed rightly into their position in the Petersonian philosophical framework.
    I've heard snippets from Peterson about wisdom gleaned from his own experience building/renovating properties, and have heard him say explicitly that being a "tradesman" is a "noble" and "worthy" path to pursue. He said once, "plumbers have saved more lives than doctors" which is profound and drove his point home with oomph (and it's also probably true). I know that Peterson has a lot more to say about the trades if he we just invite him to do so.
    I would be happy to see Mike Rowe and Jordan Peterson converse. But I think Matthew B. Crawford would be the perfect conversation partner for Peterson on this topic. He's a brilliant academic capable of airtight, very high level, philosophical argumentation, which, as Crawford demonstrates in his first book, such a topic warrants.
    I guarantee you a 45 minute discussion between Crawford and Peterson posted to RUclips would fill 250,000 of those 6,000,000 jobs within 3 months! Make it happen Ben!

    I've always had the greatest respect for Mike rowe. Being able to show the real side of blue collar jobs while showing for most of the jobs and be learned. Alot of the people he talked to at these jobs have worked at that job for a long peroid, sometimes decades. It showed happy people doing things they loved to do while making a living for their families and loving life. There is power in that show.
    I also miss dirty jobs. I've actually been watching dirty jobs on RUclips lately.

He works for the county managing the redistribution of wealth for $46k per year. His younger brother hated school. went to 6 months at a community college and said screw it and got a job as a laborer for a construction company. He is 30 now and has his own company framing houses. He has a 2500 sq ft house on 5 acres, 15 employees and brings in sales of $5 million per year... His older brother may never be able to buy his own home
