Obfuscation techniques have been proposed as a way to provide privacy protection. Obfuscation strategies include the perturbation or generalization of data, and the automatic generation of fake data. In this lecture we will introduce the concept of obfuscation, explain how it can be formalized, and review existing proposals to use it as a way to preserve privacy in location based services and in web search.
