    “It means I don’t ever have to work a day again for the rest of my life” - Don McLean
    The best answer ever as to the meaning of a song.

    A very sad song. The repeated phrase "the day the music died" refers to a plane crash in 1959 that killed early rock and roll stars Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, ending the era of early rock and roll; this became the popular nickname for that crash

    Stopped by for some old school poetry. Dude is a lyricist. “Moss gross fat on a rolling stone but that’s not how it used to be. “

    Duane, the explanation of this song by Mr.McLean lasts around 40 minutes, so just a few pointers. In February 23rd 1959 a plane crash killed 3 of the most cherished musicians of that time. Mr. Ricky Valance, The Big Bopper and unforgettable Buddy Holly. The day the music died. The jester is Mr. Bob Dylan, the girl who sang the blues was Janice Choplin The Quartet in the park were the Beatles. This song is more or less a history lesson. The marching bands symbolize the Vietnam War, and so on. I was born in 1959, so I lived through this era. I am sorry to say, the world didn´t get better.
    The other famous song of Mr. McLean is "Vincent" about Dutch painter Vincent VanGogh, a genius born long before his time.
    Duane before listening to Mr. McLean´s song, look up some pictures of Master VanGogh, so you can understand what Mr. McLean sings about.
    You, my friend be safe and sound.
    Elmar from Germany

      VanGogh died believing himself a failure. Having sold only one painting in all his life. For pennies. He had no way of knowing he would be renowned as of of the greatest painters of all time.

    It suprises me that no one mentioned that the chorus line "This'll be the day when I die" was a paraphrase of Buddy Holly's biggest hit "That'll be the day" (You should review that one, Duane) ... PS Richie Valens was 17 and unmarried when he died, the "Widowed Bride" was Maria Elena Holly... Don McClean was a paperboy and found out about his idol's death, while doing deliveries; as mentioned in the line "But February made me shiver, with every paper I deliver"

    This song is about the death of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper in a plane crash. Don did a remake of this song with Home Free. The a cappella band that you just reacted to their cover of "Listen to the Music". In the video they used old film footage from his childhood.

    Covers a history of rock n’roll from the day the plane crashed in 1959 to the later historic events regarding Elvis, Dylan, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Vietnam War…etc. But, McLean never fully explained the meanings of everything.

    I don't think that Don Mclean came up with the phrase "The day the music died." I believe I read a long time ago it was a newspaper writer in Cleveland who said it, but I haven't been able to verify that.
    But Don McClean has been asked a thousand times what the song means. He has one answer, "It means I never have to work again."

    A Beech _Bonanza, N 3794N, crashed at night· approximately 5 Miles northwest of the Mason City Municipal Airport, Mason City, Iowa, at approximately 0100, February 3,19S9. The pilot and three passengers were killed and the aircraft was demolished.The aircraft was observed to take o!f toward the south in a normal manner, turn and climb to an estimated altitude of 800 feet, and then head in a northwesterly direction. When approximately 5 miles had been traversed, the tail light of the aircraft was seen to descend gradually until it disappeared from sight. Following this, many unsuccessful attempts were made to contact the aircraft by radio. The wreckage was found in a field later that morning.

    It's about my 60's generation from the innocent times when Buddy Holly died to Altamont and the deaths of JFK, LBJ, and Bobby (the father, son, and holy ghost). The Jester is Dylan, the king is Elvis, the girl is Janis Joplin, the quartet is Beatles. Miss American Pie might be Marilyn Monroe. Helter Skelter is from a beatles song and was scrawled in blood on the wall of the Charles Manson murders. It's about our and America's loss of innocense.

  • @philipkoen5811
    @philipkoen5811 Год назад +2

    Madonna also recorded it some years ago....maybe you remember that version😉.... Nothing beats this version....it's all about Buddy Holly‼️ The Jester was a synonym for Buddy Holly & the King is obviously Elvis💯.
    Every time this song comes on...the volume goes up🔊 Great reaction💥

    • @emerald1805
      @emerald1805 Год назад +1

      Actually the “Jester” refers to Bob Dylan. Later in the song he mentions ‘the Jester on the sidelines in a cast’ referring to when Dylan broke his neck. Holly had been dead for years.
