- The owner of Vauxhall and Citroen has said plans to shut its Luton van-making factory and create an all-electric plant come amid “stringent” UK Government zero-emission targets.
Stellantis announced plans to shut the Luton factory next April, putting more than 1,100 jobs at risk.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said it was a “very difficult day for Luton” following the announcement.
Talk's Jeremy Kyle is joined by founder of Fair Fuel UK, Howard Cox, who says you could "see this closure coming".

Well done kier, the country in bits
The Starmernator is at it again - The UK is falling apart 🤯
Fallen apart!
Fell apart a long time ago,….
WEF agenda
It's ironic, because this is communism at work!!!
First Jaguar commit suicide now Vauxhall are shutting down. I feel so sorry for the workers at both these iconic ( used to be British ) companies. 😪
Don’t forget Ford.
More milk floats, another company bites the dust.
This is the growth Labour promised is it? All those families now dependant on the state. Brilliant, just bloody brilliant. Well done Rachel from accounts!
Net zero = economic suicide
What the hell can you expect when you punish a company by forcing them to produce EV’s the customer doesn’t want and threatening to fine them if the artificial targets are not met.
Keep idiot politicians out of business.
As an ex Vauxhall man very sad but not surprised Peugeot shut their Coventry plant and Ellesmere will be next plus the mad mission of net zero. This is like the coal, steel, farming the mission by our political masters is the real race to make our country third world.
SIGN THE PETITION FOR PR.(ON GOV SITE).
Congratulations starmer, destroying businesses in record time!
If you didn't see this coming you must be in government
Something has to give or there will be hundreds of thousands more out of work & a almost zero car industry to speak of.
Not to mention all the infrastructure that supports it., that will all be gone too.
Great job Labour, !! Well bloody done !!!
Port Talbot, Grangemouth, Luton, where next in the quest for net zero?
Utter bloody foolishness isn’t it.
They will tell the devil he has to put out the fires next
No new drilling licences in the North Sea. trying to kill the farming industry - the list goes on and on. All part of the deliberate systematic destruction of the Uk and it's people, by the anti British labour party.
Starmergeddon replacing well paid jobs with stacking shelves at Tesco.
@ net zero . The gift that just keeps on giving 🤮
Weve had an electric car for 3 years dont ,stick with your petrol or Diesel motors trust me if you only drive round local to you no worries but long distance green cars are crap, you have to know where certain charger ports are on your journey or your screwed and if you think driving a normal car is stressful then an electric car , absolute nightmare!!!
Son hit with a new set of types at 13k !! yep imagine that, very environmentally friendly.l
@@andrearoyd2942 heavy cars I guess, thats not many miles for a new set. My hybrid is not light though, just had new tyres all round and they are not cheap.
Tesla ?
When i had my smart meter installed, ( the one that records intergalactic figures now due governments doing nothing ) I asked the engineer about his electric van, He replied i hope i have enough power to get home, Once in the diesel van i could do three house calls per day, now due to the restrictions of battery power i can only do two calls, I hope i get home.
Vauxhalls at Luton and Dunstable were giants now they have gone, this net zero madness has to be stopped.
Nothing to do with management in Luton 😉
Luton vauxhall were planning this before starmer came into power.
If everyone got an electric car they would just put the price of electric up 500%.
Correct. A lot dont seem to realise that. As soon as something is popular, you pay more for it. Business is out to make money. Thats why hotels cost more in summer season because they know they can get it. Best thing for me is stick to petrol. The less demand may eventually lower prices.
The government is never going to lose those billions in revenue.
Petrol stations will cease to exist as if they deployed chargers there would be huge queues it would be impractical....They are installing chargers at my local supermarket car park and the work has taken months. I asked the contractors how many chargers there would be he said seven....The car park which is for Tesco and Marks has 2130 spaces.
Net Zero should be renamed Year Zero. Because that is where the maniac Miliband is taking us...
Thay don't want you travelling thay want you stuck in your 15 minute city doing what your told
That’s the bottom line .
Yes, they want us all to get electric cars but not use them in reality.
@stephenhaywood5672 Next thing they'll be testing how many times per day you flush the loo!😂😂😂
The problem is there aren't any 15 minute cities, let alone towns and villages.
I am watching Britain, my home, slowly deform and mutate into a communist state in desperate need of a revolt from the hard working public.
If I end up unemployed because my job ends up bankrupt, I will spend everyday looking for another job and until then, protest outside of parliament.
EV's are a dead duck.
