  • Jump on a boat and go to the Amazing Key West snorkeling reef to snorkel (And GoPro) in Paradise (Sand Key Lighthouse Reef), which is loaded with hundreds of fish and beautiful coral. This reef is located 6 Nautical miles south west of Key West and is home to hundreds of species of fish to include Barracuda, Sharks, Parrotfish, Blue Tangs, Angelfish, and many more. Sand Key is the top reef to snorkel from Key West and a number of local tour boats head there every day such as the Fury Water Adventures and Sebago catamarans. Video was shot with the latest Go Pro Hero 7 Black cameras. There are also plenty of divers that do SCUBA on the reef as well, but it is just as accessible snorkeling

Love it - we are a family of 4 coming to KW. Who can you recommend to take us there?

There are two large catamaran companies that go out to the reef at least twice a day. They are the Fury and Sebago companies and they are reasonably priced, but do take large groups. Both are good companies.

Hi, i just wanted to mention that the best snorkeling is when the winds are low, which is normally between May to September. Higher winds effect the clarity of the water.
There is also another great location that is only 20 miles north of key Weat that always has large Goliath group and often some reef sharks. It’s called Looe Key. You can drive north from key west on Highway 1 to Looe Key Dive Center and they offer tours our to snorkel or dive. It’s only 10-20 feet, so snorkeling is great.
I’ve taken my family out many times and they love it. Here’s our video we shot there:

Hi, there are many of the local boats that have excursions out to sand key reef. The two largest companies are Sebago and Fury who each own a number of large catamarans that go to sand key a few times a day. Both companies have websites if you google key west and their name. Both are good companies. They do take larger groups 35-50. If you are looking for a smaller boat, reply back and I’ll ask around for a good smaller company. Normally the catamarans would have a cheaper price because more people are going together while a smaller boat would likely have a slightly higher price.
It’s a terrific place. One more note, to get the clarity of water I had you need to go on a calm day with low winds. Windy days tend to stir up the water, so I would find the company you want and probably book once you get here and look at the weather forecast.
      Good luck!!

There is another awesome snorkeling reef here, which I just went to. It’s called Looe Key. We saw 4 reef sharks and a Goliath grouper, which was awesome. If you’re in town I would also go to Looe Key. There is a place that takes snorkeled out called Looe Key Dive Center, which is located 26 miles north of key west. There website is diveflakeys.com
I’m making a video to show Looe Key but it’ll take me another week to finish editing.

We are in the Keys , Never snorkeled, would you suggest alligator key or sand key lighthouse?

I think sand key light house is terrific. I also really like Looe Key. We made a video for Looe Key also. I think the title is swimming with sharks.
I’ve never been to alligator key yet so I can’t comment on that one, but the other two are terrific. Try to go on a day when the wind is lower (6-8 knots) if possible.
Also, it’s best to go to the reefs when it’s been low winds for a few days, which increases the visibility.
I hope you have a great time!

Would you recommend sombrero reef in middle keys or sand key light house?

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  3 года назад +2

Hi, I haven’t been to sombrero key before, but The reefs I can recommend are:
John Pennekamp Coral Reef in Key Largo (northern most key)
Looe Key Reef - you can get on a snorkel boat from Looe Key Dive Center. They’re located at mile marker and 27.5, which is 27.5 miles north of key west. It’s located on Ramrod key.
Sand key lighthouse reef in key west (the Fury and Sebago catamaran companies go there snd two other reefs that are very close: eastern dry rocks and rock key reef.
These are all terrific locations with lots of sea life. They’re all relatively shallow too ranging from 5 to 20 feet at the maximum.
      I hope this was helpful!
