How can you say “it’s not fair”? You didn’t have to buy the car, and unless you were looking at EV’s with rose-coloured glasses, there has been plenty of evidence to indicate their atrocious depreciation, among other things. Make decisions, live with the consequences. It’s not a matter of fairness.

@@lesbenson9421 Longer lived than any ICE car? Are you joking? There are ICE cars in great condition which have been running for 3-5 decades. Modern BEV and hybrids have hardly been around for more than 1 decade. And where did you get your "4x more efficient" statement from? They are not *that* much more efficient than ICE cars, and even if they were that is completely negated by needing to waste so much more of your time charging, and just finding a charger that is not only available but actually functional in the first place. Don't bother replying with "well you can just charge your car at home" because that is something that many people do not have the means to do for a variety of reasons.

Wrong. An Australian 2 petrol car household will spend a massive AUD $84,000 with operating and maintenance costs over 20 years. Moreover, 86 tonnes of CO2 will be emitted as well. This explains why most Australians are considering an EV for their future new car purchase as the financial savings, efficiency gains and ease of use benefits are truly huge. @smashyrashy the main difference you and others might not be considering, is with Electric you no longer need public infrastructure for 90% of most of your charging needs. I've 2 Electrics and only use public charging once or twice a year when driving to the west and back the same day. Its safer for my wife and kids as she doesn't have to leave them in the car to go pay in the garage also. I just saw 4 brand new high power chargers in carrickmines yesterday and there's more popping up everywhere. So your statement is simply not true. Everywhere there's a 3 pin plug, there's a potential charging spot. As the cars improve the time to charge will reduce.

It's completely fair. We so-called "anti-EV luddites" warned that this would happen, that they were not selling and that people do not want them. I have no empathy with anybody in this situation because you wouldn't listen and knew best. Whether you think the internal combustion engine is dead or not, it has been with us for over a century and
The lack of consumer confidence is entirely justified and correct. As they get older and the warranty expires, who is going to spend anything on these in the knowledge that one day the battery is going to need replacing at a cost of tens of thousands of pounds? Which means used EVs are going to be even less popular than new ones, and the older they are the less likely it is that people are going to want them.
You can buy a perfectly decent 10-15 year old car for not much money and not have too much a risk of a very expensive repair bill, but that's just not the case with EVs. Batteries will expire, electronics - a weak spot in ICE cars for many years - will also degrade and need replacing, as will the motors if they fail. These things might not be common failures but the point is if they do fail they practically write the car off because of the cost of replacing them. The lack of servicing requirement is a myth too. No new car requires much in the way of repairs but older cars do, and on older EVs that means huge bills so nobody will buy them.

@@Ifitwerks That's the part I don't understand. Basic research will throw up most of the issues but common sense should too. Yet how often do we see videos or posts from people who have regretted buying them because they didn't realise the charging situation was so bad, they expected it to get better, or the range isn't as good as they were told.
Why? Car manufacturers have been creative about mpg figures for decades, with some since admitting that their figures were calculated in a testing lab or on a computer simulation, and guess what - you'll never get close to that figure in the real world, so why should they tell the truth about EVs? Yet buyers seem to believe every word they hear and read and will even argue with you until they are blue in the face, often quoting "experience". NOBODY has any meaningful experience or stats because they haven't been around in any number for very long.
Sure, the odd Tesla might have done a zillion miles. So has the occasional Morris Minor, Land Rover or Citroen 2CV. But most haven't and like those cars, EVs with high mileage are the exception and given the number that were sold 10 years ago, only represent a tiny, minute percentage anyway. Yet they're treated like the Holy Grail - even if the stories of their mileage are even true to begin with. The truth is we just don't know how this will pan out, but the writing seems to be on the wall already. Most of those who wanted one have bought one, nobody else is interested and sales have plateaued at best, which is what I said would happen 5 years ago. Toyota RAV4 Hybrids are the most keenly sought private vehicles in Australia and the wait for new one stretched to 24 months. Even today you’re likely to sell a top spec 1-year old car for more than you paid for it. Toyota Hybrids are gold.
Australia is currently being flooded with cheap Chinese EVs for less than $A40K (£20K). While Chinese long-term quality might be uncertain, they have features, battery capacity and performance to blow away his old Hyundai Ionic and come with a 5-7 year new car warranty. I wouldn’t buy an EV, not because of cost or fear of low resale, but because there won’t be enough charging infrastructure for the rapidly growing fleet. (We have a 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid as cheapish family hack, couldn’t wait up to 12 months for a RAV-4 Hybrid).

I'm loving that the EV prices are dropping like stone. Poorer folks like me can afford a decent car like the Ioniq, and car dealers are keen to get rid of them. Having no fuel or maintenance costs, virtually, makes me a much more wealthy individual, able to pay off cars and live comfortably. May they continue to drop, cos sooner or later, petrol will be a luxury item, taxed heavily to save our spaces, and the dinosaur wagons will be as rare as horses.

EVs typically last for 120k mls before the battery needs looking at, which usually turns the vehicle to scrap because of the replacement cost. £14k as a sale starting price is reasonable depreciation for an EV that is 5 months older than the £19k purchase point.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and especially the state of Tasmania, have been relying exclusively on renewable energy sources for many years now. 8500 Euros for the battery is exceedingly cheap. Was that a limited range battery, or full range?
Traditionally motor vehicle manufacturers withdraw spare parts support at 7 years after that model ends, so when the computer fails or the circuitry to drive the electric motors fail your neighbour will have to rely on third party spare parts suppliers, if indeed any exist for what would be a low initial volume car.
EV batteries are built into the floor pan of the car, so what was the fitting and commissioning cost? Maybe your neighbour hasn't owned up to that yet.
Is your house and contents insurer aware that your neighbour has an EV? In their small print Insurers say that it is your DUTY to tell them of any changes to THEIR risk, otherwise in the event of a claim, they will deny liability.
