I know this video is already 3 years old, but just had to comment anyway. Nothing seems to dampen your spirit Mark. Car's all frosted over... Look at all the amazing patterns. You obviously have a positive perspective on life 😊
Wow! That was fascinating. I'm getting some daphnia for my angels. Love your appreciation for car ice too. Seems a shame to defrost it to go to work. 😀
The African shrimp is brilliant. I just bought 4 bamboo shrimps on the way home from the hospital today Mark how funny is that and they were straight into the shrimps hide. The moss is brilliant Mark 😀👍🏻⭐️⭐️
The elongated larva you found is a corethra larva. A mosquitto larva of the not stinging kind. They are found in the Winter and make excellent food for fish. The Malaria mosguitto larva is quite alike. But greener and are found during summer.
What do you feed the daphnia? When you made the living wall did you use coconut husk fiber mat to attach the plants and mosses to it? Can coconut husk mats be used in this way to make a living wall?
Are you making a acrylic tank?? I have never seen nor knew you could get shrimp that size as a pet! Ha,ha call him Tiny Tim! You have now got me wanting some mountain Minnows ;). Keep it up it's great to watch, I never know what you will do next Love it!
Is it very difficult to keep the daphnia culture going in the glass bowl? Is there an unpleasant odor from the daphnia bowl? I ask because I have bowl about the same size with the same plants and it would be brilliant if I could keep daphnia in it.
Hey Mark I've always enjoyed your videos. I hope you're doing well and you had an amazing Christmas. Hopefully I can be successful with the moina/daphnia eventually
MARK'S AQUATICS oh ok it looked like he was on some different types of substrate lol daft me I have just wanted it again it was the Daphnia you were on about feeding him. I'm still smiling after the other video ☺👍☆☆
Hi Mark, I love the button to turn off the pump for 5 minutes, hate to see my Grindal worms disappearing up the filter inlet when I feed. Did you make it yourself or did you buy it?
hi mark hope this finds you well made a discovery there one a day now😊😊pumpkin left from halloween fed some to micro worms turns them orange and you can see the fry are eating them i use dry potato for food found it the best lasts forever just top it up dry after the first cook pumpkin sits on it lovely done it raw might work quicker boiled for a couple minutes it works another wee tip dont like touching the worms so i use the filtertips from diy cigs to move them about now thats a tip good luck jj
How do daphnia get into standing bodies of water (e.g watering cans that you've left out etc) if no water from a daphnia infested water got transferred into it?
That affect on the back of a fish tank would look brill Man in black or white ! Hows it done please would like to try in black on my 4ft tank upgrade i'm building...maybe a vid for you in the future sir, I like the nut shell with the plant in, Nice way i can put plants in my tank, See i have bare bottom but they hang, and the trees in the jar of another vid of yours, but still can keep bare bottom.
Ok so this stuck to my mind, im thinking of getting a 50-60 liter tank to have a daphnia culture. (ive decided to get some killi fish in the near future, adn also my guppies would probably love these) Do you think its easy to have and keep it going or do i have to restart the culture and so on? The kind i found and easy to get is called daphnia magna, anyway ill read up more of these but maybe you have some answers, or maybe if u want make an update of the litle tank you have either way, you are awesome, getting alot of good tips from you! :)
I never had much luck with keeping daphnia cultures alive, but I used to have a self-sustaining brine shrimp tank outside on the balcony - I would let it evaporate over winter and they came back in the spring when I refilled the salt-crusted tank with water. Had to take it down when the cats decided it was nice to fish around in there...
Yeah, I just used an old tank without aeration etc. but you don't get the numbers you get with a reactor that way. On the other hand it was zero effort, just topping up the tank from time to time.
Hes a handsome one Mark, who doesn’t love a crustation. They have such interesting behaviour. Is he definitely a male? Call him a proper name. What about Ted?
Can you, hypothetically, keep daphnia as pets? I have a 1.5 gallon and I kinda want to keep something small like an aquatic freshwater insect or crustacean.
I got millions of these breeding in about 500ml of water in a pot of salvinia ive been growing, they been feeding off a old piece of wood i put in the pot. I fed some to my tetras this morning and they love them, using a torch to lure them into a group then a pippet to suck them out. Now i've seen this I think I may get a small bowl for them.
