My first thoughts.... 'what a lovely solo'. Danny Kirwan used to practice in a youth club in Streatham S.W. London. Fabulous guitarist. Shame we don't hear this kind of passionate musicianship so much nowadays. I for one really miss it. 'It was the blues you gave, when you left us that day'. Peace and Love.
I was fortunate enough to see Danny and Peter playing live several times and they really we’re fantastic however I think you can add dual guitarists of Wishbone Ash - Andy Powell and Ted Turner who came close!
+cat fan54 forget it i have original studio take 3 take jeremy sing peter green guitar john bass mick drum no danny kirwan this studio take i have is one million better than this
Kirwan's gorgeous left hand vibrato was one of a kind. Recognizable anywhere. Related note...I saw them in 1969 at the Sound Factory in Sacramento, their first or second USA tour. Danny was a teenager in jeans, t-shirt and sneakers (like the rest of the group). Green introduced the band by saying "We're a bit nervous, do you mind if we jam a while to loosen up?" Are you kidding? Do we mind? What a dream band for guitar players that line-up was.
I wander is he doing the vibrato moving the string up and down or like violin style... the up and down thing I never could do the violin thing comes natural, but comes out abit quiet on a fender also in the studio version Im not quite sure who plays lead but I think its Kirwan again since the backing guitar the chords sound like Green plays
@@sellmeyoursoul6601 Danny had a fierce sideways vibrato matched by nobody I ever saw. He also did the violin style but usually his wrist would wobble amazingly fast back and forth stretching that string up and back, even on the lower frets. I have tried off and on for years to get that technique down but just can't do it. Clapton said in an interview that it takes years of practice. So my vibrato is mostly violin style like you. Unfortunately most of the video clips of Danny have few shots of his left hand vibrato but there are some out there. A great audio only example is "Like It This Way" from the Men of the World: The Early Years album. Pretty sure Danny is the first guitar. Peter almost matches Danny's vibrato on that great guitar duet. The one live video clip I've seen of that tune has Danny breaking a string early on so not a good example. Another one to check out is Jigsaw Puzzle Blues, a short, beautifully played old style tune that he wrote.
@@NorCalProf1 nice info, its funny I never thought about vibrato, I seem to do it mostly with rotation from the shoulder, I tried the up and down thing it really sounds more pronounced on the strat
Seeing Danny Kirwan brings back lots of memories for me - he was a good friend of one of my cousins - they lived two doors away from each other and used to be my babysitters when I was small
Poor old Danny boy, such a sensitive soul - and there you have the fount of his blues touch. I'd love to know more about Green's thoughts on Kirwan. Not enough has been said. We know the Green story and how we lost one of the greatest and most original rock musicians of all time (the German 'trip' as good as an airplane crash).
The problem is that most people, apparently including you, don't really know the story (no offence intended), partly due to the misinformation in Fleetwood's book. Peter had Schizophrenia and it just rears its ugly head at about the age he was at that time when a person is predisposed to it. Its understandable that people were confused about it at that time as it wasn't very well understood until much later not to mention that its a very traumatic thing to witness and even more so to experience. Its a biological disease and is NOT caused by drugs, they complicated his condition and made it harder to manage but it would have happened whether or not he did acid. The German incident was fairly coincidental and Peter was already struggling with the disease, it just gets progressively worse with time.
@@knawl Yes, so true, plus Peter had those electro shock treatments & meds. that added more problems. I hope he has found his peace now, and is enjoying his retirement💚🎶💞🎶💚
@@knawl so agree. After reading so much and hearing first hand accounts by girlfriends, friends in video and listening to the progression of his music, you can see the slide down. Physically very obvious, in three years he almost looks like a different person. Very sad😢
@@Amy-xw7sd I often wonder if Danny might have had some sort of biologicly based mental illness also, no medical data seems to be available on him but he was definitely depressed and had some episodes of what might be interpreted as manic, notably the incident where he threw a fit and walked off stage after an argument with Welch. From the comments from other Members of Fleetwood about the incident and the decision to fire him, they seemed to say, albeit in a rather cryptic manner, that this sort of behavior on the part of Danny was far too common.
@@knawl So I always wondered how Danny was when Peter , this genius he looked up to? After reading little quips from Peter and Liner notes and such. Deduct ( totally personal opinion) that maybe it was his turn to shine It was said that Danny told Peter he should learn more music theory.. Peter.. I was glamourpussing around too much for all that. And that Peter could play circles around Danny Danny was so young and like many the booze and drugs doesn’t help. On one take of.... can not remember song but girls are clearly in studio and Peter is messing around with them and brings Danny into and you can hear him laugh.. like a little school boy, that he was. By many accounts Fleetwood Mac were wild on stange and I have to assume off. So much of this is telling and a lot for a young man to absorb. Through history many of our creative geniuses have bouts of what we deem mental illness The whole Munich was the end... not buying, just a stop on the journey. Was Danny at commune, variety of stories but I didn’t think so?!
