My Gouache tips for you are: 1. I can recommend using gouache fresh out of the tube (if possible). 2. If you want to use a palette, use a sealed one! Then the colours stay fresh for longer. 3. Store your tubes in a plastic bag (you can use one of these freezer bags) Love your videos btw. so please keep it up :) Greetings from Berlin
-for getting nice flat colours and the ability to blend you wanna have the consistency be that of cream. -You can also put the paints on a wet paper towel and have a spray bottle at hand to keep the paints and palette alive. -Also if it is a big painting if you mix up your main colours in advance in little plastic containers (I use takeaway dip containers) and then store them in a tupperware/polystyrene box with a wet paper towel, the paints will last up to a month, wet, if sealed and the paper towel is moist enough. - for the tubes drying out I am not sure, never had it happen except to one of my greens. I do live in the uk though so it's rare for anything to really dry out ;p Check out Syd Mead's work and tutorials for some insane use of gouache in illustration. Edit: P.s. beautiful painting, love your colours:)
Drawing prompt suggestions: 1) make a drawing using the color pallet of your favorite dog breed 2) take a color pallet of a colorful bird and make a fantasy creature with it 3) monochrome animal and mushroom drawings
I’m the opposite, realised yesterday that I haven’t done any art since September. Really wish I could draw every day, so my art could get better. Love your videos xxx
IT IS SO AWESOME TO SEE YOU GOING STRONG WITH WHAT, FOR ME, IS THE SINGLE MOST FEEL GOOD ART I HAVE EVER SEEN. CAN'T WAIT TO STICK SOME MORE OF YOUR STICKERS ON AND IN MY CAR. YOUR LIKE BEATRIX POTTER MEETS GHIBLI. LOVE IT.
Your colors and drawings are always pretty! I actually did a suggestion bucket for myself and now I'm drawing a pill bottle head person! Thanks for the inspiration!
I really love the idea of more “abstract” prompts- such as “warmth” or “reflect” or “nostalgia”- and filling the page with different ways you want to approach the subject. For some inspo on prompts like this I highly recommend checking out Jess Karp’s prompt lists. They very much remind me of stuff you enjoy drawing anyways :) 🌿🍄
For the gouache falling off the palette if it is acrylic gouache it will always fall off the palette because of the acrylic nature, (not sure if you were asking on that kind lol) but for regular gouache I’ve noticed it depends mostly on the brand and quality. For example, I started with reeves and those always rewet well for me, but arteza gouache has a more chalky formula and flakes off the palette. just saw the part with you different gouaches and the Holbein gouache has always been great for me.. As for helping with the rewetting if I have some wet gouache on a palette that I want to reuse I will sometimes wraps the palette in plaster wrap to keep it sealed, it does help it stay wet longer and I feel help it to be a bet thicker when rewettting, spritzing with water and letting it sit then mixing it I think helps with it not being quiet as watery.. it’s such a struggle lol. Hope you can find what works for you!!!!
I keep my paint tubes in an air tight container when I’m not using them to stop them from drying out and I add glycerin to my gouache when I put it in a pallet to keep it in there and to make it like jelly gouache.
Jelly Gouache for your sketchbook is an AWESOME idea! I have the HIMI 36 color 12 gram each (1 regular jelly cup split in half with 2 colours.... More colours, smaller footprint.
For the prompt jar: 1) fantasty/rpg character design 2) draw the objects/props a character might own- what’s in their bag 3.) plant studies 4.) use an art supply that you haven’t used in a while or don’t usually use 5.) experiment with color and fill the page with swatches 6.) draw fanart from something you enjoy 7.) draw what’s in your bag/pencil case or things or your desk
Ahh I love the way you texture stuff and paint them and the colors you choose ! They're so nice ! Your voice is relaxing as well ( nothing against other art youtubers but i'm really not a fan of the super upbeat and quirky style of commentary ). As for prompt suggestions, yeah sure I can add my two cents ! - texture studies ( like tree bark, fabrics, crumpled paper, rocks... pinterest is great for stuff like this ) - fashion illustration or fashion design ! just making some cool clothes ! i can be on people or animals, whatever you want ! - creature design ( combining animals or mythological creatures ) - creating illustrations from flower meaning ! flowers and their meanings can be super interesting, and you can randomly generate a flower and go with it ! - silhouette drawings ? think black cats how you can only see a blobby shape with eyes ? like that ! - fanart ! got any stuff you like with characters or locations you like to look at ? draw them ! doesn't even have to be accurate, you could draw your fav as a duck if you wanted to ! - take a random picture of scenery you like and make a character out of it - black and white contrast drawings ! no gray, just pure black and white, or you could use any other color with white as long as you use only that color ! Okay this is getting a little long, haha ! Whether or not you use any of these, I hope you have fun !