Do you have an airline going into the Daphnia jar? If not, do they do ok without it? I am having a go at something similar so I have plants and daphnia in a bowl. The bowl has cycled so I am hoping I can have a good looking source of live food! I currently have an air line going into it but the noise is driving me mad!
where did you get that timer. I use a 24 hour timer, set it for almost 24 hours on. then turn it all the way around when I want the filter to shut off for the next few minutes.
Alfred Newman. He looks deliciou....I mean cute. He's cute. I love water bugs. I just got some pea puffers today ( finally...been wanting them forever) and a few more shrimp. I'm very interested in cultivating daphnia. Where did you get your Daphnia Mark? I have a small pond in the back yard and I'd bet I have some in it. Maybe I'll go daphnia hunting.
It would be Possible.. But, you would have to make a pretty special setup for that. Much easier to section off a tank for breeding scuds or snails. Any that escape their area are eaten.
Hey Mark, I've been trying to decide what kind of live food I should breed for my boraras brigittae. Do you think baby daphnia's filled with spirulina would work? Love your videos!
the larva look like glassworm to me, i feed my outdoor daphnia farm with handful of hay and small amount of horse poop think they would eat spirulina powder well mixed but the infusoria from the hay an poop seems to work fine
I know this video is already 3 years old, but just had to comment anyway. Nothing seems to dampen your spirit Mark. Car's all frosted over... Look at all the amazing patterns. You obviously have a positive perspective on life 😊
I know your comment is 3 years old, but I agree.
Wow! That was fascinating. I'm getting some daphnia for my angels. Love your appreciation for car ice too. Seems a shame to defrost it to go to work. 😀
Best fish education channel 😀
Hi Mark. Nice work! I would like see more about daphia & shrimps. Thank you...
What a nice little relaxation bowl as well. They're just fun to watch!
nice video thanks for sharing
The African shrimp is brilliant. I just bought 4 bamboo shrimps on the way home from the hospital today Mark how funny is that and they were straight into the shrimps hide. The moss is brilliant Mark 😀👍🏻⭐️⭐️
How do you keep that little bowl clean and prevent overpopulation crash of the daphnia?
He just took the fish out and put them in there to show us. (he just bought them)
Prettiest daphnia bowl ever.. Not a breeding tank.
The moss tank is looking good. Hope this experiment is going to be a success
I get the best ideas from your videos
I'm really enjoying watching your vids. I'm glad I subbed.
Nature is beautiful
Sharon Bendtsen indeed!Nature makes such gorgeouis creatures
You’re beautiful
Your videos are great! I just started a culture in a plastic tub in my backyard
Of all the videos, this is the only one where you can really see them, and understand the scale.
that I've come across, at least. Very helpful, thank you
I know you’re calling it a him, but my husband said “Fifi the fan dancer”. Lol!
Hi Mark! Love the African Fan Shrimp!! I have 2 bamboo shrimp and love watching them. I like the names Crusty, Whiskers or Charlie :)
Some cool names there!
These daphnia look ideal for my apistos🙂👍🏻
That vampire shrimp is beautiful! I keep bamboo shrimp and I love them.💚🐠💚
Yes their very interesting little guys.
The elongated larva you found is a corethra larva. A mosquitto larva of the not stinging kind. They are found in the Winter and make excellent food for fish. The Malaria mosguitto larva is quite alike. But greener and are found during summer.
thought it was planaria
Love your videos!
Can you give me more info on the tank setup with the minnows? Do you have a video covering the details?
What do you feed the daphnia? When you made the living wall did you use coconut husk fiber mat to attach the plants and mosses to it? Can coconut husk mats be used in this way to make a living wall?
I feed them spirulina .👍😀
MARK'S AQUATICS in a powderform?
@@abbystevens5693 yes. I use spirulina powder ❤️🇦🇺
Feed them spirulina so they are good and healthy and the spirulina will then be fed to your fishes through these guys
Powder form...?
Any suggestions how to create circulation on a low tech planted tank? Excellent work on the vid!!!!
You could add an air stone.
flipflopsneeded how big is this low tech tank?
