I don't care how many times I watch one of your sessions, either with Bec or someone else. I always come away with something good. It might be a small nugget or something that really helps me understand the process more, which helps me become a better photographer. I know I speak for a lot of photographers when I say "Thank You and Bec for taking the time to let us watch the process and adapt it to our styles".

Love the videos and the laid-back interaction between you and Bec. You mentioned in this video the issues with using music on RUclips. It would be interesting to see Bec modelling to music and hear how it changes the mood or similar for her during a shoot. Would it be possible to do a RUclips video with Bec wearing an ear bud. Her hair could hide it, and she could rock to her music while you shoot. I thought it might be an interesting concept.

On Sunday I did my first session with several subjects, albeit in a work setting for 'just nice' portraits and some headshots for Slack etc. Still, I have you two to thank for my directing and storytelling without micromanaging every face, gesture and pose.
Going in I knew I can put people at ease but I am not yet great at creating a fun, casual, genuinely smile-inducing atmosphere. At least you gave me the confidence to try and all the stress evaporated after the first set, and all the smiles and laughs followed naturally. Thank you and it will only get better from here.

I think the points dscussed were all valid. Successful studio photography using a model is quite a difficult task, as anyone could put an attractive and experiened model in front of a camera and come up with a few passable shots, even myself who am not in this game. This becomes more evident in true commercial fashion photography when the alliance of the photographer and model has to be able to sell the product.

So here am I, totally engrossed in the philosophy of human interaction, as is being defined by the symbiotic relationship between model and photographer and around 9 min 30 sec I am bombarded with an advertisement trying to sell me piano lessons. They really don't understand these business people do they ? They think creativity is something you find on the moon . I will return to this video again at some point, because the discussion you were having was well worth the time I spent on it. Regards Jake E.

Exactly like Bec said at the end. Cool Cool .One of the first posing tips I learned as to setup pose staring from the feet/shoes and work up to the face/head/eyes. Even if the shot was only head/bust level only. The way the model stands affects the way the face looks. That is why I always want models to wear High Heel shoes even if they are not in the shot. I've had barefoot models stand on toes to improve the pose. High Heel shoes force the model to have a certain look/feel/expression ... Also I try to always crop in camera, sometimes add a tiny bit extra to allow minor crop in Post.

Like 68 here! Love this videos and have incorporated Peter's advice in to my work. I'm talking about being an eye photographer and getting the best out of people. I used ti think that some type of posed photography led to good photos until I put Peter's ideas in to my work and started to look for that 3rd person that is in a photo. No more posed prefabricated shots.... Now am just looking for that look and feel. By the way I was when I was 19 almost an Australian, but my aunt died, which was my sponsor, all the paper work and green light from the counsel was given, she died together with my chance of being in Aus.

Many thanks for this new BTS; posing, color and contrast has been my focus, you will see them expanded, below.
@B: Many thanks for your acute vertical poses. If one day you have spare time, please put sensors if your body (e.g. joints) and capture your movements and poses; then use a square and bevel to play with the points that have been captured; you will probably discover a new dimension of yourself.
@B: I have always wondered why a Model needs to move all the body if only the face had to be captures, many thanks for the explanation.
@B: Could you please tell us examples of moods that can help a Model to build histories? Also, could you please give us examples of histories that Models build in their mind in a photo session?
@P: There is something that I still have in my mind from the previous podcast, when you said that camera lenses have a physical limitation, and the rest is provided by software (in-built in the camera). In this session, it is so different how the photo camera is capturing the face compared with the way the video camera does it. I prefer how the video camera captures the contrasts in the face. From my point of view, the photo camera, in BW, completely neutralizes the expression of the face, the contrast that is provided by the black eyes and the red limps disappear. I think that the BW images of the photo camera is not what the Model is projecting. I would like to know from your point of view, the reason: 1) color vs bw, or 2) video vs photo, or 3) staring/no-staring at the camera. Would you agree with me that each of them (video-color vs photo-bw) provides a completely different perspective of the Model and they send different messages to the viewer? Would you agree with me that the video-color provides more incisive signals to the viewer?
@P: Why would you cut the feet? Each of them defines its own silhouettes, from the heel to the fingers. By cutting the feet you would reduce richness in silhouettes and shapes.

It would be nice doing something away from modeling photography, not just outside of the studio but away from a fashion modeling 'posed' look. Like black & white, medium format with a grainy high contrast film stock, candid street photographs with Bec, having her amongst a slightly blurred hustling impersonal busy crowd going about their business while they not seem to notice Bec who is in focus and is standing out against the crowd not just by being the one in focus but because she seems out of phase with her environment, but not necessarily or particularly out of place as in alien to the environment, only in that its a moment out of phase, or between frames, and its revealing a similar 'out of phase' emotional state in Bec where its a space where she is longing to connect with but can never find it because its 'between the moments or 'frames' of awareness'.
I think that would be neat, if any of that makes any sense at all...

Good video. But that's bullshit about "...listening to a song you've never heard before is not going to give you any emotion". There is stacks of good, emotive, royalty-free music that will grab you the first time. Explore.

Fire department does inspections on our place twice a year, the fire department says we cannot remove these signs, the fire department said that this door is not all legitimate fire escape, the fire department says, because we're big open area with five exits, we abide by the Victorian law, thanks for your concerns.

Somehow, you need to capture her in transition, THATS where you'll be amazed,. Her real person is there. I'd like to suggest that the still shutter in 2024 is masking you from the humanity you seek. OK, you can still do the familiar exercise of moment-to-moment. 4K at 120fps or faster with 10 or 12-bit color might show you what you've been missing. . . . and it's printable. But most importantly, you'll be availed of that which really makes you two work. That is, your insightful communication. She is already trained to the moment. But she's much more than that. What you presently do is edit with the shutter. As you know, our world of photography is changing faster than we can keep up with. Perhaps, "HABIT" keeps us from discovery.
Might I suggest you try to stop trying to capture and focus on creating? Go ahead, and set the light environment to play in. but once you like it, once that sandbox works with the rest of it, and you've decided on the camera's lens' influence, then hit "go" with a motion capture camera and step away from that damned thing. At that point, you can direct, influence, and cajole without the limitations of the halted periods in your sentences.
You guys get the moment's cadence out of the way. Go without the shutter cues and see what might happen. Of course, In post, there will be many more images than you can comprehend. Yes, it's a different way to mine the gold, but I promise you that some unexpected images will blast you in the face. I promise you that you'll come into a much more dynamic creative environment.
I'm just some still photographer of 50+ years. I offer you these ideas for working at no charge, whatsoever. You and your muse seem worthy of my gift in experimentation. I wish you wonderment.
