Jar Jar IS the most relatable character in Clone Wars series. Face it. If you were dropped in this war, you’d be just like him. Except you wouldn’t get a royal girlfriend
1. Jar Jar's presence demonstrates Qui-Gon's compassion, as he was banished from his home. 2. As a native to Naboo, Jar Jar acts as a guide to the Gungan's for the other protagonists. 3. Padme forming an allegiance with Boss Nass & the Gungans wouldn't have happened had Jar Jar's not befriended her. Jar Jar is not a useless character. He's just grating because his execution was just botched in production and your bias prevents you from seeing what value he does bring to the film. You could write him out with a few tweaks sure, but that's true for most characters in entertainment. One character can have multiple narrative purposes, but splitting them up amongst multiple characters allows for a greater exploration of character dynamics.
I'm way late to the train on this, but I felt like this was worth sharing. When I was a kid, one of my cousins had a statue of Jar Jar in his bedroom when he lived at my grandmothers' place, and throughout my entire childhood I was absolutely terrified to enter his room purely because of Jar Jar. Every time I went into his room I would see the statue and freak out, and it wasn't until I had to sit in front of the statue for a minute "to realize it wasn't going to hurt me" that I wasn't freaked out by it.
@@firekram It was an irrational fear anyways, and sitting in front of the statue did nothing. I just shut up about it and intentionally diverted my eyes.
11:10 which is why it would have been perfect had JarJar secretly been a sith the whole time. His voice causing an innate sense of danger and discomfort? That's prime villain stuff.
@Shasvin Puvanesvaran When I was watching the Snoke scene, I was fully expecting Jar-Jar to come out and say "I see you defeated my puppet... it was worn and old... It'sa Meesa... Jah Jah"
especially to Jedi. his entire persona seems geared towards destabilizing the mind, making it harder to clearly sense the force. his entire mission could have been to lead Qui-Gon Jinn to Anakin and keep their minds destabilized, clouded, so it's harder to sense the larger plot afoot.
I don't think Jar Jar is bad honestly, I've never been bothered by him for whatever reason, the other characters always reacted to him like you'd except and he's a clutz but his heart is in the right place.
In the Clone wars cartoon I also think he's really great. For one he actually fixes the messes he creates and you can really tell he means well. I really like the one where he goes with Mace on a mission. There are some really funny moments with Mace being very technical and Jarjar just seeing what's in front of him.
Idk what it was- but I watched the prequels as a child and I thought JarJar was hilarious. I still have a soft spot for him. Now that I'm older I can see why people wouldn't like him. I compare him to Petrie from Land Before Time... another comic relief character who most people find super annoying- but for some reason I found charming and funny. Good analysis though!
Petrie was annoying in a good way like you would still hang out with them. I liked him as a kid too even though he was cowardly like calm down let them have fun
In my opinion Jar Jar is tragedy disguised as comedy. He's a normal, likely below average person dragged into greater things and unable to cope. He freezes at the sight of danger, isn't very brave, is a little stupid and rather clumsy. While annoying to be around the character is ultimately sympathetic as a put upon soul surrounded by giants. He would have ultimately been happier as a farmer and family man, but events in the galaxy thrust him into positions where he not only didn't know what to do but what help he received while there wasn't help at all. He's a victim with strong morals, but neither the courage nor skill to act upon them. HIs life debt that he follows means he's honourable, his distaste at the state of slaves means he's empathetic, he outright faints when being made a general meaning he's very aware that he's not suited for the tasks thrust upon him and is humble, yet he still remembers his friends as his reaction to Obi and Anakin show that he remembers them fondly despite years passing. A good man, but in the wrong place. If his purpose in the story was to shelter the jedi on his fish hatchery or hide them in his swamp based farm then be rescued by them then he'd be remembered as a somewhat important and silly character but completely inoffensive and even liked. It's that a normal person was thrust into the light beside titans that so many people grew to dislike him despite him very much being just a person and not a living legend.