Just follow Germany to see what’s coming car plants closing, Bosch to Lay off 6k , biggest steel maker to lay off 11k , it’s all crashing around us in the name of climate change 🙄
Governments have the gall to fine manufactures because the public can't afford or want to buy an ev. Same with air source heat pumps and gas boilers.
Starmer must step down and resign
..... depreciation in value of electric car is mind blowing. Factor that into running costs as well as cost of battery.
They want us totally reliant on electric with the new Government GB energy holding the Keys you wait for energy costs to be state controlled costs will double to fill there Black holes in finance.
Depreciation is massive but there's no cheap, used EVs for let's say 3K.
This is what they want .
In Scotland not one wind turbine turning just outside Glasgow one of the biggest turbine plants in the UK
Blades also made on the Isle of Wight for the last 20+ years, not a single wind turbine there, never has been.
Wind has a low energy density and is erratically intermittent. Wind power is centuries out of date. Wind farms only exist due to massive taxpayer funded subsidies. They make no economic sense. They are a colossal waste of taxpayers money and resources (including coal, oil, copper and rare earth metals) in addition to being a blight on the landscape. Governments should stop wasting taxpayers money and resources on this nonsense.
It’s been like that for a few weeks now , even when the wind did pick up for 2 days , it was too windy and they had to be turned off again 😂
I despair, they dragged that plant back to life building Renault Masters when I went to Luton everyday, now this disgusting government has killed it completely. They probably want it for housing and Hotels next to Luton Airport.
Jaguar next
They’re cross subsidised by Land Rover so I doubt they’ll go bust but they deserve to go bust after that F ing video, rebrand, new logo and decision to go full electric. Full electric vehicles aren’t selling well but hybrids are.
@@adrianbennett3761I love my jags but I totally agree. Total bloody stupidity, suicidal decision, management ,sack the bloody lot of em
@ problem for Jag is that they made no money on XJ, F-Type, E-Pace, F-Pace, I-Pace, XE or XF despite sharing platforms with Land Rover on all the SUVs. Now want to move upmarket, but how many woke w⚓️s will be able to afford cars costing more than £120,000?
@@adrianbennett3761 JLR will shut down UK production and move it to India.
I will be not surprised
1100 jobs - gone.
another 5000 with companies supplying parts and ancillaries. like a stone in a pond it ripples out
Along with Port Talbot steelmakers
Along with the business rates, tax income, vat on the vans, national insurance, while there will be another 11000 on benefits...joke!
It's utter lunacy. Nothing against EVs, but NO WAY will I be TOLD what to buy. Let those who want them, and whose needs they meet, have one by all means- but no way should they be forced on us or even subsidised by us.
In 20 yrs their will be no Petrol or diesel. Furthered the only place you will be able to drive them is on yr drive. Anywhere else will cost a fortune. MOT stations will fail them too and taxed into submission. Grrrh
Don't worry, Labour have said they'll fix the unemployment problem and train young people.
And the band played believe it if you like!
Why the hell anybody lives in London these days or is at the very least not trying to find a way to get out is beyond me.
It’s going to be like old East Germany. The only car available was a Trabant.
So, my daily driver is a 2006, 1.8 honda civic. it gets around 45mpg which is great. It cost me £1000 to buy it, about 6 years ago and its cost me a new set of brake discs and pads in that time and that's it. 4.5 litres of fuel to the gallon. average mileage of 12,000 miles per year is 266 gallons (1210 litres) of fuel per year used. Petrol is currently £1.34 per litre where I live so if I multiply the 1210 litres by £1.34, is £1,621 per year on fuel.
The average cost of even the cheaper end of the electric cars is £26,000 apparently. Which means that I can continue driving my Honda civic for 16 years before I have even spent just the purchase price of the car alone.. never mind the electric cost, the wear on brakes and tyres because they're twice as heavy as an ICE car... so in what world is buying an electric car more economical than a regular ICE car?
Investing in ideology at the expense of a sustainable economy. Idiot government.
Why force manufacturers to make vehicles nobody, apart from wealthy people who never leave London, wants to buy?
Over 19 million people didn't bother to vote at the last election.
How is the non compliance working out?
That's a huge loss for the town.
Best thing for the environment is to keep your old car going for as long as you can your doing massive environmental damage buying a new EV
Dale Vince saying the other day that the wind is always blowing somewhere in uk. Well it wasn't a few weeks ago when for days we were under a blocking high and our over 11000 turbines were giving us 3% of our electricity
Thanks to labour more people out of work because of net zero how many more jobs are going to be lost
They dont care so long as they have their cushy jobs as MPs. Nice heated homes etc.