I will say Green and Kirwan were very different when it came to their strengths. Green was amazing at minor key blues (Before the Beginning) and acid rock melded with a blues overtone (Rattlesnake Shake live). Kirwan was at his best writing whimsical numbers like Dragonfly and Although the Sun is Shining. Not saying either of the two couldn't make good efforts at the other, just that those seems to be their strengths.
Peter Green is a legend. Danny Kirwan is great, but he idolized Peter for a reason. Look up the live video version of them playing Rattlesnake Shake together. It's in black and white. That's all you need proof to know Peter Green was on a whole different level than most any guitarist in his prime.
At times it was the other way around. Peter would look at Danny in awe in some photos I've seen. Take a look at that video in that apartment when the two were practicing "One Sunny Day." It was Danny who was leading Peter, including the walk down to the street from the apartment.
@Bluesblaster, Thank you. Of course you are right. I cheched the info on FMLegacy and changed the dates. The uploader of the original bootleg clearly switched the numbers of the months. And yes, it's of course 1969 and not 1970 - a bit sloppy of myself - I certainly was aware of Peter Green's last tourdates;)
He was considered for the stones before they went for Taylor. Now Taylor was great and his solo on Sympathy for the devil in front of Hendrix is stuff of legends but something tells me if Kirwan had joined the stones that band would have been something else. He had a better voice than Jagger too. Could of been his ticket
No way, Dave Walker and Bob Weston together replaced Danny as a singer (Dave Walker) and as a guitar player (Bob Weston) after he sadly got fired. So Dave and Danny on the same picture??? Impossible, but thanks for your involvement. I guess it just has to be Peter after having had a haircut
I think it is Peter Green in the pix. He came back in from time to time for a short period after leaving, think he even did a short bit of their tour as well. I dont think Mc Vie is that tall-Bob Weston also played shortly with this line up.
@Bluesblaster, By the way, I 'borrowed' that picture from someone who posted it on the Ledge. Apparently no one at the moment saw there was something odd with this pic. Unfortunately I am no member.
@MsOndine I presume the guy on the left is John MacVie. And ehm... sign up to the Ledge. We'll meet up there and share our admiration for this band. En er zijn veel mensen die elkaar steunen bij het zoeken naar materiaal en informatie.
Pete Miller And I'm still messed up about it. Danny made such a contribution, with Peter and without! I just wanna hear everything he's on. Great guitarist and singer
That's Peter Green. I assume this was taken when he was convinced to help them finish the American tour after Jeremy Spencer disappeared. There are some songs on youtube search Fleetwood Mac San Bernadino 1971. Peter Green refused to play anything except rhythm.
@Bluesblaster, He doesn't really look like John McVie. At least not to me. But I suppose you're right and I guess it's one of his rawer moments;) I'll send you a pm regarding the ledge....
@Bluesblaster, Yes, I can see what you mean. The picture at 2.19 is indeed mysterious. I think it's Peter. He certalnly doesn't look like Bob Welch or Jeremy Spencer. But if it's a picture of an existing line-up remains the question. It could just be a random meeting between some of the members and ex-members of the band at that moment, on some street (in London?). But there also is the guy on the left with the cigarette. Is this Dave Walker?
..you wouldn't just assume its John mcvie with the ciggy? thought Danny was holding a teddy bear at first glance! this song stops me in my tracks.. thankyou Missy Ondine.. and god bless danny.. i hope at last he is at peace..
At 2:19, who's the guy in the middle? Christine's there. so I'd guess Peter had already gone. That would leave Jeremy as a probability. However, the guy's too tall to be Jeremy. So evidently Jeremy had already left. That would mean it could be Bob Welch. But no way does he look like Bob. Meaning this is Peter???? When he rejoined for completing the tour that Jeremy suddenly quit? Never knew there are pictures of this line-up. Amazing if true. Cheers
@Bluesblaster, I didn't mention P. Green as second guitarist, because I assumed everyone would understand this from the name of this version of the band: (Peter Green's) Fleetwood Mac. Also, only mentioning Peter wouldn't be fair to the rest of the band. And when I mention the whole line-up, it's incorrect, because J, Spencer isn't playing on this one - or in most songs where he wasn't the lead player.
My guess is partial band and partial road crew photo. Someone could ask Danny... it's not like he's dead. Email Jeremy Spence on his site. Ask Peter.......

Detracting from one to raise the other is really unnecessary, particularly where two fine guitarists such as these are concerned; besides which, anyone that knows anything about this band is well aware of Mr Kirwan’s ability.