I think you just explained why I always felt sad seeing the character, even as a child. As someone who grew up a wunderkind, but with major imposter syndrome the whole time... You basically just described how I felt much of my life. Grew up learning about the greats in science and engineering, constantly feeling compared to them since I was on track to being like them... But never feeling like my real skills could ever hold up compared to people like them (which was ridiculous, I was a child/teen, of course I wasnt there yet). Then I failed out at college, after 3.8-3.9 gpa all through K-12... I was just... Burnt out. Lamented never having a normal life, lamented never developing normal social skills, lamented being just clumsy and cringe socially and physically. Things in some ways got worse when I joined the USAF to become a jet engune mechanic, a physically demanding job requiring far better coordination than I ever had. I felt it would be a challenge, like, if I could make it through that career, I would have fixed my personal issues. In some ways those first three years only made it worse. I barely made it through BMT, was thrown into the pacific and worked to death as our tankers were tasked with refueling everything on that side of the planet, much of which was flying real world missions, or intense exercises to try to scare China. The strategic situation makes your contributions feel puny, and your failures 100 times worse. I'm doing a lot better now. I got out, after finally establishing myself as a decent jet engine mechanic, and decent trainer of new airmen. I keep myself healthier than I did before. I actually value work/life balance, striving for simplicity in my day to day life. And at 26, I've been maintaining a 4.0 in a physics degree. ... Doesnt stop me remembering it took me 8 years to get back on track for my goals in life. Right now, Im about where I could have been 8 years ago if I applied myself. I guess part of it is I stopped caring whether I'd wind up in a science textbook someday... I think the pressure just made me fumble a lot. If I ever have kids, I'm not putting them through all that. Jar Jar feels like some kind of fish out of water story (I guess literally, lol), and thats how I felt my entire life. Wherever I go, I've felt like I somehow didnt belong. Probably the most comforting thing was learning this happens to a lot of smart kids. HealthyGamerGG has a whole video on how early burnout is statistically likely to happen to people who are successful academically that early in life. Its because that success often comes at the expense of developing many other required skills and the effort required to maintain that pace is unsustainable. Literally, more normal kids see less setbacks like these in their lives, and so, achieve greater success later in life, as they took a slower and steadier approach to academics.
I think it’s important to remember that George Lucas’ contract included a cut from toy sales, incentivizing him to create characters that could be marketed as toys, hence Ewoks and Jar Jar, but also fan favorites like Boba Fett and Darth Maul. It’s a pretty rare situation, since typically the studio is the rights holder for a film franchise’s merchandising.
Exactly fox studios had such little faith in the original star wars film, they gave away all those rights. One of fox's many terrible mistakes. And toys matter. Look at the WWE or Kamen Rider.
9:11 there's another side to this effect. If something is *too* reliant on these aspects, it wont be cute because its trying to hard. People see right through it. So actually JarJar looking like he does was a step in the right direction, all he needed was a few more kinderschema aspects and he'd be golden.
Can you give example(s) of character(s) who try(s) too hard to be cute and of people who don't buy it? Live action Dumbo™ isn't cute but that's 'cos his eyes are too far appart, not due to too cute.
@@Mecharnie_Dobbs ugh its hard for me to think of a specific example. Charlie from Hazbin Hotelle almost fits the bill, but thats not her whole character, just does that *thing* at certain moments. Hmm the closest I can come up with off the top of my head is Suzy Johnson from Phineas and Ferb.
I read somewhere that Jar Jar was originally conceived as a morally ambiguous bounty-hunter, if that's true, his design makes a lot more sense and one of Lucas and Co. mistakes was to not modify enough of the original design once his personality changed from shady dude to buffoon... also someone on a blog once called Jar Jar "Chewacca donne very wrong"
I never hated Jar-jar. I found him kind of cute and he did have some funny moments. My favorite is when they are in the Skywalker house and he tries to sneakily eat the apples and Qui-Gon catches him without even breaking a sweat.
This is an amazingly well made video and all, and what I'm about to say is literally just making fun of your accent, but I can't get the idea "Stewie Griffin's fursona talks to you about jar jar binks" out of my head. Great video though.
I think it was a mistake to not actually play audio of Jarjar talking because I know using audio from films is pretty iffy, but it would have helped a lot to show how his way of talking is really annoying while you're describing the different aspects of his speech. Outside of that, completely agree with this outside of the ending. It's all well and good to say Jar Jar is meant to teach us to see the humanity in clumsy people... but that only really works if I see him as an actual character. And I don't. Because there's nothing deeper about him that would suggest he's a person, he's just a complete stooge the entire way through the film who never gets any moments of genuine introspection to ground his actions. That's honestly probably the biggest death nail for his character over everything else, that he's annoying but we never see things from his point of view, we only see how he acts and is treated from the outside. And a lot of that comes down to writing, but the directing is also a bit to blame as well.
Ah, so this is where it started. The editing style is a little faster and sometimes sudden (the tv static transitions). I also choose to interpret that background photo as a young Valentino in front of the Director. With the two Chicken Little videos I’ve come to think Valentino sees himself as human, at least in his memories of childhood. Everyone else may not see it that way.