Net zero employment
Can something not get this government out and end this madness, before the country is totally lost?
When PSA bought Vauxhall I immediately predicted that they would close down all British car plants pretty quickly. They did exactly the same thing when they purchased what was left of the old Rootes Group from Chrysler. This has probably nothing to do with EV’s, Labour governments, or any other left leaning policies, it’s simply the French doing what the French do.
I feel sorry for anyonw born now
Its not looking good at all the way this country is heading. Nobody will be able to afford to live anywhere, there wont be any secure life long jobs.
Then help matters by signing the petition
Starmer AKA The Grim Reaper
And his mate Don Quiote with his windmills .
Man, I used to drive past the Vauxhall factory in Luton on the way to work every morning. The place is huge.
Was huge 😉 when I started there in 1984 the plant was as big as a village
Becouse most who live in london are on. Benifits londistan
A UK government spokesperson said: “While it’s encouraging to see Stellantis investing in the future of its Ellesmere Port plant, we know this will be a concerning time for the families of employees at Luton who may be affected.
THIS IS THE PAULA VENNELLS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC RELATIONS.
Electric cars are ridiculous.Everyone should leave uk
. Getting mad 😢
in Italy there's a company that modifies your diesel car with a kit to turn into a Hybrid car, fully registered and official. All for the same cost of converting to Lpg.
Net zero no matter the costs. Net zero employment
Indeed, they don't care about the impacts and one thing is for sure : they won't go back, no matter the consequences (which will be huge, no question about that)
This has always been on the cards since vauxhall was sold , I totally agree these mandates to 22% sales required is utterly ridiculous, first they force everyone to go electric then they will force pay per mile , instead of pay per mile it should be pay plug to charge and the 500 pound road tax , far easier to implement, no infringement on human and privacy rights , no tracking your every move , just requires a black box built in on the car and telematic online account to top up eg like Tesla plug to charge . So no matter if ev or petrol yhe tax is collected the same and doesn’t bring in road toll
It's called communism.
The perpetual decay of the UK rolls on.
Some say...Britain is clinging onto life, and assisted dying would put us all out of our misery.
They brought in assisted dying in 2020 🥕🥕🥕🥕.
They brought in assisted dying in 2020.
Net zero putting people of jobs
Big business has seen the writing on the wall....The biblical exodus of industry and talent has already started....
GB Energy is under Ed Milliweed with HQ in Aberdeen, with Jurgen Maier as CEO. As the only wind is hot air in WEFminster, doubt if many jobs will be created to cover those lost to oil / gas / coal exploration.
First MG Rover, then Peugeot, then Honda and now Vauxhall. Soon to be Nissan and JLR. 800,000 jobs in the car industry soon to be on Job Centre Plus. 11 million of working age not working, soon to be 15 million
Yes and buy the wind turbines from France.
You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.
Take me to an E.V. car dealer but you will never make me buy one and I don't care how much you discount it.
Direct flights from Pakistan no doubt, straight into Social Housing.
we have a tesla but the only reason for that was for tax purposes, without that we wouldn't have one.
That won't be for long , you will be taxed driving an ev soon .
That's why over 8/10 EV's are company cars - purely for the tax benefits.
Union members lose jobs, not good. And for what? Net Zero vanity.
You will own nothing and be happy.
Funny how the "get britain working white paper" came out today and this happens 🙄
Get Britain Working, but no idea where. Clueless gov.
Is there a plan for recycling electric cars? The battery is the length of the car. No plans for this.
How much energy does the wind farm produce? 7% is it ? and switched off when the winds up cant be stored ?
Petrol is the best now as the speed limit is 20mph in most place so you get 100mpg😂
Stamer 'I will grow the economy' yeah right talks shite every time he opens his mouth
Don't push for work,if there is no work to work on.
Focus on working on a better mind.
Yh Trump is right. Lower the energy cost by drilling or create more nuclear plants. This government of ours is just a joke. You need people to spend and the way you do it by lowering energy cost and tax.
It’s a money laundering scam, follow the money.
Wind turbines today stood still in my area. Nothing. Sun didnt shine today so the solar farm near my mate was redudant. Ooh well it will defo be net zero...smart meters will be remotely switched off at this rate
Not sure how i'm going to pull my 1 ton stump grinder, even worse i got my L200 a year ago and it was expensive. I need to find something else to do, work from my garage somehow.
