I'd like to remind everyone that Papyrus was supposedly strong enough to impress Undyne, who can suplex boulders for the heck of it.
If this is the WEAKEST the Royal Guard has to offer, then holy crap I don't want to know what Papyrus is like when he is actually trying.
They have a fan made battle called Disbelief Papyrus. it basically shows what would happen if Papyrus was trying.
I’m well aware of Disbelief, and as I said earlier, I don’t want to know what Papyrus is like when he is actually trying. (I couldn’t even get past phase 1)
I really like the change in instruments, it completely changes the tone of the atmosphere! plus, at 0:51, it’s SO good! the little break of tension with the bells and then contrast of guitar is a symphony for the ears! it gives it a much more dramatic and intense feeling when the player is fighting martlet! well done to the artists who made this banger!
You know, during Pacifist, Martlet lets herself on as weak. But during the "justice" route, she is kinda hard. Even this first battle is rather difficult.
Why does this sounds better than the last encounter
Ikr, I like her final Genocide themes but this honestly sounds more like a final boss theme than the actual Genocide final boss theme.

Martlet is like Papyrus, a powerful royal guard way too kind for their own good. Martlet's difference is that she's able to drop that kindness when she needs to.
I wonder how hard Papyrus fight would be if he was like Martlet, if Undyne says he's strong, and she is one of the main bosses in the geno route, i wonder what he would be like.
@@indie_gamer7Seeing how Sans is able to create a decently difficult fight with the same core components (fast-moving attacks, blue attacks, blue soul), probably extremely strong. Even in the base game, he’s strong; his fight is the only one that lets you bypass it entirely if you fail enough times, I’m pretty sure.
If any of this is wrong then sorry that's my bad I haven't played undertale in a while.

Papyrus is the one monster that cotains his true strength the most, this is based on how enemies work... the ones that move the most are the one that are putting in their all... while the ones that move the least are holding back and as you may see in Papyrus' battle sprite... HE'S A GOD DAMN STATUE and he can still control his attacks to the point that he cannot kill you and spell out words AND A GIANT FUCKING BONE... we know that Flowey experimented with resets before... and he may have seen Papyrus actually trying... GOD I wanna see Flowey's face when he got yeeted from The Ruins to New Home and back over and over and over

it's a small detail, but my friend pointed out how martlet is kinda special among undertale characters for recognizing that ur a kid and consciously trying to take it easy on u
so many of the characters in the main game either didn't know that u were a child or didn't care, and even in this game characters like ceroba force u into difficult situations despite them being the adults who are meant to be responsible
martlet saying, as u ATTACK her, "but... you're just a kid" was a really powerful moment for that reason

Martlet is really not to be underestimated. She looks cute and innocent. But she can definitely kick some ass when she's serious like holy hell she's strong.

Martlet is basically a love letter to Undertale AND Deltarune! She somewhat reminds me of Papyrus (especially this theme), has attacks like Jevil and Sans, doesn't die in one hit like Undyne the Undying, and the cleverness of Alphys (knowing to run at the end of the battle)! I LOVE IT!!
Also, she looks a LOT like berdly

This is a pretty interesting fight. Talking with Flowey in Snowdin, he suggests that "you're just acting in self defense". (not that you should ever take him at his word) But then you pick a fight with Martlet, and that completely falls apart. You have to shoot first, several times, while she makes it completely clear that she's just trying to help. Just like Papyrus, she's the point where it becomes impossible to justify a no mercy run. How's that for "justice"?
I love how *offended* this song feels, as though it’s telling you just how much Martlet didn’t want to believe humans were bad, how much you’ve utterly crushed that hope, how much she honestly hates you for it, how much she wants to put you up to her own sense of Justice.
She doesn’t retreat just to save her own feathers, she STALKS you. Secretly still holding onto that shattered hope that humans have good in them. Secretly judging your behavior, until you see her again and she lets you know how vile you’re being.
It feels hypocritical honestly, monsters are in support of and participate in killing humans for their souls and martlet never hated them. Her own mentor murdered a child that fought back after monsters were trying to kill her then has the gull to say humans were cruel and merciless. Clovers retaliation didn’t just come out of the blue.

1. It wouldn’t stop at five. Not only do they want to make it six and seven once asgore got the souls he’d destroy humanity.
2. If 20 attackers killed 10 children, that doesn’t mean it would only justify killing 10 of the attackers. War isn’t equal, it’s whoever overcomes the other. Unfortunately when monsters killed those innocent children they lost their right to be victims to retaliation.

This is the best version of Martlet's theme in my opinion. Even better than her Zenith form themes. Its so powerful, so badass & dramatic.

for Martlet alone, might agree, but Retribution has something more. That song isn't just Martlet fighting, it's the both of them fighting for what they think it's just having both reached their limit. Martlet has fallen down, and Clover has (probably) no items left. The picture of the fight in my head with the song is way more epic than this will ever be.
When I first fought this boss, I was like "Oh God this is hard."
Little did I know, it gets much, MUCH, worse.
Little did I know, this boss is actually the hardest for me now, no clue why. On my first run Ceroba and Zenith Martlet made this look like a total joke, but now I can first-try both of those bosses but not this one???

@@galak-two-ya this same phenomenon happened with me and spamton neo. the first time i beat him it took 3 hours and the normal spamton fight only took a few minutes, but last time i played normal spamton took like 5 attempts and neo was first try.