There is another thing that is over looked about Jar Jar and when I realised it Jar Jar became a character I actually like... Without Jar jar the story as a whole is just.... Politics. Without Jar jar you'd have the similar feel to turning the political debates of people trying to become the next president with a few battles which isn't exactly something I personally enjoy seeing. With Jar Jar being there to break the tension it changes the scenes he is in from a slog to something slightly more. Example take the battle between the droids and the Gungan. If Jar Jar wasn't there messing things up it'd be kind of a boring fight. Another example the dinner scene if Jar Jar wasn't there it'd just be talking and talking and talking with nothing really going on. His actions may annoy yes but it makes you feel something then nothing at all.
"Jar jar is the worst character in Star wars cinematic history" Pretty much all of the characters from the sequel trilogy: "allow us to introduce ourselves."
I only ever really liked him the the scene where he tried to eat at the table with his tongue, but was stopped. He could have learned from that, even had it be brought back as a tool in a later scene. Progression for his character and growth from acting like a child would have gone a long way. Give a fandome a character, and someone will make it a wifu. 10:04
After seeing a few "Jar Jar is a Sith" fan theories, even I've convinced myself into accepting it as a personal headcanon that he was actually a Sith Lord all along and he was VERY good at hiding it. (Full disclosure, I'm one of those people who actually likes Jar Jar and the "Star Wars" Prequels.)
Me: Sure there is a lot of homework to do... and the assignment, and the texts for literature class. Brain: Yeah... wanna see a furry analyse Jar Jar Binks for almost 20 minutes? Me: Oh hell yeah
jar jar was meant to be the villain, he fooled everyone! cause their are videos on youtube yearssss ago that shows that jar jar isn't what he appears to be at all and if you think about about it on a scale....when phantom menace came decades back, we all thought it was darth maul
I think the whole twist of jar jar being the master sith lord all along would have worked if he was relatable and acted less silly. Jokes for a character are fine just less of it and more relatable traits would be fine. I wonder if the prequels would have been amazing if the backlash of jar jar didn't happen.
To be fair, I'd have loved if Jar Jar was actually a Sith in disguise. I really like when the "comic relief" character actually reveal itself to be the villain when it's well done. Especially if they do keep some of their hamminess and cheerful persona but twist it in a dark way after the reveal. The result is a "villanous clown" that, as the Joker proved, is one of the most intriguing villain archetype of all times.
Okay, I legitimately had to pause the video on the image of the Ewoks playset and stare at it for ten minutes because I totally forgot we had one when I was very, very small and I was amazed. And when I say small, I mean it was my older brothers and by the time I was old enough to even watch Star Wars, all that was left was one hallowed out tree that we used for other games. Damn.
There's also the fact that the way Jar Jar talks is seen as racist to many people... That was never the intent, but yeah I can understand why people would be upset by it.
I've stumbled upon you only recently (shamefully!) and I'm already loving your content: but I need to ask, what's Gregor Mendel doing in the family portraits to the left at 1:04? °^°
I was like 9 when I saw Episode I. It was my first Star Wars movie and the only thing I liked about it was Jar Jar. I remember being so bored when he wasn't there that I fell asleep, woke up, some people were fighting and I didn't care so I went to bed.
I think the reason why a lot of older folks hate jar jar and we don't as much or at all is because back then movies had higher standards and we are so used to shit in the movie industry that jar jar doesn't seem out of place at all
ok dude i gotta say i found your channel a few days ago and holy wow i realy love the way you make your videos thanks for making me laugh and keep being awesome
@@BuriedEntertainment you sound like someone who could play as wildcard willie in the town of no name if it had a reboot with animals and good acting. pretty cool stuff and nice avatar.
I think there's also an idea of empathy in comedy that people forget about. Jar-Jar was apparently an exile so in theory sympathies would be on his side. But with all of his antic behavior you didn't see someone kindly or well meaning who was a loveable screw-up (which could have worked well with the physical comedy angle where you could feel sympathy for him) but instead someone who seemed to keep failing upwards, and kept succeeding through happenstance instead of any legitimate labors or efforts. He also didn't seem to recognize that he might be a problem for others. The problem is that the relatable parts of Jar-Jar would be more things that were negative in other people that were frustrating or felt like a burden to be around
I like the idea of a lack comedy following a squad of Stormtroopers as they commit warcrimes and wipe out the Gungans, only to end up in stitches over the zany ways in which Gungans do things like try to fight back or fly through the air when hit by grenades.
As an ugly someone with ADHD, I like Jar Jar. Also he's not useless at least, he reveals the Gungans as proud warriors with a grand army and he gives emergency powers to chancellor Palpatine.
