Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them. "American Pie" pays tribute to the loss of 3 legends who died so young (Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper). A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others.
Gives me chills every time I listen to this one. Don McLean asked Home Free to help him celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song. They created a masterpiece with this collaboration. He also invited Home Free to sing the chorus when he was presented with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
So many times, when a star has passed their peak popularity, and try’s to reinvent a super-hit, they change a tempo, and mostly a melody, trying to sound “fresh”, yet only succeed in ruining their own classic and become a disappointment to their old fans, and are uninteresting to potential new ones. Don stayed true to his song and sound, yet added a FRESH twist to his song. Props to Don, and to Home Free for the love and respect a classic like this deserves!
Don sounds great for 75! This was during Covid so I thought the boxes were clever. They remind me of shadow boxes you keep your memories in. When Don received the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Don called up Home Free and asked them to come out and celebrate with him. They sand a little bit of the song too. How cool! Home Free is so good. Known for tight harmonies. I Can’t Outrun You, Brothers in Arms, In the Blood, Die a Happy Man. Enjoy! 😍
This is one of Home Free’s pandemic videos. They released a new video every couple of weeks all the way through the pandemic. They recorded this for the 50th anniversary of this song won 3 Telly awards and was asked to be there when Don received his Star on The Walk Of Fame. Poor Adam almost passed out a couple of times with beatboxing for such a long period of times but he nailed it. They just released a couple of originals the last few weeks that are amazing as always. Playing With Fire Remember My Name
Some trivia for you. Apparently this cover was released 50 years after the original version. And Don has never recorded/released any other versions of this song since the original. He was apparently quite pleased with the result.
I love this song. Thanks for reacting to it. I remember playing American Pie over and over again when it came out. Don's voice has held up so well. What a gift. Home Free sang part of this song when Don got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They also participated in a documentary about Don and this song. They've partnered with other original singers/bands. Kenny Rogers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Billy Gilman, Texas Hill. I know I'm forgetting some, in truth the only ones I had heard of were The Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers and Don McLean. What can I say, I love my boys. 😃
The other thing to remember is when Tim is singing lead, then Chance picks up the bass notes, he's and Tim both have a big range, Tim 5 octaves, Chance 4, he can sign up in tenor with Rob and Austin but he can also get down pretty deep in the basement with Tim.
This is a 50 th anniversary of this song. Don approached Home Free to do this anniversary edition. I just love this version. And Don still sounds great!
Tim's range is G0-A5. I believe that Don asked them to sing with him; most of the people with whom they've collaborated have asked for them. Sometimes, recently, they have invited people who are on the rise but not well known to sing with them. Try "The Horses". It was filmed in Australia during their recent tour.
Don McLean and Home Free did knock it out of the park. It can out in 1971, I was a senior in Highschool. I still have it on a 45 & it covered both sides. A long song but a classic.
This is one of many that they gave us while quarantine was going on. During that dreadful time they put out a new video every other week, and they still are. Choose any of their songs and you won't be disappointed 🏴
New sub because of Home Free. You won't be disappointed with your choice to explore them more. Welcome to the family from their seasoned Home Fry to our newest Home Fry!
So glad you enjoyed this. Its the song of my generation...I'm 63 now but was just 11 when this was released on Oct 24th, 1971. This was during "covid quarantine" so that's why they weren't together. Recommendation : their original Playing with fire, and their cover of the Doobie Brothers 1972 hit, Listen to the musiv
Hello All! Just to share with you, there's a terrific documentary about the making of "American Pie" with a spot by Home Free. According to the film, Don McLean invited them to join him in this collaboration. I can't believe the song is 50 years old!
The acapella bands (Home Free is my favourite) have a huge under-served worldwide following. Home Free comprises 5 vocal chameleons, including 3 song writers & an incomparable beatboxer. There are loads of original songs as well as covers and lots of live (audience taken) videos. Keep falling down the rabbit hole! I think the age in Don McLean's voice only adds to the poignancy of the song. Love from a new Canadian subscriber.
