Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: 6 construction workers presumed dead

- At least six people are presumed to be dead after a cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday, causing it to collapse.
Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said Tuesday a crew of construction workers were working in the middle span of the bridge when it collapsed. At least six are thought to be dead because of how deep the water is and because of how long it's been since the collapse without rescued victims.
Police said two members of the construction crew had been rescued as of 6:30 a.m. ET. One refused treatment and was unharmed. Another was in serious condition and transported to a local trauma center.
Emergency crews are still searching for victims in the Patapsco River.
The ship's collision into one of the supports sent the bridge plummeting into the water below within seconds.
Baltimore police said they were notified of the bridge collapse at approximately 1:40 a.m. Tuesday. They received emergency calls of "multiple people in the water.” During an interview with Scripps News, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said there were dive teams from multiple agencies with approximately 50 divers searching the river.
Sonar technology was able to detect what officials believe to be three passenger vehicles and a cement truck in the water. A fifth vehicle was noted, but it is unclear what type it is at this time, Wallace said.
However, during a 9:30 a.m. ET press conference, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said officials were able to stop traffic on the bridge after receiving a mayday distress from the ship, so it's unclear how many vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
Officials said recovering any people in the water remains a top priority, but conditions for rescuers are risky with debris hanging from the bridge and the water temperature at around 47 degrees.
The exact number of victims is still unknown.

What about the missing people. The bridge is irrelevant
It's obvious to anyone that that ship that hit the bridge was not steering for the middle of the opening under the bridge. Why were they so close to that bridge support. 8 knots is too fast inside of that waterway. In the short distance to that bridge from where the ship pulled out should have had a tug boat

This would not have happened if this was a US flaged vessel. I believe that they did not line up correctly. I think there could have been a language barrier or problem between the quartermaster and the pilot. Nobody was checking to see what the quartermaster was doing and I believe he got off course and he tried to get back on course but it was too late
