These comments are the perfect combination of “Well obviously we knew that” and “Wow, I had no idea” 😂
I’m not actually presenting this as though it’s an unknown. I’ve mentioned a lot of times before that most of the sound is added. I’ve just never shown the process in any real detail before.
Thanks for putting so much effort into these videos Gav 👍🏻 I knew it was added, but the scale of the task never occurred to me
"Sounds" like a lot of hard work!
On the subject of replacing the background soundtrack to "disguise" the silence; don't. We love it. I also feel like lots of others have mimicked you (or vice versa) and by that, that sound has become the "de facto" slow mo sound. No slowmotion video is complete without it. Anyway, great video 👍
Now we appreciate your work even more now that I know how hard it is to sync the sound! :)
I love the background sound to the slow mo, it's what marks it as a Slow Mo Guys video
Haha I hear you all loud and clear on synthetic design 02. I’ll keep it around for at least another 10 years.
Yes please never get rid of it
This synthetic choir is the theme of the channel :D
Slow Mo Guys just wouldn't be the same withour it.
Possibly the most pleasant ambience in any video on youtube.
Keep doing what you're doing Gavvyboi.
Keep the hair for a bit gavin, it looks good
The slow-mo shots really wouldn't be the same without the calming ambiance and nice sound effects, so we all appreciate your sacrifice.
Simon Rex Eagar 100%
I wonder what song they use
I know it would be very different without the sound
Totally agree
Agreed!!
Synthetic Design 02, 50%, unpreserved pitch: the sound of Slow Mo Guys.
i could listen to that loop for hours on end. feels like i’m calm underwater with no worries.
*"Synthetic Design 02"* is like a Slow Mo Guys signature sound. *Don't you dare replace it!* Please. I like that sound alot.
Literally came to say this haha!
Gav, you’re literally getting threats from fans 🤣
HEAR! HEAR! I always just thought it was background music and it's one of the reasons I like the vids.
It does mark the videos as clearly slow mo guys. I wouldn’t care if he changed it but I think he should be aware that it has become a signature so changing it will mean it will take some time for the new sound to take the same place in viewers minds.
Yeah, I agree. At this point, you used it SO much, you get more flak IF you replace it.
It really IS a signature sound after all this time.
Just keep it as is.

Seriously, the number of things that Gavin has just intuitively figured out and taught himself (including stellar sound design) is amazing. Truly an eye and ear for detail. I actually went to school for audio engineering, and there's a lot of stuff in this video that some people in my classes struggled to understand.
Now I want a supercut of just the slow mo scenes, but mainly to listen to them.
@@TheSlowMoGuys2 You have done a great job, and seen other comments prior of you inspiring them to study different subject.
Never get rid of the synthetic choir, it’s THE sound of slowmo guys.
It's THE sound of slowmo.
I was waiting for him to say signature sound cause that's what it is.
it's such a classic classic sound
Yeah, he didn't seem to have realized that's become THE audio signature of his channel.
He's just using it because he hasn't come up with something else, and we all know it as THE SLO MO GUYS SOUND.
Yeah.
Now that he's revealed the name of it, I can't help but wonder how many other similar channels will start using it.
Gav: "I just kinda made it up as I go."
... and has formed the standard for a lot of media how slow motion sounds. I noticed Mark Rober use the slowmo whoop and layering that Gav uses, and it makes me happy to see how these two blokes from the Island have had such an influence on changing how media is perceived.
Most shooting or gun related youtubers that use slow motion (Larry Vickers, Jerry Miculak, etc...) almost always use a lot of elements that Gavin likley pioneered. Like the slow down "whooomp" noise.
What makes you assume that he "pioneered" or "set the standard" for anything? He never went in depth about how he makes these sounds. Just because he's supposedly the first to do these sound layering effects does not mean that everybody else followed suit because of him. It's likely they also coincidentally used a similar method out of their own discovery in isolation. And how do you even know he is the first to use these methods? Slow motion sound design has been around for decades.
Gav is a cool and intelligent guy, I fully acknowledge that, but admiring someone doesn't imply that they're better than everyone else or should be put on a pedestal. There's such a thing as giving someone too much credit.
Smarter Everyday uses the same kind of sound design too. Which isn't surprising, Gav has borrowed Destin's camera a few times 😄
I mean... this is really nothing new. Sound design in slow motion scenes has been the standard for cinema and tv shows years before you tube was even a thing. What do you think they did in this scene:
ruclips.net/video/8DajVKAkL50/видео.html
Gavin has also worked in the idustry for a while, including on a bunch of pretty big films.
The sound design in the videos is so "natural" that I've never really noticed all of Gavin's hard work.
I'll be quite honest, I don't know how I'd feel if Synthetic Design 02 were gone. It's so synonymous with the channel that it's basically the 3rd Slow Mo Guy
"I'm Gavin."
"And I'm Dan."
"*ooooooooooooooo*"
I agree.
Yeah, I don't think you can get rid of Synthetic Design 02. Even if you find a new one... SD02 HAS to be in there at least in one shot. It has become your sonic brand.