30 litres.
you could add a variable speed/flow power head.
Guppy Gal & Tanzie the Ragdoll 10g and found a low circulation pump as advised :). Thx everyone
Very cool!
How did you create the daphnia habitat in the glass bowl? I would love something like this for my classroom!
Fresh water, plants , light, yeast
This is exactly why I watched this video. I expected a step by step set up. Disappointed.
That’s gorgeous ice. being from Southern California I don’t get to witness this to this extent. ❤️it
We get some stunning ice formations .
somehow it reminds me of one of those snow globes. Can't you get em to wear santa clause hats lol
Are you making a acrylic tank?? I have never seen nor knew you could get shrimp that size as a pet! Ha,ha call him Tiny Tim! You have now got me wanting some mountain Minnows ;). Keep it up it's great to watch, I never know what you will do next Love it!
Yep! An acrylic shrimp / fish tank .Really looking forward to this build 👍😀
Love it!!! Cannot wait!!!!!
Love your videos very interesting call him or her lucky

Hi mark have you got any ideas for making an dry LED light for small tank projects al
Hi Al. Im going to doing diy led set up on my next project.
MARK'S AQUATICS oh I ll be waiting for that video as well.I need to nake one for one of diy tanks!
cheers Mark, love the new guy
Loved this and would love to know how you did that switch
The white cloud minnow tank looks awesome!
Will the bamboo shrimps need that coral Mark 👍🏻⭐️⭐️
Thats not coral its a piece of dragon stone.Just put it in there so he can climb up on the top at night when i feed him.
MARK'S AQUATICS oh ok it looked like he was on some different types of substrate lol daft me I have just wanted it again it was the Daphnia you were on about feeding him. I'm still smiling after the other video ☺👍☆☆
I used to have a cameroon, awesome shrimp
Maybe give the big guy a stone roof on three little rocks to hide under? Love your enthusiasm and information. Subbed.
Thanks for watching and subscribing. 😊👍
If I press that, I nock everything off the workbench... haha
Amazing videos, keep them coming!
Hi mark nice video Intersting,is there any moss I can collect to grow in my tank I live in Manchester?
Hi Mark, I love the button to turn off the pump for 5 minutes, hate to see my Grindal worms disappearing up the filter inlet when I feed. Did you make it yourself or did you buy it?
I made that one.😀👍
Love what you got going on there. I would like to know where does one get the volcanic gravel ? Thank you for your time 👍...
Hi Juan. the volcanic gravel is made buy a company called JBL its great stuff.
Nice pickup I have a few bamboo shrimp that looks similar to this one what kind of substrate is he on
I've been after a giant african fan shrimp for some time. got one at last..
MARK'S AQUATICS Congrats Mark yes mine are about 4-5" and they were labeled Bamboo shrimp and they feed the same way yours do
How did I miss this video, that shrimp is adorable

What is the name of your plant? It’s beautiful!
Oh oh.... tell me about those floating walnuts please? Did you make them??? how do you make them???
I did a vido on how to make them. Look through my playlists 😀👍
@@MARKSAQUATICS thanks
What did they turn into?
I’ve commented this on another vid.. but have you seen biopod? Would love to see a diy version
I plan on building one shortly. 👍😀
Mark did you build that power-kill timer? I'd like to have one of those.
I think you should call him Larry! I know hes not a lobster but i think thats a pretty funny name lol!
I like Larry 👍😀
I love these shrimps
Whow! Love your video!
How do daphnia get into standing bodies of water (e.g watering cans that you've left out etc) if no water from a daphnia infested water got transferred into it?
😊👍
Filter feeders are so interesting!
leave the shells in after he sheds them. They need to eat the shells for the nutrition in them just like the lobsters ,crayfish and shrimp.
Congrats on 2016 subs!!
Thank you!! I can't believe we got there so fast.
That affect on the back of a fish tank would look brill Man in black or white ! Its opaque acrylic sheet . You can get it in all different colours .
Bit late but Jaba for all those Star Wars enthusiasts! 🤣
How is your daphnia tank set up? What kind of plants are in there?
Cheryl Elsberry Hi. They die off in the winter. I normally start a new tank in the summer . I think the plants were anubias.
