"your pen will smell like sweat" This actually is the case with my Homo Sapiens. It started smelling like a real H.sapien in a year...
Just received mine, but it came with the 18k gold nib. I loved the way it writes, but, as I've never tried the palladium one, it would be great to see a review from you of this very new nib.
So pleased you reviewed the bronze version, it's been my favorite pen for quite some time now. I have found with my HS that the pen starts to a run a little dry when its down to about 10-20% ink. So I know when its getting low and I refill it, so the lack of ink windows hasn't been a problem for me. However I can see for some users how it would be a problem.
Excellent video as always, keep up the great work! You're a massive asset to the FP community :)
Check out a channel called "writerly witterings". The guy is an author and Visconti actually made him a Homo sapiens with an ink window.
Mine, the basaltic lava 'bronze' has been faithful for the last 11 years. I can't fault it. I write without the cap posted; the Homo Sapiens is heavy enough. I use their Traveler inkwell, and this pen can write a whole day without refilling. I have fairly large handwriting, but this pen will ably fill 50 pages of foolscap and *still* keep on writing!
Its basaltic lava barrel and cap is exceedingly tough. Not even one scratch is on my pen and I have given it some pretty hard use. I particularly love the small turn of the cap to detach from the body and yet, the cap stays well on. Yes, the lava is porous, not for everyone except its nib is not solid gold or silver, but 23 karat palladium, (not vanadium which I mistakenly mentioned on a previous video) highlighted in yellow and silver metallic paint, which, if I remember is gold. The nib on mine is Broad, perfect for my handwriting though you can buy a double-Broad. But I love the flexibility of this nib!
Thank you so much for reviewing this pen. Happy days.
I would much later have the London Fog model , and I agree the lack of an ink window would drive me mad Thanks Dr Brown
matthew Beddow Did u get the london fog pen and if u did, where did u get it from, am hunting for one😎
I bought this today, such an amazing pen. The volcanic ash makes holding it during long periods of writing, very comfortable.
Probably my favourite version of the Homo Sapiens!
Thank you, Stephen. I hope that you are over your cold by now.
Great review as always. This is my dream pen, I will get it one day! Have a great day :)
very nice review SBRE! it is an amazing looking pen and design! however if you try medium or fine it won't write, such a pitty. Finally you point out the issues with quality control at Visconti. Hello! Mr. Del Vechio do you watch this? please improve the QC!
I actually am considering putting mine up for sale.
I'm curious as to where you find your Opera Masters. Like you, I adore the model, but I find it quite hard to find them especially older finishes. I've seen some on ebay, but buying a pen that expensive on ebay has never struck me as the best idea.
I have this pen but have a couple of problems with it. If you're unfortunate enough to drop it on, say your desk, and it lands on the lid, then it will come off leaving the nib exposed to the rest of the bouncing around. I also have an issue where there is always ink around the end of the barrel or even on the inside of the lid.
It is very comfortable and writes really well though.
Jim181059. I have two of these pens. Never had an issue with it. Send it back to Visconti. Am sure they will take care of you.
visconti made different types of power-filling-systems. the HomoSapien system is different to the Operas. Long time ago on the Visconti Homepage you can download how-to-fill pdf shemas where you can look for the differents.
I’ve found using the Visconti Travelling Inkwell solves a lot of the issues regarding the lack of a window AND the “staining” when filling, the ink contact is minimised.
It's a nice pen to have just for the material. The Crystal model with the ink window in the middle of the pen loses the cool factor of the look.
That Opera Master looks EXPLICITLY beautiful. I marveled at that pen more than the HS, and I think the HS is a cool looking pen.
I have this pen it's a single camber power filler. so just fill once and use till ink is finished
Love this pen- so very annoying thought that the first half of a letter is never there due to the start issue.
The power filler looks like it's out of a TWSBI Vac 700.
I spent a good month trying to figure out if this is a dual resevoir. ended up contacting dante del veccio and he said it's not. mine writes until it's out of ink without opening the end cap. I don't wanna sound like a no it all but I recall goulet telling me it wasn't also
This is the experience I have with mine as well. Opening the end cap when it runs dry doesn't give me any more ink. I can understand why they did that; a dual reservoir system would be confusing to a lot of customers if it was hidden behind an opaque material.
I thought it was a dual for months after I had it. but it was not acting like my other ones with the dual resevoir system. I really enjoy this pen though, and there's a guy who had a one off made with an ink window on here somewhere that's really cool!
Rotring used a similar lava resin on some pens a while ago.
Single reservoir, alas.
Do you think the lack of a ink window could have something to do with the lava material that the pen is made out of?
Any thoughts/comments you can share regarding reliability of Visconti in general and/or customer service? This is a tempting -- but not inexpensive -- pen.
13noman1 Reliability of nibs is inconsistent but customer service is good in my experience

yes it does look hideous with a ink window.. reminds me of Winnie the pooh with a crop top (idk why that came to mind)
Not having an ink window puts me off, Thanks for the review
Do you have proof that it stains after absorbing ink? I have asked this question in multiple forums and no one can give me proof. Only a hypothesis due to the hydroscopic nature of the material.
Robert Humphrey it rubs off with a wet tissue on the inks I've used
I have both the steel and bronze age oversize. I use all sorts of inks from noodlers, pilot, Faber Castell, etc... I wipe off the section when I fill them and I have absolutely no staining.
I Just bought my Bronze oversize, and i got Stain, and i'm trying to find a way to remove it. the ink i use is from Visconti.
陈潇寒 did the stain come off?
I own one and wipe it off after filling but can confirm having personally (in the flesh so to speak not just a .jpg) seen and held one model dark age with staining up until the mid point of the neck.
I am returning my visconti divina metropolitan (the first one had an unusable nib and ink was getting trapped between the metal sleeve in the grip and the translucent celluloid, the second wrote perfectly but ink was still getting trapped in an unsightly, uncleanable location, essentially making the pen unusable as that grip section would eventually turn black/brown and scummy underneath) and am really interested in the homo sapiens maxi, particularly the bronze age, in fine. Would you say it's worth the money? I really loved the midi dreamtouch in the divina metro, I thought it was one of the best nibs I've ever used (I had a fine and would definitely order that size again) I've got a TWSBI VAC700R and do really like the vacuum fill and do not mind the rear end being left unscrewed to write with.
Colin Martin To me, it would be worth it.
Colin Martin. I second that. I like the pen sooo much. I bought two. One in Medium and one in broad. They are eye catching and amazing to write with.
Are you talking about the homo sapiens or the Divina Midi?
Colin Martin. Homo Sapien. The question was. Is the Homo Sapien worth the price?
こんにちは♪・Hello ♪ · Visconti over and DuPont is a great couple. I also use it.
Not a double reservoir system pen.
7:05: Magnification will show you the pitting because lava is a porous material.
Do you still have this pen? If not, why?
No, I sold it
If the previous owner told you the pen had issues, then you are reviewing a pen that you knew to be faulty to begin with.