The orchestral sound is your signature sound. Don’t change it. It gives a comfortable familiarity that lets you know that you are watching a Slow Mo Guys video. Your attention to sound detail is probably as much as a third of reason for the channel’s popularity. The other two thirds being the quality content type and you two. Keep up the good work.
The cat purring actually made me laugh. I was not expecting that
Hell, I just thought the cat purr was interesting... I love cats and have owned many of them... And love the sound of their purr, but that slo mo sound was quite fascinating...
Please NEVER get rid of Synthetic Design 02.
At this point I can't imagine a Slow Mo Guys video without it, it's just so ingrained into the channel branding despite never being mentioned up until this point.
It's the perfect slowed down sound of silence...
I agree. What works, works. And does not matter how many years you use it.
It's become part of channel canon at this point. It'd be like a missing cast member.
Bartholomew Dan Really? Synthetic Design 02 has been mentioned by them before, in a Q&A video they did 9 years ago
@@Connie_TinuityError 9 years ago in a Q&A is basically as good as never.
I never want you to get rid of synthetic design 02. That song is such a huge part of the channel it would be a genuine shame to lose it

Totally! It's like the signature sound of Slow Mo Guys.
Yeah it's a signature thing by now!
agreed, we hear it - we know what we got.
I agree, if this ever leaves, I'll be genuinely sad I think lol.
The attention to detail is seriously an art form. I mean 9 hours just doing sound for one video like that’s intense and the result is more beautiful than the random viewer could imagine. And the sound for filling up silence is both comforting/familiar and perfectly relaxing. Sometimes “professional” is just years of experience, hard work, and passion
17:35 That "gap filler" of yours has become the signature sound effect of your videos in my ears.
I like it alot, it just fits perfectly with the awe-inspiring footage! 😯😃👍

The "synthetic design 02" is like your, The Slow Mo Guys, signature sound because to me it sounds perfect during ALL of your slow shots. I've always liked that sound because to me it is a "I'm immersed in this very slow shot" kinda feel. Also the 'slow down" sound is another signature sound. Awesome work Gav. I know I'm late to the party but I am just now watching this video. Keep up the awesome work and hopefully Dan can get on a plane soon and get back to the USA and film together again!
I've been waiting for Gav to flex his sound design for idk how many years now, and it was even better than I could imagine.
"Synthetic Design 2" is how you know you're watching a Slow Mo Guys video.
“Slow Down” into a speed-ramped “Synthetic Design 2” is when you know you’re about to see some cool shit.
IT'S BLUE
Be careful about replacing that "Synthetic Design 2" sound. To me, that sound IS a Slo-Mo Guys vid. It's like your trademark. Change with caution.
@@BLenz-114 I agree 100%. This is de facto THE SOUND of Slow Mo Guys. Whether it was planned to be so is irrelevant.

