    Fun test! A few commenters pointed out the likely difference: I live in the EU, and as such there’s a 48*c/118*f cap on touchable surfaces in devices, DJI has two heat modes, and in the US it’ll allow you to go to 53*c/127*f. The app automatically controls that limit, and is unchangeable if within the EU. The other difference is I did my tests in direct sun, while yours were in the shade. Obviously, your shade temp was much much higher, but since this is about hitting the surface temp threshold, it’s plausible depending on exactly where the sensor is that trips that thermal limit, is closer to the case exterior.
    As for the difference in freezer testing, I last tested that last fall. Plausible something has changed in how they keep-alive camera in low temps (essentially to add a bit of heat to slightly warm the batteries), in recent firmware. I’ll try again. Cheers!

      Gopro 13, if you test, it is already over the EU law ( 48*c/118*f ), and the other Cams just follow the law, how did you come to the conclusion, that for overheating, gopro is better, just because he doesn't follow the law?

    • @nomad0714
      @nomad0714 Месяц назад +3

      @@RocaTT1456, you have that backwards.
      GP and others follow the law and allowed to run. DJI doesn’t, hence not allowed in UK, but looks the same in EU.
      Where did you get your info as it makes no sense. If DJI is not allowed to set in high temps, how is it complaint over the others? Just curious to know if you have some info I don’t have.
      Note 53degC falls into 2nd degree burn. This is why Sony calls high temp setting, tripod mode so it’s not hand holding and prevents it from lawsuits.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  Месяц назад +2

      You're a legend brother! And I actually reached out to DJI to see about that EU cap on the temp once some people started commenting. I'm pretty sure that must be the case, because I do remember on the Action 2 modular camera it had made a massive difference when they added in that high heat setting!
      And for the freezer testing, the main reason I thought it was odd was my personal experience with the Action 4 and Hero 12 snowboarding in the backcountry of Utah. I got super similar results to what I got on the mountain, but so stoked that now the Hero 13 is good to go for the backcountry!

    Dc Rainmaker is in Europe (Amsterdam if i remember correctly), so he is using DJI Action 4 with EU regulations, which means the camera shutdown temperature is couple of digits lower compared to US cameras. There is a workaround to force the Action 4 to use the higher temperature shutdown (US) limit, but he is not using that.

      Ace Pro owner here, the difference in compared to DC Hero 13 overheat test is likely due to the different in testing conditions. Part of GoPro improved heat performance is from the added heat dissipation from the added fins on front. But that only works when there is more of an ambient temperature difference. In contrast the AcePro has a more power efficient chip which doesn't generate as much heat to start off. I think that's the difference.

      Yes, black is a bad idea for pretty much any device working with or against heat. BUT nobody cares enough and if basically nobody buys a white (action) camera, manufacturers arent gonna bother. The best one can do is get any kind of white coat(ing) on the cam and not care about how it might look to others.
      For my part (as a stills photographer) i'd love to have a white camera (or at least light gray, since dirt does get a little bit tricky on white), but i simply dont have a choice (yes, canon has a white R50 and i've been thinking about it, but i've got a R6II so thats a huge specs difference just for some looks lol. Maybe one day i might get a white R50II as a backup body, idk)

    So far, here in Greece, AcePro is a real beast, handling insane temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius like a real... Pro.
    I did a series of tests for my measly channel (not sure if I'm confident enough to post them, but at least I've tried), and DJI Osmo Action 3 and 4 were the first and second to overheat (at around 8 minutes and 9 minutes respectively), the third to overheat was GoPro Hero 12 (at around 13 minutes) and Insta360 AcePro kept recording for about 12 more minutes, finally overheating at 25 minutes or so.
    But the real champion was the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that I used to record the entire process, which kept recording for 30 minutes, when I finally got out to my balcony and stopped it, gathered the remaining cameras and got back inside and away from the scorching heat.
    In general, overheating is the most common issue for cameras here in Greece, so AcePro and Pocket 3 are, currently, the best picks for my country.

    The extreme temperatures you mention are normal conditions here in Texas so that answered my question about overheating on the 13, thank you. Seems they still haven't figured out how to keep the GoPros from overheating. I will say though that on the GoPro 11, it can handle the heat much better IF there is wind blowing on it. I did a few videos using it on my electric scooter with temps around 110 and it did not overheat until I stopped. When I stopped, it shutoff within one or so minutes. As far as the cold goes, I have never experienced any issues on the GoPro 7, 8, 9 or 11. But we don't get extremely cold here usually. The only way I could think of to stop the overheating issue would be to vent the battery compartment. However, you would lose the waterproofness, unless they started offering the waterproof cases that some action cameras offer. Maybe the 14's will be better, guess we'll see next year. For now, I see no reason to upgrade from the 11 to the 13.

