I seem to recall the lore was that Red was originally supposed to be the ONLY tallest, and then it turned out Purple was exactly the same height, which created a leadership problem resolved by making them co-leaders.
I can only imagine how Invader Zim would be after it’s second season, how it would take the next series to further develop their characters, what would happen, I’d love to see how Red and Purple’s relationship would have formed.
What i always belived is that the Tallest are actually adult Irken, and Zim and the rest are still just kids, but with adult minds, this seem to be hinted at a few places and Zim origin story strongely supports this.

I feel like red takes care of a lot of the whole computer stuff and purple takes charge of the invaders specifically, like orders them around n what not. His main jobs to control the irkens and reds is to work the computers and technical things
I think it was stated somewhere that red is in charge of all military matters and purple is in charge of publicity, but since they never separate their responsibilities usually fall into each other's decision making.

I was too young to "get it" at the time, but I love how one of the first scenes in this show is a military assigning ceremony that looks like a pop superstar concert or WWE match. Sets the tone for the show perfectly.
I just like to think that they were just lazy aliens from a different race but happened to stumble into zims race and since they happened to look like them they just kinda became their leaders

It's a cartoon so I'm probably overthinking this; but has anyone ever wondered how the Tallest are able to pick things up? Irkens normally have three digits on their hands, the third being the thumb. But whatever those implants are they did to their arms seems to have removed a finger.
I love how the concept of “The Tallest” is a joke in in itself. An advance civilization, where even the dumbest of its kind can still conquer entire planets. Yet its leadership is based on the simple fact that you happen to be born the tallest out of all of them.
