Alternative history that crosses continents. The weapon is actually based on the Klingon Batleth - which appears in Star trek next generation in the lae 80s early 90s. The Batleth is in turn based on the Bagua deer horn knife - just made two handed. The directors of Star trek clearly knew about wushu as the main Klingon character Worf was shown doing extremely wooden 24 step Taiji a number of times in the series. It's all cultural appropriation gone mad!!! Great video, thank you.
Definitely have seen footage of this weapon floating around on the internet for some years. Immediately it came off to me as a very modern weapon, albeit fascinating... it definitely shares some miao dao movements. At least in master Wu's particular style. In my study of the miao dao that is how I came across this weapon. Nice to see a video shedding a little more light on it. Thanks for sharing what you know.
I think the creation of new weapons and new forms is necessary in order for Chinese Martial Arts to stay 'alive', not dead and static, and as such, I love the Longtou Da Zhadao! All that being said, doesn't it remind you of a Klingon Bat'leth from Star Trek??
Thankyou for this. I own two of them here in the states. I've been doing Kung Fu for 37 years and never saw this weapon until recently and did not know why. But I'm loving learning to use it.
I love it and don’t care when it was created. With more research and practice with it, I’m sure we can come with very efficient ways of using it. The very interesting concept is at can ve used as much as a shield than a weapon. Just this is very interesting to work with. However, I would be very interested in see a “war” version of it with a real blade. As the versions created so far are still more aimed for taolu practice and competition.
Very educational, thank you for sharing! It makes sense that this is a recent invention in Wushu, and I dare say I think a lot of people's conception of what is "real", "authentic" or "traditional" Chinese martial arts are in fact contemporary that are barely hundreds of years old, not thousands of years old as popular myths and misconceptions would have spectators believe 😄
Exactly, and to me new or contemporary doesn't mean it's bad or less worthy of learning it / admiring it. As long as it makes sense, is practical, and true to the concepts of Chinese martial arts, it's all good
I don't like it. It's too heavy and slow to be an effective weapon. I am not against creating new styles and new weapons, but they should be practical. This thing looks like it is from the Star Trek TV show.
Since i saw it for the first time in an old grainy video i became curious about it,but i could not find anything ,not even a name,so i considered it a vatiation of the Water Cutting Shield. I love that you have shown such unknown, peculiar and interesting weapon. There are hundreds that i have seen i would like to see addressed. Most importantly,if one would build one of these with martial intentions, how would one be used as an actual weapon?
Indeed we lack videos of the fighting applications with this weapon. Like many cold weapons, it wouldn't make sense in today's battlefields or street fights, but it would be interesting to see practical applications VS long and short weapons. In my opinion as for the practicality of it, it is mostly similar to how one would use a Miaodao

Okay. This weapon/work of art necessarily NEEDS to be in a movie about the zombie apocalypse!

Thank you very much! Glad you found the video interesting 🙏
Hey that's the weapon in Dynasty Warriors 9

It does !
It's really beautiful

You're welcome! I love to see people training with it. Hope I can get my hands on one as well someday 😁 wish you a great training! 💪

Agree. If you want a weapon to be practical, this one is definitely not made for that. I don't believe it was the intent of the maker anyway.

Yup... total Klingon weapon.
