- Raising Pigs In The Woods - Beginners Guide To Forest Raised Pork
Today we are moving a group of our feeder pigs into the woods. These are pigs we are raising to process for meat for retail sale later this year.
Our pastured pigs are being raised in the woods so they have access to a more natural diet of mast, or nuts, from our hardwoods, bugs, grubs, worms and other tasty treats they can find rooting around in the ground.
This environment allows our pigs to live more like a pig in their normal habitat. It helps to stir up the ground, distribute manure and improve our soils.

Any chance you can turn the volume down on the music? It's just so much louder than when you're talking, it blasts my ears out. :)
I'll work on it. Sound is tough to get right on my editing software.
The pigs are going to love it on the hillside
No doubt! They went right to work. Thanks for watching
Started raising pasture pork 2 years ago in Hilo, Hawaii. Best decision I ever made!! One day I would like to check out larger scale farms.

Love to see the piggers in the woods!!! 🐊🦅🇵🇷❤
Thanks. Appreciate y’all watching
I love it your took over ownership of that trailer! 🤪
I’m going to have to start paying child support on it. 🤣🤣
This is a very metaphorical video. Those pigs who thought they “missed the boat” actually had several more hours or days to live
Those pigs moved easy. I remember some weaning that were harder.
Yep. This went amazingly well. Thanks for watching.
Very informative and inspiring! Thank you.
I love watching you guys work the pigs! How long will it take to feed them out? Prayers for you!
Thanks. It takes about 6-7 months to get them to the right weight. Appreciate y’all watching
100% interested in pastured pork day! Sounds like a blast.
Absolutely loved the video!! Do you ever think of growing some things to feed the pigs to offset the feed costs?
Beautiful ground. Can't see the neighbors. Hardwoods. A farm or two. Perfect.
Hi.... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
Awesome video! Fixing to do the same as soon as I find some land in E. TX!
God Bless Y'all!!
Highly educational. Thank you for the video.
Thanks! Appreciate y’all watching
Nice looking pigs!
Thanks 👍
That is a great idea 💡 man those hogs look so much happier than I've ever seen in a pen of some sort . God Bless
Excellent. Very informative 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing

Tractor thru the creek was cool!

Another great video I love those pigs in the woods like that
Thanks. It’s how the good Lord intended them to live. You not interested in a class?🤷♂️ Come in man! 😆

I just started my pig experience. Got a 5 year old gal, Duroc/landrace cross. I have 7.5 acres in the foothills of the Ozarks in northeast Oklahoma. Gonna be working on fencing this coming week, weather permitting. From watching your videos, I'm liking your fencing. Simple. I have the electric wire needed. I have a bit of wooded "pasture" I already have my horse and mini donkey in. It's a start! Right now, she's in a dog pen with some kunes and potbellies. Those little ones are on the market now.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I really appreciate it for sure!!
that's a lot of Pigs
And we've added 17 more since we shot that video. Its a sickness.😆
Interested as well... thanks again

Brand new to raising pigs. Doing tons of research right now. I've watched a few of your videos. Love them.
We are in Central Ohio and have 18 acres of woods. We are hoping to start with 2-3 feeder pigs for ourselves next spring then build from there.
What size should our paddocks be to start? And how many should we use if rotating? Would like to start sufficient but small but allow for expansion.
GOD bless!
Yes. Interested. Roanoke, VA.

Looking good! Will you all be thinning out some of those smaller shrubs and trees and converting that area to more of a silvo pasture?
I have never been around Blue Butt hogs but they look to be pretty docile, friendly and very curious. They are looking good! Am interested to know how long they will take to reach processing weight with amount of feed consumed and how you like the meat in comparison with the meat from the hogs you currently breed. I raised Duroc and Duroc Yorkshire cross for quite a few years and am seriously thinking about starting up again. Am looking at and considering other breeds of pigs and also what makes a good cross with Duroc besides Yorkshire that grows out well in 6 to 7 months. Possibly Tamworth or Berkshire but still looking.
Very interesting concept how long does it take to finish out your pigs in the woods? Thanks for a great show.
Hey, love your content. And I'm interested in the class!
Thanks for watching. Here is info on the class. www.sheratonparkfarms.com/events1/pastured-pig-workshop-2022
Thanks for all the information! How long will you leave that group of pigs on that 1 acre paddock? Do y’all follow the Salatin model that is based off of feed consumption?

Someday my husband and I are going to come out to your property and make one of your workshop/classes. You have been a phenomenal (inadvertant) teacher. We are getting our first pigs soon.
Ps: I love you and Saundra's relationship and how you all tease each other. My hubby and I give each other trouble too. I love seeing that playful love reflected out in the world. 🌍

Jon we aren’t doing a pig class this year. That video is from 2 years ago.

Do wild pigs who aren't trained to wire break your fencing or cause your pigs to be able to escape?
To train them to the electric wire do you just start with a tall fence with the wire on the inside? So there’s 2 barriers to start?
About how high is your electric wire? Those pigs look very content. Thats one beautiful farm, wish i was closer.
Heard you mention watching for infighting when you mix groups, have had that problem, what do you do about it?
How steep of an area can you run pigs on?we have a wooded ridge we would like to run pigs on that declines into a valley. Thank you.
25 or so years ago, Dad decided to raise pigs in part to help fund my going to college. One day while I was off at college, he decided that the boar wasn't performing his job and needed to be replaced. Dad had a F150 that smelled like pigs from two miles away no matter what direction the wind was blowing, and that is what he used to transport pigs to market. This boar, being about twice Dad's size and nearly as angry, didn't like the idea of climbing the ramp. Dad had a gate and had been pushing this boar in the summer sun for longer than he thought he should have, dropped the gate, grabbed a large double headed hammer, looked at the smooth side, shook his head, flipped it around to the waffle headed side, nodded and struck the boar right in the sensitive bits. The boar jumped forward and didn't land on the ramp. If Dad had been slightly less attentive when installing the stock racks, the boar would have been through the back glass and in the cab of the truck!
I'd be interested in coming up for the class.
Got it. Working on a date now.

When will you hopefully have piglets ready? I have another guy I been getting them from but it’s questionable this time if he’s going to have enough. I usually like to get them around the end of March or first of April
The way things are looking I'm afraid its going to be later in the spring. Our breeding hasn't been very "efficient".

Recently we built a Salatin style chicken brooder from the plans in the Polyface Designs Book. We made our brooder 5'x 8' to use available materials. We thought it would be fun to take a look at how others modified their brooders. We would like to do a feature on Salatin brooders in an upcoming video. Can we add snippets of your Salatin brooder video?
the video is due out on wed the 2-23 hope you like it

@@SheratonParkFarms I think my wife would put me on the chopping block if I spent all of Mother's Day away from the house. She won't attend with me.
Man I get it! We’ll be doing a couple more of the Poultry classes over the summer. No worries.
I got permission to attend! At checkout it shows the date as May 15th. Will this be the 8th or the 15th?
Great video, but it would be much better if your audio was better. The audio levels fluctuate too much. The voice audio is low. The music is too loud, and the there is some sort of interference that is causing the video to cut in and out in parts.
Thanks for the feedback. This video is almost 2 years old and we’ve invested in our sound equipment.
Whats the brand of trailer you used to move those pigs?
What keeps the bears from getting into them ? I want to do this but I live in wv and we have lots of bears
