    NOTES:
    Hog farming on a small farm or homestead can be quite simple if you have a good set up. Raising pigs is one of my favorite types of agriculture.

    Love this! I'm raising pigs for the first time this year and I really enjoy them. They're far less work than chickens, though we're getting good success with your methods there, too.

    I think your watering system needs major rework. Carrying water sucks and hurts the body. Like your piglet feeder. And really agree about letting the pigs know who is boss.

    • @tealkerberus748
      @tealkerberus748 6 лет назад

      Richard Bohling Sr I'd be running an extra pipe across, and either straight into their waterer, or at least filling their bucket from a hose attached to it. That system does limit wastage if anything gets broken, and still all you have to do is turn the tap on and off.

      Teal Kerberus 50 gallon food grade plastic drum works best but yes run a new line seeing he raises them every year as buisness.
      Also a lot of people are fermenting thier feed which cuts down on feed cost.
      Just my 2 cents.

    i always mix there feed with warm water to the point it some what watery and runs out of the pails, i let it sit over night, ( just dont fill the pails to full as the feed grows, from day one till kill day, the feed grows and goes farther and they love it, never any dusty feed up there nose, i use a big steel beater, like you would use to mix up plaster on my big right angal 5/8" drill, i find it saves about 30% feed, what is wrong with you guys, you must love carring water, there is not a place on my farm that dont have running water, and hooked to auto waters, weather it is out in the bush, feild, barns, well barns have year round running water every were even at -40..

    • @bovellois
      @bovellois 6 лет назад

      So did I . I was in Manitoba, it was winter so I used warm water and that's all they got in the day, it was plenty. The feed was coated with canola oil so not too dusty, but they much prefer mash.

    The old guy I buy my piglets from hand milks a couple of jerseys every morning and mixes it with the feed. Guess they love it and it gets them growing. I have built some of your chicken tractors. It is a great design. I appreciate all the info. Thanks

      Cow's milk is dangerous to humans and maybe pigs butthen they won't live long anyway. Cow's milk contains xanthine oxidase which helps a calf digest milk but also digests human arteries.

    Have you ever had worm problems? We've been raising pigs the same way for years and this year we lost 2 piglets from what we assume was worms. We purchased from 2 farms and introduced them together which apparently was a mistake. All of the pigs from one farm got very sick and 2 died. We have wormed everyone again but I'm scared to bring in more piglets (which we need to do to replace the losses). We're likely going to move the starter pen entirely, but I'm looking for any other recommendations? I don't want to relive our last week!

    Dad always insisted we add water to the pig's feed. We never questioned why. But he grew, with our labor, some of the best and sought after ham and bacon in the area.

    • @bovellois
      @bovellois 6 лет назад

      True. I raised a batch of pigs for a friend, they were fed mash and housed in an old barn on straw bedding. The slaughterhouse told him the back fat results were better than pigs raised in confinement. If only consumers had any clue what they eat, instead of shopping strictly by price.

    New subscriber here. Do you use regular tap water which in most localities contains fluoride? Fluoride has been known to be a poison since 1893. It destroys enzymes which is not good for us. Human health depends on 5,000 plus named enzymes in the human body plus ten thousand or more un-named enzymes. I saw an ad for Boogie Blues which takes out fluoride and other impurities from a garden hose (provided you don't blast the water out too fast for it to work properly.) Bye.

    John, love it! Out of curiosity, how many solar panels do you have? Did you do it yourself? A little over a year ago I had 45 panels installed. We don't have batteries yet. I will do this in the near future.

    My pigs are definitely the easiest animal on our farm. We have pigs, bottle calves, chickens and rabbits. I have a gravity feeder that holds about 400 lbs and a 200 gallon waterer for the pigs. It's as easy as shaking the feeder and checking the water level.

      No, not at all. In fact, that’s why I got into raising my own animals. Now I know they they live healthy and calm lives. There is only one bad day for animals on the farm, and they never know it’s coming. Healthier animals, healthier people, healthier planet.
