if there is one thing in which that fight could have been better it's definitely the thematic meaning behind each specimen, and the only one that nailed it so hard was mechanical phase. not only is the execution as good as in any other part of the fight, the fact that it's only the neutral route one, makes this so much more... unsettling; flowey having caliber of a revolver in place of his face, as if taunting you for being violent and cruel, as if torturing you with guilt until you give up. AND THIS SONG ENCAPSULATES IT PERFECTLY, the guitars that sound like screaming, screaming of all the souls that flowey has killed, yet subtle grunts that break you up inside feeling like the last moments of those who have fallen by your hand i might be reading too much into this but damn is it the best part of the game by far

Something I noticed: In Cerobas fight and Martlets rematch, you can hear the Enemy Retreating motif in those songs. It’s believed that Enemy Retreating is meant to signify that Clover is trying to justify killing monsters, which is why it’s so upbeat. Ceroba is fighting you because you killed Starlo, so Clover feels in the wrong for killing her. Same with Martlet; She’s fighting you to avenge the monsters you’ve killed overall, and Clover once again feels wrong for killing her. Axis is a different story. Clover sees him as a roadblock at first, nothing but a pointless distraction in her way. But when he apologizes for… well, _that_ incident, there’s nothing holding her back.
