  • The first video showing the issues it had when it came in:
    • Friedman Runt 50 and C...
I so wanted to type "Running Through What It Do" just for the rhyme scheme.
But that would summon THOSE comments. Those people are fun at parties.
In theory. They are never invited to parties.
Anyway, this Runt 50 is done and sounding great. Here's an overview of (some of) the tones you can get with it.
Alder/Rosewood Strat with Suhr Thornbucker and Mojotone 67 Quiet Coils, NYXL 10s, .80mm pick, and clumsy fingers.
SM-57 on a WGS ET65 into a Focusrite 2i2. No processing on the guitar other than level matching for best playback consistency.

Chinese 12AX7s are not a sign of bad quality. And a lot of rebranded tubes are Chinese.

One suggestion, occasionally move the guitar headstock so we can see the settings on the amp. I am new to electric guitar, so I take pictures for future reference. One again thank you.

The Runt sounds Great. I dial the presence up around 2 o'clock, mids about 3 o'clock and treble and bass at noon'sh. Gain can go from light Crunch too VH,Hair Metal and is usable at 11. Hot Humbuckers make the gain channel even hit Early Thrash and Speed Metal no problem. Very Toneful amp as you have Well demonstrated.

Watched your video on fixing the Fender Reissues. Did the reverb driver wiring ( after safely discharging ) on my Princeton and the reverb sounds awesome. Quiet and more clear (to me anyway) and learned a lot about my soldering and wire stripping(did okay, no issues so far). Thanks for sharing tips for stuff like that!!

Did I get it right, that the gain channel voicing of the Friedman Runt has been changed over time? I tried the Runt once in a while at guitar stores, but always felt it to be too bright and thin. However, when I tried a brand new Runt just a few days ago, I even preferred it to the Smallbox.

    Hey man, odd question:
I saved the "brain" and some wood from a 1956 Lowery Organo tube organ back during the Texas Freeze. Pipes burst & it wasn't going to be a piano/organ again.
Fascinating. The amp section is 2x6v6, the rest old Octal tubes.
    Tone section...60 (!) 12A*7 tubes, 12 12ax7 and 48 12AU7/12AY7. 12 banks of 5 sockets, on individual plates.
Lots of GE & Raytheon OS tubes, and afaik these were biased really cold, so "mileage" should be low.
Don't suppose this would be interesting channel fodder? I'm sure the amp could be interesting, and then there's the tone section, seemingly waiting to be made into a bevy of flame throwing preamps.
About a metric ton of carbon comp resistors, Sprague caps and the like.
Lmk, have pics. Or, just a bit of advice on where to get started - this stuff is hard to find lore on.
Great channel, thanks for saving me from a Mesa, speaking of carbon comps.

Hey! I got one of those but I find that the bottom end is really flubby. Especially on the clean channel. Not chimey at all ... even on 9 o clock on the clean vol. (with bass at 10 o clock and trebble at 2 oclock.) I'm thinking it might be the power tubes. What current (mA) did you bias this one? do you remember? LMK please...
    Awesome content BTW!!!!

I really want a JCM800 but they're just so expensive and I've been considering one of these amps but I'm not sure if it would scratch that itch. Would you say it's in the ballpark of an 800 or is it more into Plexi/superlead territory? Or would I be better off being patient and saving for a legit 2204/2203? Thanks for making a video that demonstrates the range and not just shredding like crazy, it's nice to actually hear an amp

TAD redbase 7025 sound pretty good for new production . A little more stout than JJ ECc83, snappier and cleaner bass response . Even when considering the weak old tubes , it makes sense to me that you discovered better headroom after the new tubes. Nice musical feedback on those single notes Lyle !

How much trouble is it to add a switch to take the bright cap in and out of the circuit on a DRRI?

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  Год назад

It’s easy if you have the right tools. Use a 3 way center off. 47p, none, 120p. Another switch can give you different mids responses. Just have a pro do it so the panel doesn’t get chewed up.

Hi Lyle I'm a big fan of your videos I've learned a LOT. Recently I've took on a project cleaning my 16 channel mixing board. It's 10 yrs old and really dirty. I've sprayed all the pots and sliders with D5 and F5 deoxit but there's a lot of residue left on the board from overspray so I looked up how to clean circuit boards and came across this video. I've tried to wrap my head around it but this method to me seems very very wrong and would destroy the board am I correct for assuming this? Any advise would be well respected.

I wouldn’t reach for any acid-based cleaner. Isopropyl alcohol will remove most of the residue. That and a soft toothbrush. Distilled water is also good as long as you give it a long dry time.

This isn't exactly about this video per se, but you and other RUclips content providers spend an inordinate amount of time either directly enabling those who spend their musical lives trying to sound like someone else, or actually teaching them how to sound like someone else. Usually, hell, it always involves spending more money to satisfy your dreams.
I'm not accusing you of promoting that, but you apparently are asked about it a lot and how to achieve ...
I just wish more people in your position would simply say "Why chase somebody else's sound? No one gets famous for long by being just like somebody else. Why not develop your own sound or style? That's the key to becoming better known.
Why not remind people of that instead of feeding the copycats more pablum?
    Let the hate begin.

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  Год назад +4

No hate from me. I have said quite literally that in quite a few videos. Also that there’s a lot more to “The Sound” than the guitar and amp.
But I don’t see how you can think this was a “how to sound like X” video other than mentioning that early VH is brighter than many people think.

    • @clarkeblacker

@psionicaudio I apologize for placing your video in that category, I probably started writing when I heard Van Halen's name. Following the path already cut is often the shortest easiest path. We see it in automobile design, moviemaking, songwriting, business practice, and every area of competitive venture. We all desire individuality, copying other successful people is often rewarded and respected more often than unusual methods. Proven success is hard to ignore. We learn by observing and emulating what others have shown to be accepted and profitable. Few musicians can become popular without first having a cover band. Copying helps to develop and understand music and your instrument. Success is built on those blocks.
Most people have a style and sound that stinks.