Just noticed the Simone Giertz Everyday Calendar in the background
I would be soo sad if the “choir” sound got taking out. Its soo relaxing and its just apart of the slow mo guys. Please never remove that from your videos 🙏🙏🙏
It's called space ambience search it up if you want
The most he should do would be to get a professional electronic musician to add a few bars to extend it where needed... But certainly mustn't change it
This.
I'm sure he would swap it by a similar sound and not replace it forever, but merely sometimes.
It's actually 'ambient' music btw. It's a genre. The space part is just what it's themed around.
If I ever see slowmo without sound. The choir always comes to mind. As if it is the sound you get from filming in slowmo
Shoutout to Simone Gertz's Everyday Calendar in the background
This video did not take away any of the magic you guys do with each one. I truly enjoyed hearing you nerd out about sound. And the purring ? Killed me. Cheers Gav and Dan!
Knowing this info now, I cannot even describe the level or respect, awe and wonder that Gavin puts into those videos. Not that I hated any of the editing before but it's a whole new caliber of appreciation that I didn't know existed lol. Simply amazing!
KEEP SYNTHETIC DESIGN 2!! Seriously though, it has become your trademark. Bob Ross absolutely hated his afro, but decided to keep it for decades because it was associated with him.
I personally find SD2 and the CHEWWwwww~ sound that you use for entering super-slo-mo to go quite well together, and I expect them every time.
Since I am one of the people that has watched every one of your uploads, I can say that yes I had noticed repeating sounds across several vids, and it doesn't matter at all - I still thoroughly enjoy them every time.
exactly, he has subconsciously built brand identity into the sounds, in a way that maybe only VSauce has achieved besides him
I think there was an episode in the show episodes that didn't have SD2 and it really weirded me out. I totally agree it needs to stay!
Being a sound designer myself I found this very interesting. I am a little bit surprised that the real sound captured on set is almost entirely useless most of the time, though I think that the fact that you slow down all the library sound elements makes them believable even though they are still orders of magnitude faster than the footage. If I could give you one tip - add highpass filters at 50-70 Hz to get rid of the very low boomy stuff that sometimes piles up and creates clipping in your videos. You could also use a limiter to prevent the clipping. When designing sounds for a film I usually fill the empty spaces with "room tone" (very quiet ambient noise) but the synthetic choir sound is to my ears a very important piece of music of this show, and contributes greatly to the feeling of wonder that watching slowmo footage gives me.
Anyway, huge thanks for showing your workflow!
Would one use the timeline audio track mixer for the best effect from the highpass filter and limiter?
Totally agree about the choir sound - it's the perfect sound for what it's being used for in this channel.
I was thinking about the clipping as I watched the video, and thought maybe it's intentional since it's embedded in our brains that slow mo sounds have to be a little clippy in order to sound realistic? I dunno
Sweet and tasty!

Your sound design was so good and fitting that it didn't even come to my mind that these couldn't actually be the original sounds. Now I can appreciate much better all the work that goes into a Slow Mo Guys video.
This is one of the best sound design workshops I've ever seen. It's just as good as your exposure and focus one.

We love "Synthetic Design 2", it's already the official song of the channel. I specially love the fact that, in Planet Slow Mo, there's an orchestral version of it
It would be too jarring if they replaced the synth choir, I'm so used to it now.
It literally brings a whole clip together. Definitely a familiar sound for any Slo Mo Guys fan

Which episode...?
The one where they were catching fish on the Illinois River

How different would the main channel be without Gav's perfectionism that he actually achieves for every video. He just described some of the most extensive, well-thought-of sound design on any RUclips channel as "I just wing it"
I mean, honestly, that's kind of what all Foley is. You take a clip that has no sound, then just mess around until you find a sound that your brain goes "yeah, that's what that sounds like."
Try this; pull up two videos. One of bacon sizzling and another of rain on concrete. Mute the rain video, play them both at the same time, but just stare at the rain video. It won't take too long until your brain will just hear rain.
I figured some sounds were fake but never realized how many. Absolutely mad amount of effort and skill and brilliance go into that. The attention to detail to the beautiful shots and added sounds, like the shot of the ball rolling across the rail. Absolutely mind blowing. Mad respect for all the videos.
Even the wobling of the pinball decor whle you were explaining that it has to sound "wobly" in slowmo, my brian was like "No! That's definitely how it actually sounds"

Gavin Free, you are one of the most talented and dedicated nerds I have ever had the honor to witness. Thank you for your detailed explanation of your sound design methods and execution. Thank you very, very much for your dedication to such tedious and lengthy procedures. They exquisitely enhance the videos.
I love the synthetic design sound in your vids. It’s very relaxing..not sure how to describe it otherwise. I love the “slow down” sound, too. Amazing amount of work that goes into every second of every video. I had no idea. Thank you.

