Back in the mid 50s my great uncle was the signalman in the Sth Goulburn box and I ( was about 8 or 9) rode in 4848 for a while, when it was shunting, 1st Ive seen 4848 since
I remember encountering this same scene in '92 in Sydney at Wynyard while visiting for Newcastle (NSW). A lone 48 carrying flatbeds and other trucks going through the city circle. An absolutely crazy sight that would not be permitted today during regular operational hours. It was also fantastic that the driver seemed to dump a few amps into it mid platform so as to produce a thick soot of fumes that cleared the platform directly. I was last in Sydney in 2018 so don't recall or know if they have changed the iconic G-major triad announcement tone and corresponding (male) voice. Thanks for the memories!
The voice is a female these days but the triad announcement sound is still the same. The voice actor was replaced in the late 90s, 2000s, and 2010s as new stations were added
Yes it does does Back many memories good memories the huge variety of diesel locomotive we had in New South Wales awesome days for Trainspotting not the same these days
Never mind OHS, not even the engineers wouldn't allow it. It's definitely pushing the axle load limits for the upper decks of Town Hall and Wynyard. Haha!
Hmm, being an American, I don't remember Australia having underground train systems. But it's actually bizarre to see freight trains passing by underground passenger train stations, with billowing smoke. Whoa!
@@jamesfrench7299 i can only remember a diesel being underground in USA was a scene of a Bulldog loco in Superman (1) in NYC where Otis evades the police going to Luthor's lair, now wether that was a replication of real life practices i'm unsure.
We only have a small section of subways in Sydney, anyway. It is a loop underneath the cbd. It is a rip off of the London underground in a way. The system of tunnrls was greatly extended as bomb shelters in ww2, but never subsequently used for trains.
Hahaha! At least 4848 had a scrubber ... shame about the leading unit. Imagine standing on Wynyard or Museum platform, dressed to go somewhere important, and you get sprayed with ALCo soot! 😂
I think this where where train spotters who have been sinful end up if they go to hell! The have to endure slow running trains going buy belching out diesel fumes for the rest of eternity!
All the memories come flooding back. Best times

Do my eyes deceive me ? What a time to be alive.
The good old days - OH&S couldn't possibly allow it with passengers in there now!

lmao imagining being in the train station when one of these come by you literally just being inside smoke
5:30 Why did 4849 have a reversed SRA logo?
Great videos, do the diesels get in the Underground much at all these days? or is it mainly just the 2 86's now?
Looks like the railways were a lot more fun back in those days!
this video was well made 🏅🏅

only since the 1920s in Sydney....
Not likely in the outback but yes in actual cities which Australia has.

Oh yes, the remote control one.

What was this for?? Trackwork maintenance i must know. It's really cool to see that it wouldn't happen nowadays
Absolute madmen taking Alcos underground
why do the class 48 have a weird smock stack
Exhaust Scruber
Didn't they have the 86 class in 1992?
back in the day south australian freight trains used the same track as the passenger service .
it wasnt a subway though..

Special exhaust scrubbers on the 48's.
on the odd one... most of those in the video didn't have them fitted.
Seems absolutely stupid, some were going around the city-circle loop, I ask why?
eh theyre a MOW train anyway