I love how every final boss has a differently colored battle box. For instance, the Pacifist final boss [insert spoiler here] has a red battle box to show they are truly against the goodness you put forth, while the Neutral final boss [again, the name is a spoiler] has a grey battle box to show your actions have led to a middle ground where it’s kind of your fault you’re being murderized, and the Genocide final boss, Martlet (the one whose soundtrack you’re listening to right now) has a lukewarm-good blue battle box to show she isn’t the enemy of good, she’s just YOUR enemy. Great consistency!
I feel the need to tell you that this isnt martlets final boss theme its for the first encounter so that might still be kind of a spoiler

I believe this song doesn't include the Enemy Retreating motif because it always (excluding Dalv's lack of a genocide theme) appears only when the enemy you're fighting is going to die. Trial by Fury and END OF THE LINE_ both follow this pattern. Martlet survives here though, and therefore Enemy Retreating doesn't appear. This also explains the lack of said motif in Remedy, and its appearance in Retribution.
Maybe the absence of the enemy retreating motif in Dalv's genocide battle (or any change in the soundtrack of said battle) has something to do with the fact that you can do a genocide run without killing him

Reason why you should not trust Martlet:
She's being courteous and giving you the first attack.
To make it fair
Nobody gives credit to this song. "It's about the feeling of the battle" this and "Martlet did as much as she could" that. But why is this song overlooked? You could argue it's because it's just a metal remix of Protocol. But come on, remixes can go a LONG way. This song sounds absolutely amazing and people need to give it more attention.
Not knowing that her running away was the intended end result was actual suffering

She's similar to Papyrus in a way most people don't mention: you fight a much harder version of her as the Final Boss, like how Sans is a harder Papyrus fight.

I think it's because clovers attacks aren't outright savagery, they believe in what they do

You might have forgotten Starlo, who lost the gunfight and one-shot outside battle
Possible reasons for the rest managing to tank a few hits (with spoilers) can be because:
1. Clover not having enough Determination as Frisk (Can be said for Dalv and Martlet)
2. Dalv recognising you being a threat while Toriel thought you were completely innocent
3. Ceroba being a monster that can potentially be stronger than Asgore (Geno Flowey Dialogue)
4. Bullets against Lids
5. Bird the undying
Man, the game is really good at managing canon-like ways to not one-shot opponents; props to the team

Where it feels like we're essentially slicing through entire bodies
We literally see clover spare martlet because he recognizes that SHE holds justice in her.
@@fed3758 I partially agree with this; Clover's motive is mostly because due to them believing that their acts lead to helping humanity (in both Pacifist and Genocide), and it makes sense that in genocide they're killing monsters due to their sense of justice... at least at the beginning.
However Clover gradually becomes more savage and ruthless through the genocide run, with examples including them acting more hostile against Martlet at their encounter in Dunes and attacking robots that have nothing to do with earning EXP (with flowey mentioning this in-game) later on before fighting Axis. It seems clear that after the Martlet fight, Clover's ruthlessness and twisted sense of justice matches the savagery and corrupt feelings of Determination which Genocide Frisk has, with Clover repeatedly shooting Flowey and one-shotting Asgore just like Frisk did after Sans.
So I would say that having a proper motive and the lack of savagery would be a factor up until the Ceroba fight but it's hard to say from that point onwards
And technically axis since the first time you actually hit him and not the pot he gets obliterated

I like the fact that,in geno,martlet(on the first encounter) is the only enemy that don't atacks you immeadiately. She tanks 3 shots before even thinking that clover killed the snowdin people (she's also the only boss that clover spares not only 1 time,but twice)
Martlet on geno be like: "it's the snowdin attack all over again..."

I think enemy retreating isn't in this song because it is the first one where violence isn't justified at all. Every single other boss sort of threatens you at first, and you might be able to justify doing so, however Martlet tanks 3 hits before realising that you're the one who's been attacking everyone in Snowdin, and she only attacks you on the fourth. There is no way to justify what you're doing here, so enemy retreating's motif doesn't play here.

Probably my favourite song in the entire OST. can’t explain why I think it beats my other two favourites (AFTERLIFE and a mothers love, ofc) it’s just a way more powerful Protocol with lots more at stake, and having finished the pacifist ending in one sitting before hearing this song made it hit that much harder, yknow?

@@PhilAndMindthe best healing items you could have are 8 g.b. Bears with 20hp each and you have like 2 hndw pancakes with 16hp as well. All items you won’t need for martlet. For ceroba you can only not use the floral cupcake and maybe the c.m. Thingy with 35hp. Other than that you get more than enough heals. Like 2, 25hp heals, several 20 heals. A lot of 15 heals and even one or two feisty sliders (30hp). However you still won’t need to use the feisty sliders since there are still enough items to fill your inventory. So you can save them for axis. You will only need 3, 30 hp items and you get like 5 gravity granolas in total.
: 1 gunpowder, 3 floral cupcakes, 1 c.m. Cookie, 3 gravity granolas(or other 30hp items)

I think geno Frisk would still have to fight Starlo, Ceroba and Axis. Unless Frisk gets a gun Starlo would last as long as Dalv, Ceroba would take more damage from Frisk than Clover but wouldn't be one shot unless caught of guard (which has a very slim chance of happening) and Axis has that damned lid, though Frisk could potentionally break it with enough hits, leaving Axis vulnerable

This song technically has a double meaning. In this fight, she's trying to apprehend you for your crimes, but she's also apprehensive because she can't imagine a child like you being the dangerous force that's torn its way through the underground. Of course she's nervous!

1:17 is probably my favorite part! Not only is the instrument stellar (the windchime/crystal xylophone or whatever it is), and just overall sounds INCREDIBLE with the nice drums and the off and on electric guitar, but it also gives off that "cold" vibe of both snowdin, and how cold clover is in this route! (sorry if not everything I said was too comprehensible, I am by no means a music expert :) )
