I don't know if swedish or finnish did it first, but melodic death metal took place in there, we had our own band in Finland (Amorphis), and melodic death metal from Sweden was like Entombed, Dissection, In Flames
For me, Insomnium is one of the best bands from Finland ever. Every track, and every album is a masterpiece and the lyrics are very poetic. There's no wrong with that band.
As much as i'd love to believe this as they are our local boys but no, they aren't flawless, they have quite a bit of crappy songs and their live performances more often than not are pretty bad.

Gotta agree, Sweden comes second with bands like Amon Amarth (fucking love them) but i like Insomnium more they have better guitar sound imo. And insomnium has good songs in a greater quantity than Amon Amarth.
If enjoyed this, try "belzebubs - cathedrals of mourning". Its a weird one. Its based in finnish comic series (my all time fav). It also has few insomnium members in it, maybe. No one really knows. And also in that official vid there is familiar looking keyboardist from nightwish. Vid is animated and the real players behind animated ones have never been revealed. Vid is totally hilarious and for a surprise, music is maybe the best melodic death metal there is.
Will always love Insomnium. As a suggestion check out Belzebubs -Cathedrals of Mourning. Some would argue that this mysterious band is actually Insomnium. Vocalist for both sounds identical. Meaning Nille who does the hard vocals/growls on this song.
I've got every insomnium album there is across the dark and Shadow of the dying Sun are some of the best albums they have and obviously their new album Heart Like A Grave is incredible they're first album Halls of the awaiting is a masterpiece also probably my favorite album is one for sorrow it's incredible

Insomnium is such a great band! Not only the music and vocals are awesome but their lyrics are soooooo deep and meaningful! You should take a look at the lyrics. Well, the guys are pretty smart too, Niilo (bass, growl vocal) has a major in history of culture and literature; Vile (guitar, clean vocal) has a Phd in evolutionary ecology, too bad he's now more into research than music...
there are tons of awesome finnish melodeath bands starting with Thy Serpent (called black metal but), Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, Ensiferum, Omnium Gatherum ...
Pale morning star had incredible guitar harmonies as well... Down with the sun as well... Now that I think about it, pretty much all Insomnium songs have great guitar harmonies...LOL You might like Omnium Gatherum as well... same guitarist

my favorite band of all time. as others have said, they really don't have a bad song ever, in over 20 years. I'd definitely recommend checking out something earlier from them, like "The Day It All Came Down" or "Drawn to Black"
Love Insomnium They have become my favorite band after Opeth stopped doing death vocals. I still like Opeth, still see them live when they come by and love all their albums. But Insomnium (followed by Ne Obliviscaris) is my current favorite. I have seen them live 3 times. Every time they have been to Michigan and they are totally amazing live.

I strongly suggest you try out Bloodred Hourglass "The Unfinished Story". This band also has other great songs like "Valkyrie", "Where the sinners crawl", "Waves of black" .
Insomnium holds a very dear place in my soul. My son had been trying to turn me on to them for a year. I say i kove the music, could only understand one line of the growls. Had a very bad family situation, discovered the obvious lyrics( duh?) We have seen them finally, met them and i am the one who acted like a 2 year old. Do yourself a favor...play The Primeval Dark & While We Sleep in succession. Thats the way it is supposed to be. INCREDIBLE!!!!
I don't know whether it's the mix, or your recording volume, but his scrams are a little indistinguishable. They appear - to my ears - to be a little far back behind the guitars.