Draw things with just blue or brown you can also do green. I'm mostly suggesting the colors that aren't many in "cheap" art supplies. I bet you know what I'm talking about. Also you are a very good artists, I like how you draw everything you do.
Use either a stay wet or airtight palette, or use direct from the tube. Mix on a ceramic plate. Squeeze the air out of the tubes so the paint is nearer the top and store in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Use vaseline or lip salve around the tube threads to stop the lid getting stuck. Don't do your lids up too tight, you'll create a mess if a lid does get stuck. Alternatively, use airtight salsa containers and squeeze some out into those. That allows you to mix a small batch of colours you use regularly as well.
i store my wet gouache in those little containers from paint-by-numbers (i bought a bunch on amazon). They are airtight (they can afterall, hold acrylics without them drying) and are perfect for my needs. There are also slightly different sizes, if one needs bigger "cups". And if I mix a certain colour, I can just use one of the left over cups and store the paint (the pack I got was like 100, so I have plenty over for my mixing needs)
also, they are pretty reusable. if there is a colour I dont have/need anymore and the cup is empty, I can just clean it and use it for thee next one. That way I have been using/storing some acrylic paint over like the last 5-10 years (the paint obviously changing, but the cups staying the same)
i use cling wrap under the caps, like a super small piece and it makes the seal more effective. And the falling off the pallete is a pain, it's just how it dries ;-; I think people get empty pans to put the paint in.
I really love how the mushroom rabbit turned out! I am happy to have found some nifty gouache tips in the comment section as well! Sadly i do not have any myself that others haven’t suggested already so I’ll leave some ideas for a drawing prompt (hoping it hasn’t already been done!) - a spread with your favorite food/foods (I love the variety in textures food provides! It is so nice to practice!) - your favorite thing you own/or favorite things you own - your favorite childhood toy or an imaginary friend The last two are pretty sappy, i find that whenever I am in a rut drawing something that reminds me of good and happy things helps tremendously! Keep up the good work Jel!
I have no idea if this will help with gouache- but I like painting with inks/calligraphy ink. And recently I've been trying to make more diluted ready to use versions of some of the darker colors I have. I bought "Cosmetic Jars" that have 'Leak proof gaskets' inside the lid which seals the air REALLY well. I've done tons of experiments with water inside of it and so far NO leaks. And they have different oz options to get. Maybe try to use some of these for some gouache that's not in tubes any more? It'd be easier to get the amount of ink out with using a palette knife too? I think just a few sprays before sealing it should be good to keep it wet. And the lid being bigger makes closing it much easier than some of those tubes that have such small lids. Also I love your work so much!!! I have always envied how people can see so much color in things. But I'll look at the same thing and everything just looks far more muted. (I've been trying to take advantage of it in my own way recently though)
My ideas for more sketchbook pages. Do light/dark studies with a colour by choice. Try a new medium and draw your favorite subject. Draw scènes fom different perspective/angel. And do not remove your lines keep them (part of the charm) good to help ppl learn Draw things that follow a certain shape, like a S I usually use a wet palette when using acrylic, maybe it works for gouache too.
Drawing suggestions- Draw some underwater sea life! (Coral, fish, sea otters, ect.) Do a study of your favorite artist's styles practice drawing/painting fur Swamp animals and foliage
I have jelly gouache and it's not really worth it lol. The case is big and heavy and you can't tilt it, it doesn't close properly, the filler in the colours makes mixing difficult... What a mess. I only use it to paint very large background areas now. It's far easier to add honey to the gouache and keep it in a folding palette (heung il/color around make some lovely aluminium ones, the 39 well one is delightfully small and practical and is where my winsor newton designers gouache lives). If done right, a few spritzes of water is all it takes to get it reactivated to a good consistency. I only use it from the tube when I know I'll have to fill in a huge area.
when you rewet gouache youre basically diluting it with more water than it originally had when you first applied it. Also if youre using a clean brush to rewet, some of that pigment is going to absorb back it to the brush, so youre also removing it from the paper. That's my take anyway 🙂
Fill your sketchbook challenge: Draw a fantasy kitchen and all the cooking supplies that would in it, ex. magic spice, mushroom spoon, bowl made of growing grass.
Can we have a vid about how u learned colour theory or learning colour theory and how you apply that to water colour and pencils together... Like how do you know what colour the shadows should be?
Maybe do a sketchbook page inspired by your favorite quote? Or... Song? Or book you're reading? You change things up but it's still your style, which is very cool. Great video. My bff got me some "card games" for my bday. They're sort of like magic cards, but they're ecologically inspired. So different birds, animals, plants, and even different ecosystems. I was thinking I could shuffle the cards and pull a few out to get inspiration.
Here’s an idea for the jar!; Draw one type of tree native to each continent (except Antarctica of course lol) like draw one tree that is native to North America, one from South America, Africa, etc. It gives you the opportunity to draw many different trees ❤️