Ford UK to lay off 1000 of its workers. As they are going to lay off 4000 Europe-wide. The reason is that there are not enough EV chargers in Europe and cheap cars coming from China. This will also affect the supply chains in the UK and Europe. More layoffs. NISSAN to reduce production on the Micro and Note. But will increase the production of qashia. car. What more is to come as the budget bites in.
You said something nasty about Tommy Robinson last week, don't do it again Jezza, he is Luton born and bred, and you have nowhere near as many supporters.
As a Swede, I get the impression that you have a high vehicle tax on cars. in Sweden you pay vehicle tax once a year. my mother pays the equivalent of 145 pounds per year for her old Ford Mondeo from 2001, so here in Sweden. the Swedish government has also lowered the tax on petrol and diesel to the EU's Mini level, as far as I understand, and has lowered the requirement regarding bio-admixture in fuel to 7%, called the reduction obligation
Don’t buy an electric van, that will be the arnswer they are crap anyway.
Diesel/petrol vehicles are built in Luton with the electric vehicles coming in in 2025
I will never buy a ev of any sort ,,
Chinese must be laughing at the European legislation closing down Europe car industry
Is this how starmer gets Britain back to work???
Where will we grow our food if we keep erecting solar farms
It will be imported from Bill gates mega farms
So
How do you get the metals?
How do you get the plastic?
How do you get the battery (lithium)?
How do you get the lubricants?
How do you get the rubber?
How do you bend it all to make a vehicle?
All these things above come from the ground. So how do you get them from the ground; oil products and lots of oil products to make them, that’s how.
We are being ruled by ignorance.
I dont want one of these fire traps.
NEVER WILL
It doesn't make sense now to make cars in the UK. When the government dictates what you can build and what you can't but that isn't what the public can afford then guess what happens. Expect many more to leave the UK, business is not viable here, particularly car manufacturing
The beginning of the end of Vauxhall in the UK?? No demand no EV vans, end of production at Ellesmere Port within years and we'll be left with Opel vehicles only within years!!
if you want it to smell less diesel, there is at least one alternative, for example HVO, it is therefore a renewable diesel that is made from fat, for example animal fat, significantly cleaner diesel and there will be much less soot, also significantly better for the particle filter
In Sweden, it is a long tradition to take engine heater poles in the parking lot outside the apartments, unfortunately. Do you not have that tradition in Great Britain? it's just that you start putting electricity poles in the car parks and then electricians will get jobs anyway
Ellesmere port next
They were destined for closure a few years back bit palms were greased in an unemployment black spot
30% of people can't have a EV as they have no where to charge. Ie terraced housing, flats and people with no off road parking. What the F' do they do.😮
Stela this is in dire trouble in the US due very poor car sales, especially EVs.
Just three years later, Stellantis is struggling, and its troubles lie specifically with its North American business - home to Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler. Critics, including its own dealers, say the company raised prices too high and too fast, and didn't focus enough on making good cars.10
Stellantis' US sales were down 17% through September compared with a year ago, weighed down by big volume losses at the profit generators Ram and Jeep. Once a market leader, Jeep has ceded the more-affordable SUV segments to competitors such as Hyundai, sending its market share down below 10%.
Total debt on the balance sheet as of December 2023 : $32.57 Billion USD. According to Stellantis's latest financial reports the company's total debt is $32.57 Billion USD. A company's total debt is the sum of all current and non-current debts.
I’m currently looking for a new car. Non plug in Hybrid is as far as I would go.
I wasn't even aware that the Vauxhall car brand existed anymore.
You see hardly any on the roads. Main reasons are simply down to image, and the fact people can get far better cars on PCP deals, although they are basically renting a car they will never own. When it used to be just HP, you didn’t see the roads filled with BMW, Mercedes etc because only those on top money or companies could afford to buy them. Too common nowadays but the fact you can get a 1 series for maybe 399 a month for our image obsessed society, Vauxhall doesn’t even get a sniff.
What !😂and were have you been !! Open Your eyes Vauxhall cars driving around everywhere ffs 🤦🏻 😝🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is just the start
Minford the Brexit economist forecast the closure of car plants
Vans are limited by gross weight, so an EV will have less payload capacity!
Universal Basic Income is unavoidable .
Lockdown + furlough was the test run. It makes sense if you want fewer emissions, you'll target commuters. UBI to pay people stay home = less emissions.
In Norway electric car drivers were allowed to drive on the bus line I don't know if it still applies
