- Roebuck "Pop" Staples was born December 28, 1914 in Winnona, Mississippi. He learned to play the blues at a young age playing guitar and singing in gospel groups.
He took his love of gospel to his children, Mavis, Yvonne, Cleotha and son Pervis and formed the Staple Singers and began a recording career with United Records, moving to Vee Jay and several other labels before joining the legendary Stax label. By this time they had added protest songs to their repertoire of inspirational and contemporary music to acknowledge the civil rights and anti-war sentiments at the time.
Their debut Stax LP was "Be Altitude:Respect Yourself" with "Respect Yourself" issued as the first single became a #12 Pop hit. The second single was "I'll Take You There" and it hit #1 on the Hot100 and the R&B chart where it spent four weeks at the top.
Pop related "We always tried to do material that was inspirational and uplifting in addition to whatever else it was and I guess the DJ's picked up on that. We were accepted for that and even after we started doing material that was not strictly gospel, we've always tried to make music that is affirmative, happy music that makes a positive point. Our aim is to get across a message while we're entertaining people. We want people to enjoy the music, but we also want them to hear the lyrics and hear our message.....love."
That is exactly what is missing in music today...so here is a classic to remind you of the power of music in an extended version like you never heard before.
Nobody could walk a bass better than in this song. The bass line in this song is funky and phenomenal. RIP Staples.
David Hood on bass. Still alive.Davey, little Davey now
Mavis Mavis Staples is still alive @ 85
Mavis Staples just released a new song in 2025 and its BADASS
Love the bass line of I'll Take You There. It carries the entire song. What REAL soul is.
Yep, great bass line, but to be fair, pretty much everinging in this song is perfect

Right here. In Nairobi, Kenya. Reminds me of my father🙏
My hand is up.❤❤❤
Ah, to be in my early 20's again and dance away my Fridays and Saturdays at "Oil Can Harry's" and "Studio One" ! So much fun ! Everything's gone. Soon I will be too !
But you will be in Heaven and be happier you were here!! ❤
This kind of music will never be repeated, what a special time to have been able to grow up with these sounds and voices❤❤🎵🎵
Oh yeah
This is musical gold , treasure it. It never comes around again.
Music of the 70s makes you wonder what the Program Directors/ DJS are thinking nowadays
The frequencies are changed in today's music and it doesn't resonate with our soul music like the 70s and this song here resonates with what it means to be a human
Music of the '70s was just something else. The Hot 100 was so eclectic every week, especially the first half of the decade. Channels like this allow me to revisit my childhood. 👍😎
The 70s i think is almost the best music 🎶 so happy
Revert to my youth, those were glorious days. (and I did not even know it then)
Yes indeed, love it 🥰
Indeed music like these take you back.
Still a joy to listen to
YES INDEED 👍.
The sounds of my childhood. I’m now 65 and this brings back sweet memories ❤🎉.
Back in the Baby-boomers
Me toooo....!!!
Agree bak then it was intergration no segrigation unite dont fight
Hey u smile im here there n evevrywhere
We were part of an extraordinary time for sure ✌ ✌ ♥ ♥
Thank you for "bringing it all back home."
They conquered soul and gospel!!
At the same time, no less!
Ooh weee🌞
The 70',s were a constant blur of shimmying, club hopping dancing outdoors anywhere I felt the boogie. No wonder I was a size 2 during the 70's &80's
We were all skinny, even the bigger people were fit. Me I'm a runt. But this music reminds me of being a free spirit playing with my friends brown, tan, pink, and the four legged ones, didn't matter loved EVERYBODY and not a care in the world.
Much thanks for some of the music I listened to during my young life. THANKS
OMG! What a wicked bass line! Just flowing through the song like honey! ❤
And Mavis, right on top of it with every moan and grunt!
Unbelievably beautiful!
I am young again, even for a few minutes thank you.
❤❤❤
Yes sweet not mud

Straight Up Song Really Makes Me Wanna Move !
Listening in England at 70 yrs of age. Thankfully this is the only music i have known.
This music makes me feel confident that, at my last breath on earth, I will be taken to heaven. I am now 64, I first heard it when I was 18.
One of the first song I learned to play on the bass guitar.