They also have collaborations with Charlie Daniels ("The Devil Went Down to Georgia"), Kenny Rogers "Children Go Where I Send Thee"), Alabama "Christmas in Dixie"), The Oak Ridge Boys ("Elvira", "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem") and Lee Greenwood ("God Bless the U.S.A.) among others.
Loved your reaction! I love this arrangement and the amazing collaboration between Don and Home Free. Did anyone notice that when it came to Tim's solo and he was singing about fire and the Devil, there were matches under him and all the guys? Nice touch!
I love to see people such as you discover the magic we call HomeFree. Your joy and happiness was contagious. Hope you do continue down the rabbit hole. Their music is so well worth the time. Enjoy and I'm subscribing for more HomeFree tunes. You might enjoy "Working for a Living", the old Huey Lewis and the News song. ❤✌
Adam Rupp almost passed out the first run through 7 mins of beats is a LOT! *chuckle Kudos for that work etic of just getting it dialed in . Great job Home Free and Don but the trophy goes to Adam Rupp for this one.
This was arranged during quarantine so if my memory serves me correctly Austin and Tim met up with Don at the studio in Nashville, TN where he originally recorded this version and did the remake there with Austin and Tim and the other 3 did their recording in their respective places. Also, I agree Don still sounds great after all of these years. Keep up the great reactions and thank you for adding Home Free to your “ to do” list.
That song is still wonderful after all these years. For other times Home Free joins the original performer to make a song even better check out Children Go Where I Send Thee with Kenny Rogers, Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys, and Beautiful Star of Bethlehem feat. the Oak Ridge Boys and Jeffrey East. And one thing you have to remember with videos by Home Free, Austin Brown, Tim Foust, and VoicePlay is that -- not every time but often enough to always assume -- there is often a message or statement or outtakes shown after the song itself if over. Home Free's The Butts Medley, VoicePlay's Drunken Sailor, and Austin Brown's "Ain't No Sunshine" on the pond at dusk are excellent examples of this. Enjoy!
One of the things we home fries admire about Home Free is their lack of ego when it comes to sharing the spot light with their guest artists as well as each other. They always take the background to show off their guests and they vote on which member takes the lead in each of their own songs. Their versatility in genres is remarkable. So glad you're enjoying your adventure into Home Free land. So much joy awaits you. Subbed and see you again soon.
They have done a wonderful arrangement of Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys which is a lot of fun. Another a cappella group to try is Pentatonix - Start with Hallelujah and go on to Bohemian Rhapsody and the Daft Punk medley
You were saying about vocal ranges...to get a clear appreciation for what this band actually does, you need to look at the individual members as well as the group as a whole. You started with Tim Foust-Bass...with all his versatility he is really Falsetto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass and Subharmonics. Austin Brown 1st tenor, Falsetto. Rob Lundquist Tenor. Adam Chance(Called Chance)Baritone, tenor,Falsetto and Bass. Adam Rupp Beatbox also Tenor. So, the group as a whole has 2 Bass, 2 Baritone, 5 Tenor, 4 Falsetto and 1 in Subharmonic range! All together that makes up to one pretty amazing group of singers, and none of them have any issues with being egotistical! Great Reaction!
All Acapella.. how amazing.. wow.. and Tim is singing lead. .. and not baritone... he can sing all.. Look him up. he's amazing... And if you don't think that is great music. go away.. don't want any parts of you.. this is great music
Such a creative way to continue to put out videos--in spite of quarantine! 🥰 And goodness--one wonders how the amazing Adam Rupp was able to beatbox through such a long song without passing out!! 🤯 #HomeFree
I absolutely love lov lov your reaction m8. Magic! Welcome to the world of Home Frys🥰 I think Tim's lowest bass note is A1 if you have an 88 keyboard, and you count from the left on yp.👏👏👏
I don't know if you know who the names go to. The first one singing is Adam Chance (Chance) baritone. The second one was Austin Brown sky high tenor. Then Rob Lundquist(beard and glasses). And finally Tim Foust bass. They did an absolutely amazing job with Don. Enjoyed watching your reaction to this song.
New sub here. If you want to hear their humorous side you should check out their song "The Butts Remix" Great reaction and welcome to the rabbit hole known as Home Free.
I don't want to be rude.. I think you're accent is Australian? I'm sorry if I'm wrong. I'm just a country girl from the USA. Don't want to offend anyone. I live in a country with so many accents.. I'm more from the south in my country and I can't understand ppl from the north.. facts.. I've been to Maine and with their New England accent.. in my own country.. I couldn't understand them.. lol.. truth.

