  • Dragonflies might rule the skies, but their babies grow up underwater in a larva-eat-larva world. Luckily for them, they have a killer lip that snatches prey, Alien-style, at lightning speed.

    If adult dragonflies are known to be precise hunters, capable of turning on a dime and using their almost-360-degree vision to nab mosquitoes and flies in midair, their dragon-looking babies are even more fearsome.
    Dragonflies and damselflies lay their eggs in water. After they hatch, their larvae, also known as nymphs, spend months or years underwater growing wings on their backs.
    Without those versatile four wings that adults use to chase down prey, nymphs rely on a mouthpart they shoot out. It’s like a long, hinged arm that they keep folded under their head and it’s eerily similar to the snapping tongue-like protuberance the alien shoots out at Ripley in the sci-fi movie Aliens.
    A nymph’s eyesight is almost as precise as an adult dragonfly’s and when they spot something they want to eat, they extrude this mouthpart, called a labium, to engulf, grab, or impale their next meal and draw it back to their mouth. Only dragonfly and damselfly nymphs have this special mouthpart.
    “It’s like a built-in spear gun,” said Kathy Biggs, the author of guides to the dragonflies of California and the greater Southwest.
    With their labium, nymphs can catch mosquito larvae, worms and even small fish and tadpoles.
    “It’s obviously an adaptation to be a predator underwater, where it’s not easy to trap things,” said Dennis Paulson, a dragonfly biologist retired from the University of Puget Sound.
    Also known among biologists as a “killer lip,” the labium comes in two versions. There’s the spork-shaped labium that scoops up prey, and a flat one with a pair of pincers on the end that can grab or impale aquatic insects.
    -- How many years have dragonflies been around?
    Dragonflies have been around for 320 million years, said Ed Jarzembowski, who studies fossil dragonflies at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology. That means they were here before the dinosaurs.
    -- How big did dragonflies used to be?
    Prehistoric dragonflies had a wingspan of 0.7 meters (almost 28 inches). That’s the wingspan of a small hawk today.

      How does the videographer get such a wide depth of field for such magnified macro shots without cranking the aperture to f/30 or higher. Also how do he/she maintain such perfect focus on the moving creatures and stay locked on because it's almost like looking through a small microscope. I have a 1:1 macro lens but it could not come close to these videos close up and tracking the moving insects. I would love to know in more detail like behind the scenes like the type of lens and the technical terms for photographers. Amazing videos. Thanks!

    I wonder if it's possible to buy dragonfly eggs and put them in every water spot in the summer in order to eat mosquitos larva. This could be a natural way to deal with them without extra damages.

      Hi DrBLOOD. I produced this episode of Deep Look and the same thing occurred to me. Mosquito abatement districts will give pond owners mosquitofish to put in their backyard ponds. But they don't give out dragonfly eggs or larvae. Thank you for watching! --Gabriela

      it IS a natural way to fend off mosquitos but the introduction of dragonflies into a new territory isn't a natural thing that happen so easily. most of the time, it's not beneficial. What I'm sayin' is, if it escapes, it might be an invasive species.

    • @MillerJustinFS
      @MillerJustinFS 3 года назад

      @@Jin-cj3gl No way, dragonflies are awesome. They are actually closer to endangered than invasive in most places. They only lay eggs as an adult, which is only for 6-8 months, but the larva take years to grow into adults. They eat flies and mosquitoes, the most annoying pests, so who wouldn't want them?

    • @theworthysoul
      @theworthysoul 2 года назад

      Only in places where they are a problem though, and with native dragonflies. It’d be damaging to do it in places with harmless or non-biting mosquitoes.

    I am happy that you made a video of Dragonflies! Before me, I had a baby brother (Which is not a baby now :-), He's about 16 now?) Who died of disease carried by a mosquito, He could've lived IN the hospital if my Mom didn't let go. But she saw how he was suffering and didn't want to see it anymore, So she spent his last hours at home. At his burial, It was fall when we buried him. Weirdly enough, Dragonflies we're all over his coffin. My Dad shoo-ed them away but we have a suspicion that whenever we see just a unusually small dragonfly, We think it's him visiting us every now and then. :)
    Thanks if you read this whole thing. :O

    When I was a little and I was going to a pond to catch mosquito larvas as food for many aquarium fish we had. Once I brought this monster home and put into the aquarium. I remember this lower jar shooting forward. I remember transparent body it had. It lived there for some time. I really enjoyed watching it feed. Thank you for bringing these memories =)