      @@SublimeOutdoors I wish I had known the reset sooner too, a freeze is even more of a pain when you're on vacation and have it in the Media Mod. I never lost any files though and that could be because I did a full, not quick, format in Windows before formatting in the camera. That was a trick that I learned elsewhere. I just like GoPro and the features such as the GoPro Labs firmware that gives it so much additional capability and customization. I honestly don't care about low light performance because it's a small sensor camera and not my best one for the darkness. But you can improve that a little by shooting in HDR and I got some great video of lightning from a recent storm that required very little editing. I'm really debating an upgrade to the 13 as the macro and anamorphic lenses would be useful. I will say that with airflow, I have yet to get the Hero13 to overheat in 4K (or 5K) 60 in 90F+ temps. And that's with a GoPro Sleeve or 3rd party windslayer. For reference, I'm usually cycling with the GoPro mounted to my handlebars or on a chest mount. That said, I've only had a few tests with the camera so far so who knows?
    Additionally, I'm curious if in these test the magnetic mount could have caused any issues for the Hero13. I remember in the past with GoPros that if you didn't have the fingers extended and mounted, the heat would get trapped in that little compartment and cause the camera to overheat. I know I experienced this with the Hero11 and Hero12 when I just plop the cameras on a flat surface with the fingers folded into the body of the camera.
    Either way, I agree that this isn't how any of the cameras would be used haha. I love your videos and look forward to more. Thanks!

    It is surprising that few people focus on the weight and size of the camera. This is really important, the more compact the device, the harder it is to make good regulation / heat output. In this aspect, DJI leaves no chance to competitors.

    Great job on the video David! Thanks for making it. You don't have to go to Dubai for that kind of climate. Vegas stays those temps throughout July and August, so I would say those are pretty "real world" tests for action cameras. Surfing and snowboarding aren't the only kind of action, David. 🤣😂

    I’ve had a lot of issues with the last several GoPros. They even replaced a few for me. And I wasn’t do anything extreme. I was recording inside a climate controlled area, or in a barn in Texas, but not super hot. Their tech basically told me to drop down all my settings to keep it from overheating. Turn off gps, turn off all the bells and whistles they used to sell it 🙄 Like, what’s the point?
    That being said, it affects the performance of each camera. Maybe he didn’t realize they weren’t at exactly the same settings. Maybe one had gps still on, or whatever. Point is, that’s the part we don’t know and if it affected the outcome. Mine (GoPro) still over heats, but just not quite AS QUICKLY. It works great snorkeling though 🤷🏼‍♀️👍🏻

    The other thing with the heat test is what is the humidity? I will guess his 80’s had a higher humidity making the air feel much hotter but due to the high moisture content it may have made it harder to she off the heat.

    Try putting them in the sun, and shooting for long periods of time. I'm a fly fishing youtuber in Australia, GoPro's became completely unuseable for me after the GoPro 8, constant overheating and shutdowns, losing critical moments all the time. I'm just back from Darwin, the hottest part of northern Australia, filmed for 7 days straight for hours on end with the DJI Action 4 (and the Sony FX3) and it performed flawlessly, didn't miss a beat. GoPro has had FIVE model updates since the GP8 and seems to have still not got the message from users about overheating. It would take an awful lot to convince me to go back to GoPro's.

    Include the GoPro Media Mod in your next test?
    Many (most?) people who use a GoPro for long periods of time are vloggers. And vloggers naturally want the best audio and use an external microphone plugged into a Media Mod on the GoPro.
    Yet, in all the overheating tests I've ever seen, no one ever does testing with the GoPro inside a Media Mod.
    If you wanted to do a test that nobody else is doing, I'd suggest a vlogging-specific overheating test. And such a test would would have to have the GoPro inside a Media Mod cage.
    I know that the GoPro Hero 13 can now attach to the DJI mic via Bluetooth. But that still doesn't help most of us vloggers. We routinely need to attach two microphones, and the GoPro Bluetooth connectivity doesn't allow for that. It can only handle one microphone at a time. Therefore, it's a non-starter and I still have to use my GoPro inside a Media Mod. And the Media Mod would significantly affect overheating.
    I'm curious to see how your GoPro Hero 13 would fare in these competitions while inside a Media Mod. If you included that option in your tests, you'd be the only one doing it. 😂

  • @disco.jellyfish
    @disco.jellyfish Месяц назад

    I find these overheating tests extremely important. The whole purpose of action cams is to be very small and durable and keep recording under any extreme circumstances and never break. That is under water, in extreme heights, in blizzards in forest fires after hitting something at high speeds even if the lens slightly cracks. An action camera must be as durable and enduring as possible and keep recording as long as possible and be very reliable. GoPro consistently fails to achieve that - at least when it comes to overheating.