Well, Jar Jar does not "give" emergency powers to Palpatine. He proposes it. Afterwards, the senate has VOTED in favor of this concept. This is something, that people often forget. The Senate decided to give the chancellor those powers.
@@Myuutsuu85 Fair enough, that makes more sense obviously, for some reason in my head the senate tied on a vote for or against and Jar Jar (representing Naboo) was the swing vote, heh, fun mental gymnastics the mind will do sometimes
I am so sad about Jar Jar. Because the actor was so, so good at portraying him, but he had so little to work with. And as you kind of touch on in the end bit: it would have been so easy to just add a scene or two or tweak some things and make him a beloved character because over all he isn't a bad character, he was just a unneeded one.
Jar Jar isn't just a comic relief, but he was supposed to be the twist villain, the real problem was that nobody would tell George to give less subtle hints because GODS some are quite hidden.
Just a quick note, Viet Cong is a slur, I know not everyone knows this and just thinks it's what the vietnamese named themselves but it's not. It's a slur created during the Vietnam war to dehumanize the opposing forces. Their real name was the National Liberation Front.
I'm a be honest if only Lucas realized that obi wan's han solo esque humor was enough to carry the humor side of the story(plus some background droid and alien nonsense) things would have been alot better
Someone once made a good point on a jar-jar analysis. Imagine if Yoda kept up that goofy out-of-it facade for three movies before revealing he was a jedi master and going all serious. I'm pretty sure he would have worn down our nerves just as quickly instead of being looked upon fondly as he is now.
Jar Jar has the personality of Fonzie Bear and the same bad comedic timing. He has the same bad luck of Bullwinkle Moose, but sadly none of the sometime memorable one-liners. So yeah he isn't a bad character, but someone who takes time to get to know and understand which sadly isn't the same instant success Hollywood keeps trying to get.
I actually like jar jar he was my favorite star wars character and i think it would have been a great idea if he was used as an antagonist like a spy in the dark side or an asset in the future

"Jar jar is the worst character in Star wars cinematic history"
Pretty much all of the characters from the sequel trilogy: "allow us to introduce ourselves."
If they had just stuck to the plan, he would have been the best twist villain of all time
The later alagator music fits so well with valintenos daper design
I only ever really liked him the the scene where he tried to eat at the table with his tongue, but was stopped. He could have learned from that, even had it be brought back as a tool in a later scene. Progression for his character and growth from acting like a child would have gone a long way.
Give a fandome a character, and someone will make it a wifu. 10:04
let's us all not forget that that fans at the time nearly drove the actor who played jarjar to suicide
I thought that was the child actor they did that to, no? Or was it both actors that experienced that?
im so glad i discovered this channel, i will watch your career with great interest.
7:00 ah the sidekick of the century, truely no betral there
Most underappreciated character ever, fight me.
"Everyone's loves a good sidekick"
*showes hitler and mussolini*
i liked the evil Jar Jar theory sucks they didn't have the balls to do it
After seeing a few "Jar Jar is a Sith" fan theories, even I've convinced myself into accepting it as a personal headcanon that he was actually a Sith Lord all along and he was VERY good at hiding it.
The real dark lord, jar jar bringer of destroction.
Yes he was supposed to be the dark lord. YES DARK JAR JAR
jar jar was meant to be the villain, he fooled everyone! cause their are videos on youtube yearssss ago that shows that jar jar isn't what he appears to be at all and if you think about about it on a scale....when phantom menace came decades back, we all thought it was darth maul
I think the whole twist of jar jar being the master sith lord all along would have worked if he was relatable and acted less silly. Jokes for a character are fine just less of it and more relatable traits would be fine. I wonder if the prequels would have been amazing if the backlash of jar jar didn't happen.
It would have been amazing if jar jar acted in that way to "get attention" from anaking, to get closer to him
To be fair, I'd have loved if Jar Jar was actually a Sith in disguise.
Love the use of "Later Alligator" music, really fits with the "bumbling comic relief character" theme
Damn.
I think than jar jar is a representation of the drunken master style of fighting
Love the use of character archetypes in your meta
YOU SHOWED A SCENE FROM BLACKADDER! YOU ARE A TRUE MAN OF CULTURE!
14:03 that scene alone makes me chuckle and some weird furry with an accent talking over it makes it 10X funnier.
There's also the fact that the way Jar Jar talks is seen as racist to many people... That was never the intent, but yeah I can understand why people would be upset by it.
My God on his throne- that cough soundbite scared me. I had to replay the video to make sure that’s where the sound came from.