Ok so this stuck to my mind, im thinking of getting a 50-60 liter tank to have a daphnia culture. Love you videos, What is that moss you got growing in your Minnow tank?
It's actually land moss I was trying an experiment to see if it would grow submerged.
@@MARKSAQUATICS Thanks Mark, have you injected CO2 into that setup?
How do you deal with the water since the daphnia are so small
I've got a very fine micron mesh sieve and do the water changes through that then return them to the bowl.
Marc are you gonna give this African big shrimp a partner and try to breed them?
Hi. Sadly he died a couple of weeks ago.
Nice video.
Can u tell me where I can find this Timer Box that u are using for your pump?!? I also need some of those :D
Hi. I made the timer box 😀👍
Really nice job!
Brine shrimp are great fun to breed. I must make a reactor and hatch some for the cloud minnows.👍😀
Yeah, I just used an old tank without aeration etc. but you don't get the numbers you get with a reactor that way. On the other hand it was zero effort, just topping up the tank from time to time.
Hey Mark do you remember sea monkeys? Excellent video brother 👍
Yes, but. Brine shrimp are cooler little creatures. Also known as sea monkeys ❤️🇦🇺
Mark would u sell some of your culled shrimp
Hey Coop! He is in Wales not the US. I wish he was in the US he is a great guy and a master fish and shrimp keeper.
Cape Cod Tropical Fish Keeper Ok thanks buddy yeah he's a cool dude
Miss your updates Mark. Hope you’re doing okay?
I'm back 😉👍
morning Mark,,,
😀Good morning.
Do I need a starter culture if so where can I purchase them at
You can get starter packs on ebay. 👍😀
MARK'S AQUATICS duh! Stupid me eBay has everything thanks Mark
Hi Janet. No need for an air stone they don't need it. Add very small amounts of yeast to feed them ok.
Thanks Mark, Do I need to dissolve the yeast and make the water cloudy? It sounds like not - just sprinkle a small amount on the surface?
where did you get that timer. I use a 24 hour timer, set it for almost 24 hours on. then turn it all the way around when I want the filter to shut off for the next few minutes.
I built that timer. 😊👍
Alfred Newman. He looks deliciou....I mean cute. He's cute. I love water bugs. I just got some pea puffers today ( finally...been wanting them forever) and a few more shrimp. How do you do waterchanges without loosing the daphnia?
Hi. I put an air stone on the airline and siphon the water out living them behind as the stone act's as a filter.
Do I see 3 walnut shells in there?
You sure did 😀👍
Where did you buy the eggs from??
You can buy bags of live daphnia from your local fish store.
I know daphnia are sensitive, but is it possible that the ones that hide in the plants, breed and become self sustaining for the fish and themselves?
The fish will always find them before they reproduce. Best to breed them in a bucket separately.
It would be Possible.. But, you would have to make a pretty special setup for that.
Much easier to section off a tank for breeding scuds or snails. Any that escape their area are eaten.
Hi mr M where can i find this daphnia SOUTH AFRICA
Is that shrimp edible?
Your unknown larva is a glassworm, the larva of a midge fly
So for the daphnia you just sprinkle a little bit of yeast on top instead of making you yeast soup
Hey Mark, I've been trying to decide what kind of live food I should breed for my boraras brigittae. Do you think baby daphnia's filled with spirulina would work? Love your videos!
Yes they will work. Only tiny ones tho.😀👍
I love ice pattions
the larva look like glassworm to me, i feed my outdoor daphnia farm with handful of hay and small amount of horse poop think they would eat spirulina powder well mixed but the infusoria from the hay an poop seems to work fine

ever had success with hatchet fish?
I'm bringing some on now and plan to breed them at some point.
@@MARKSAQUATICS Thank you. Good luck. I am trying as well.
Does it matter which video I comment on to enter?
Hi . comment on the give away video for a chance to win ok.👍😀
MARK'S AQUATICS okay, thanks for the quick reply 😁
yes to daphnia
I think a small net would work better :)
At 12:52 into your video: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s a bomb
The long ones I hope aren't dragonfly larva. They like to eat the lil animals
Hi. There glass worm larvae.
what the name of the plants
That larvae eats your daphnia. So I learnt.
