I had a service advisor whose previous job was selling computers at a big box store. When he went to purchase a home computer, he came to me for advice because he knew that I kept up on technology. BTW, he knew nothing about cars either.

Found your channel, and watched your videos on the terrible dealership pay structure for techs, absolutely eye opening and thank you for the valuable education. Have 3 questions I'd like to check with you, 1) do indie shops pay technicians better than the dealership flat rate and if so what is it? 2) how could I, or is it even possible to tell an indie shop that I'd pay the tech more than book hour in order for the work to be done correctly and have it actually happen, 3) if there's warranty work/recall, is it ever possible to have the manufacturer pay an indie shop which pays technicians better than the dealership perform the warranty work/recall?

I'd rather work at Walmart than work as a tech at a dealer.

A Ford service advisor was bragging to me that he made $200k last year while scheduling service for my truck.

With your education and experience it's a no brainer.....UNIONIZE!! Its not like they can say "fire everyone" because there aren't enough mechanics and trained techs for them to replace you with! For now you hold all the cards, strike while the iron is hot! Solidarity brothers and sisters.....demand a little bit bigger slice of the pie!! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

…that’s why I have low trust level and minimal confidence anytime when I interact w/ those so-called service advisors. I felt each time there was an element of selling unnecessary service(s) and maybe questionable repair work…especially I have general (or good enough) automotive knowledge to determine if the work is deemed necessary! Don’t forget about “RUclips university” and various large cat enthusiast forums that can provide objective advice too.

Unfortunately this isn't something that's unique to the automotive world. This pay gap exists in all industries when looking at sales positions compared to those responsible for production-level work. That is because in many cases those people with 'soft skills' are responsible for generating a greater portion of a company's revenue than those in difficult technical positions. From a business perspective, sales are absolutely fundamental to a company's success, and by its very nature the work of a salesperson simply has greater scalability. For all the hours that a top-level technician can spend engrossed in a single repair, even a mediocre salesperson could be securing revenue from multiple customers. It's simply an economic reality that some positions, despite requiring little technical skill, can wind up being more lucrative. It is certainly not fair when comparing the difficulty of the work, but it reflects the economic efficiency of those positions. This is why some of the world's wealthiest people are simply good at sales, and why there are no billionaire mechanics.