Sheesh
I've stumbled upon you only recently (shamefully!) and I'm already loving your content: but I need to ask, what's Gregor Mendel doing in the family portraits to the left at 1:04? °^°
Is this what you actually sound like? It'd be pretty fun to play counter strike with you
I know right his voice is fantastic he should do an audio book
@@greasythegreaser1825 his voice could make it as a reboot wildcard willie from A Town With No Name, he's got the accent he's cool.
@@borizbrzheev8048 omg 😂
Tbh I love jar jar ❤️ he is stupid and pure chaos even when I was little I loved him lol
I was like 9 when I saw Episode I. It was my first Star Wars movie and the only thing I liked about it was Jar Jar. I remember being so bored when he wasn't there that I fell asleep, woke up, some people were fighting and I didn't care so I went to bed.
I didn't hate Jar Jar, though I did think he shoulda maybe evolved more over the films & shows.
This is why him being a sith would have been awesome.
I thought he was cool when I was a kid. I thought he was a dino man. Nowadays, I still love him. Personally, he'll be my favorite character forever.
I don't think Jar Jar Binks compares to the fandom that near drove the actor to suicide.
I never hated him . I always liked him
Of you watch Jackie Chans Drunken Master then Jar Jars battle scene his clumsy failing up looks a lot more intentional
I think the reason why a lot of older folks hate jar jar and we don't as much or at all is because back then movies had higher standards and we are so used to shit in the movie industry that jar jar doesn't seem out of place at all
Valentino’s voice is so calming I just wanna hear it all day
ok dude i gotta say i found your channel a few days ago and holy wow i realy love the way you make your videos thanks for making me laugh and keep being awesome
15:39 Yoo I’m so happy I’m not the only one who remembers JeepersMedia!!! 😌
God damn your content is good. How the hell did I miss finding your channel
such a dramatic opening for friking jar jar
Night of the Rabbit OST as background-music?
take my sub bro :3
Finally, somebody noticed!
@@BuriedEntertainment you sound like someone who could play as wildcard willie in the town of no name if it had a reboot with animals and good acting. pretty cool stuff and nice avatar.
Me, at 4:25 just listening to what was happening:
The background music:
Me: and we will fight, we wiLL FIGHT, FIGHT FOR OUR BOY JACK-
Oh when the red rose, it comes a-marching
Spit in the face of history!
Kinderschema is also sometimes with neotony, having youthful features and such to activate that neuron in our brains to protect and care for something
9:00 I’m sorry but that joke bombed
I like the idea of a lack comedy following a squad of Stormtroopers as they commit warcrimes and wipe out the Gungans, only to end up in stitches over the zany ways in which Gungans do things like try to fight back or fly through the air when hit by grenades.
You forgot to mention that the backlash was so bad that Jarjar's actor thought about killing himself
First place I’ve heard someone actually say that the children who grew up with it were fine with it etc.
They should have leaned into his luck not really being luck like they did in the Clone Wars. Make him like a drunken master.
i grew up watching the prequels and found jar jar hilarious as a kid. comedy is subjective in many ways
Sometimes I feel like a comic relief in my own movie 😔
I was not expecting a spoopy intro
Funny enough I was supposed to be named Jar Jar Binks as my legal name. I just thought that was funny.
But then, SOMETHING happened
_unrelated ca-ching noises_
At least he has character development. I can’t say the same for any of the Disney Star Wars movie characters.
5% of the fun of these videos is hearing your accent. The other 95% is the quality content.
He snuck in lore right off the...
BAT.
People think that jar jar is actually evil
Jar Jar isn't just a comic relief, but he was supposed to be the twist villain, the real problem was that nobody would tell George to give less subtle hints because GODS some are quite hidden.
5:41 But isn't Murdoc like super deep??? especially recently????
Just a quick note, Viet Cong is a slur, I know not everyone knows this and just thinks it's what the vietnamese named themselves but it's not. It's a slur created during the Vietnam war to dehumanize the opposing forces. Their real name was the National Liberation Front.
It's only important because people use this phrase today to describe the Vietnamese people, which I'm sure you can see the problem with that.
finding out from this video that the reason i have trouble connecting with people is because i am jar jar binks
wow finished the video and if i wasn’t so emotionally constipated i’d be crying. neat
Ahhh Valentino has such a sexy voice
I kinda liked Jar Jar when I was a kid
i have
that picture
of jar jar binks as jesus
across my bed
and it is HORRIFYING
I like Jar Jar Binks a lot. Is there something wrong with me???
No.
You pleasantly surprised me.
Disney just gives jar jar his own movie lololol