HF was ask by Don to collaborate on this the 50th anniversary of release. HF was also with him when his star on Broadway was unveiled per his request.

They all won Telly awards for this video. Don is coming up on his 78th birthday in October, and he still sounds great!

My vote is for Listen To The Music or Helplessly Hoping.
Great choices to see and hear their skills. Especially good for someone familiar with the songs.

Hey Dee thanks for the comment. I reckon I’ve listened to it 20 times this afternoon already
Great reaction, CS. Hope you get a chance to do more Home Free reactions in the future!

When Tim was singing, Chase did the bass, then Tim picked it back up when he finished his verse. Talk about seamless.

Home Free sang this at Don McLean's star ceremony when he got his star on the walk of fame.

Tim Foust in interviews has said that he tries to sound like a bass guitar as much as possible.
He certainly achieves it.thanks for the comment.
Loved your reaction. You have a lot to hear and won't be disappointed!
Thanks Glenda much appreciated

Thanks Judy.definitely checking out more home free .
Tim's ability to imitate a stand up bass is remarkable. Between him and Adam, it is too easy to forget that there are no instruments.
It is not often I refer to a song as a masterpiece , this version nails it . Shivers indeed!
Adam Rupp almost passed out the first run through 7 mins of beats is a LOT! *chuckle Kudos for that work etic of just getting it dialed in . Great job Home Free and Don but the trophy goes to Adam Rupp for this one.
I doesn’t surprise me.thats a big effort!
They have so many great songs. You can't go wrong with your next one..

Adam Rupp the unbelievable beatboxer is said to have had oxygen on hand. 8 minutes is a looong time to beatbox.
I don’t know how he does it!

If you listened to The Doobie Brothers at all you should check out Home Free's cover of "Listen To The Music".
Thanks Bobbie sounds like it will be well worth a listen.another song I like too.

Totally agree.Adam Rupp really is an amazing talented person.thanks for the comment
This was filmed during lockdown and these guys had to work from home for the most part. This video was so cleverly edited that it won a Telly award.
I wondered about the box theme.it makes sense now! Thanks for that 👍
I absolutely love lov lov your reaction m8.
Magic! Welcome to the world of Home Frys🥰
I think Tim's lowest bass note is A1 if you have an 88 keyboard, and you count from the left on yp.👏👏👏
Don actually asked Home Free to help with the 50th anniversary for the song.
I can see why he did.they have really added value which isn’t always achieved.
I LOVE THE WAY YOU REACTED TO THIS. And knew someone who, other than me, remember the story of what happened. THANK YOU!!! 👏🏼🎶🎵
I remember! 💔
Cheers Lyn !
Great reaction! I could see the emotion as you mouthed the words! We all feel it!!!
Cheers for the comment Donna

Don't forget Adam Rupp, human percussionist extraordinaire. He and his brother Chris Rupp started this group over 20 years ago.
Really great reaction. Thank you very much. Subbed. 😀
Hi thanks for the sub, much appreciated
Don asked them to work with him for the 50 year- he decided what he wanted to sing
Not my favorite HF song. But I’m so happy for Don. An iconic song.
Your piano is not a full set of 88 keys. Tim said basically start at the lowest note on the piano and count up 5 octives.
New sub here. If you want to hear their humorous side you should check out their song "The Butts Remix" Great reaction and welcome to the rabbit hole known as Home Free.
Hi John.many thanks.sounds humorous and well worth an inspection.
Tim can go subharmonic
I love it when Tim summons the dragon!!!

Hey Michelle yeah not Australia but right next door to Australia, New Zealand. Thanks for checking out the video
That was beautiful and respectful to Don
Absolutely.didn’t it do justice to the original!
That's Tim. He's insanely good.
Isn’t he.cheers for the comment