I have always loved the choir sound it’s something I’ve always looked out for. It’s iconic at this point.
Despite your statement about this not being a tutorial, and being just the way you do it, this is exactly how I do sound design! Listening for qualities within individual sounds that you can imagine working to picture, being able to hear in your head how it'll sound pitched down or stretched just by previewing it, layering the absolute f out of stuff, and a bunch of trial and error! Your work is absolutely instinctive, and it's encouraging to know that there's somebody that works in precisely the same way as I do! Great stuff man. You could probably stand to give Pro Tools a try, as that's what I use, and it gives you a lot more flexibility mix-wise, plus plugins, but you do such a great job with Final Cut, it doesn't seem necessary!
Pleeaaaasse no other backgeound slow mo sound, this one has become a sort of trade mark of your channel. If I hear that sound anywhere I instantly think: "uuhh slow mo guys, I like"
Another vote to keep SynthDesign2. It is the sound I expect to hear when I watch your videos. It is your signature sound. It is comfort. It is peace. It is the sound of home. It perfectly compliments the raw beauty of your shots. I've learned to anticipate it, even when you pitch it up and down for variable speed edits.
Holly cow!!! I have a deeper appreciation for the work you put into the editing. Your videos aren't just slow motion. It's "ART". I didn't realize how many audio layers you put in your work. Just awesome. Thanks for all the work.
I figured something like this was the case, but hearing you go into detail about it makes me appreciate just how much effort it takes to make your videos. That must be one of the main reasons why you guys are so popular; your production quality is second to none.
So according to Gavin's everyday calendar, he's done something once a month, but he skipped it in September, and done it twice in October. I wonder what it was.... but Simone would be proud.
It lines up with release dates on Slow Mo Guys videos. There was none in September.
Just compared it to the main channel release dates and it does in fact line up perfectly. Hadn't realized that a bunch of videos released on consecutive 18ths. Shame it doesn't show the future.

And this is why it annoys me when people say Gavin isn’t smart. This is so incredibly brilliant, and the fact that he puts so much effort into videos, finds a sound for every single thing that is going on, things some people won’t even notice, is insane to me. Bloody well done. It’s amazing.
He’s very smart. He just can’t communicate his ideas clearly sometimes. Which ends up being funny by the way he phrases it.

When I started getting more into sound design a couple years ago I was blown away at how important it was, and how quickly it can take a project from "ehhh, it's passable" to "this is now fantastic."
I took a film making class a couple years ago as an elective, and one of our assignments was "Polish a Turd," IE: We were given a bunch of really crap footage, with horrible acting, and a very loose narrative. We were told to edit it together in any way we saw fit to make it better. Most people focused purely on the sequences and cutting together of the shots, but me and 1 other guy put a lot of effort into the sound and ended up making the two best and most cohesive versions.

It feels so bad leaning all this stuff without paying any money. It's like a magician is revealing all his tricks.
@Benjamin McCann doesn't stop people from trying to get money for teaching people about it
@Benjamin McCann but it doesn't cost us money which is the main thing. RUclips is a good way to teach as it's free for us but the adverts give them money.
I just think the human race would be more advanced if the government of every country put some money into some nation wide youtube videos so you didn't have to buy books for education. It would be easier than paying so many teachers. And I know theres the flaw that not everyone has the internet.
Anyway, what I meant by my comment is that Gav is teaching in a good way and effectively giving it away for free but others may try to profit off of this information that you say is well known and not really a secret by making people pay for the service
All this extra work really shows in the videos and brings the quality up to the next level. I would have guessed a much higher percentage of the sounds were native to the actual video.
i have a new appreciation for your videos haha, knowing how much work goes into each one. You are an artist!
The ultimate flex, showing us how he does his job knowing full well someone could try and replicate his work. Really highlights the genuine intent to share knowledge at the core of Slow Mo Guys.

I knew I had seen that somewhere before! Thanks, that was bugging me.
that part where you showed the rubber balloon splitting and the sound only coming in a few seconds later really hammers into my head how sound travels way slower than the speed of light, i love it a lot. i also realized sound comes in waves, and slowing down waves is basically just stretching them. at slow enough speeds it would just be a kinda flat looking wave and thats why all the different tones and highs and lows kinda just meld into one clump. i guess this is obvious to everyone else, but i feel like i just learned something new, even if i already knew it in my brain beforehand!
