  • In this video I make a billet of 180 layer twist damascus and then forge an 8” chef knife out of it. The handle is made with black micarta and white G10 liners, and has (6) 3mm stainless steel handle pins.
    Do what you love, and call it work! Thanks for watching!

      Lol, thanks for watching! Woodworking is one of the gateways to knife making. Maybe just grab an anvil if you ever see one at an estate sale or something 😜

    Why not fit up the scales before etching the blade, so that you can see the pattern all around the tang?

    • @DavidMoonForge
      @DavidMoonForge  18 дней назад +1

      I do it that way sometimes too. I think shaping the handle once it's glued up generally gives a more seamless feel. I agree with you that shaping before glue up has a nice look to it when you can see the pattern down the entire spine and tang.

    Seeet looking knife! Do you re-etch the blade after you shape the handle to reveal the pattern on the spine and handle area or do you leave it? I use gun blueing to darken the spine or I coat the handle with wax and etch last.

    • @DavidMoonForge
      @DavidMoonForge  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, thanks for watching. I left the spine and handle without re-etching on this knife, but I've done both before. I think I prefer re-etching though, so you can see the pattern throughout the whole spine and handle.

    Turned out great!!! What kind of a press do you have? Is it homemade or did you buy it somewhere? It looks like it’s plenty capable while also having a smaller footprint!? Thanks for the video!

    • @DavidMoonForge
      @DavidMoonForge  9 месяцев назад

      It's a 12-ton press from Coal Iron Works. It's a great press for the size and cost. The die surface is relatively small, but that's part of what makes it feel like it has more power than it does. I think at some point I'll upgrade to the 16-ton or the 25-ton, but I'm ultimately really happy with the purchase. If you are a hobby maker or just have a small workspace this press is perfect.

      Yeah, I finally cut out music altogether and just do voiceovers in my recent videos. I think that style seems to work out better for the viewer.
