Musically, this is as impressive as any of your other works, but I don't quite understand the theme of the lyrics. Is this from the perspective of a character or something?
I was raised in the Mormon religion, and though I am no longer part of the faith, I often make use of themes and references from Mormonism in my songs. Here, the song takes the form of a monologue from the perspective of Alma the Younger, a religious leader and political figure from the Book of Mormon. The person addressed is Korihor, a character described as "the Antichrist," who is arrested and brought before the religious authorities for preaching against the faith. When Korihor demands that Alma provide him with a sign to prove the existence of God, he is rendered permanently unable to speak, and dies shortly thereafter.
The song critiques a particularly noxious argument advanced by so-called "Bible-believing" Christians: namely, that religious texts and dogma can be interpreted from a strictly literal perspective untainted by the personal biases and preferences of the reader. In my version of the Book of Mormon story, Alma fails to produce a literal sign from God to strike the Antichrist down, and decides to take matters into his own hands. "History" is written by the victors, after all…
As a final note, the image of the camel at the gate refers to a reading of Matthew 19:24 advanced by some politically conservative Christians, which interprets Jesus's admonition that "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God" as referring not to an actual needle, but to a gate in the old city of Jerusalem - thereby completely stripping Christ's words of their subversive character.
@@NoiseAndBells That makes a lot of sense, actually! I'm not a Mormon or a Christian at all, but I do find the whole thing quite interesting, so I very much appreciate this explanation. I did figure that the part with the camel was a reference to Matthew, although I didn't get the full implication of why you brought it up at the time.
By the way, I once heard that the word "camel" in that line was a mistranslation, and that it was originally supposed to refer to a mooring rope (κάμηλος vs. κάμιλος in Biblical Greek), which makes sense to me - why would anyone to pass a camel through the eye of a needle? Of course, neither a camel or a rope will fit through, so the overall meaning is the same.
