"Mastery is earned and mastery takes time mastery stays until nine, ten, eleven ,tweleve o’clock to make sure the kerning is perfect, mastery stays until midnight to make sure it’s the right word to bring an idea to life, mastery stays until one o’clock at that point to make sure that the strategy is perfect and mastery stays later to make the operations of the company make sure it all works together, mastery doesn’t come overnight." - Brian Collins
I just finished watching this six years late. But better late than never. Brian's words are as relevant today as they were back then. This is a treasure chest for any designer, and definitely, this is not the last time that I'll go through this video. Many thanks to Chris & Brian
This interview spoke to me in a deeper way than just design. Mastery is a life long adventure, poetry is a seed for creativity and what is the truth about you and your brand, the REAL truth, your authentic self.
I just started at 36, switching from programming to design and I adore it! Same as I did adore Photoshop back at 2000. There is no age limit! Love the futur, love the vibe and love the psychological side of the show! Ty for everything!
Wow. This show is a real treat. First thought. Then I had to remind myself- no, you mean this RUclips channel is a real treat. This channel really blurs the lines of traditional RUclips and makes it so much more that what it is. The Futur is truly a prime example of using social media in a powerful way with such great impact. I can't even begin to explain how much I've benefit from this channel but soon enough my monetary contribution will come as I really do support what you're doing. So many people are missing out on the great abundance of knowledge and inspiration here and it is truly baffling. There should be way more likes but then again not everyone is as crafty or self motivated to find and soak up golden FREE information. Truly golden. What I love is that it's not one perspective and I have always appreciated that The Futur is open to letting people with various viewpoints come on and share what they have learned and experienced as well. Excellent work everyone.
If you guys are coming to Ireland you can stay at my place, I now all the great pubs. Love what you do, the design community is one of the friendliest and supportive and you are a prime example of what makes it great.
I studied art abroad in Ireland, Gallway Bay in 1992. I know what he is talking about. Storytelling geniuses of the world. Pub conversations and amazing land.
I can’t believe I’m just finding this. His philosophy is what most attracted me as a viewer. He hates certain words in our vernacular, and that’s something i hear a lot from executives and creatives as we move through difference stages of collective consciousness. We will only evolve (as a society)if we adopt different language in our expressive vernacular. It’s vital.
Remind me of one of my favourite interior designer Marcel Wanders' quote "Designs the presence celebrates the past (in Dr. C case: familiarity/being authentic to the brand) and creates the future (in Dr. C case: sth new/surprising)." Another beautiful way of saying
It struck me when he said try to mimic or emulate what you learn from your inspiration but find your own style.. What i had observed over the years from the greatest in any field is find a mentor and learn from them but don't make them your god..
Brian is a gem! Growing up among the extraordinary to bringing out the extraordinary in others. I've unlearned a lot of boundaries that were hammered in from outdated teaching in college and will hopefully step out of the box of language cliche's. Here's to constructing more creatively with authenticity and poetry. I've always feared burn out with deisgn but a creative career fuelled by a colorful montage of inspiration proves it can be avoided. Thank you for making all of this possible!
Great one! Brian is indeed big on storytelling and how bring out that truth about a cause or brand to shape the narrative. I met Brian at the Aspen Design Challenge back in 2008 when my team and I at CalArts were pitching our deck about the global water crisis. Learned alot from him.
I am, often, an idiot. I got it confused with Mt. Eiger. And I para-sailed, not climbed, near Mt. Eiger. My guide had called Mt. Eiger Switzerland's version of K2. I got it jumbled up.
Fantastic interview as always. I was going to do some client work this morning, but I decided to watch this, and I believe it was a great decision as it will inform some of the work I'm going to do right now. Thanks Futur Team !
Brian mentioned the controversy of the BP project (which I loved), but it raises the question... should we as designers have morals? Where do we draw the line on who we design for? Coca Cola has a long and current history of ethical stains, concerning the environment, human-rights, tax avoidance, lobbying (nearly $8million in 2016) etc. They also sell a product linked with diabetes and dementia (to name a few). And we're all familiar with BP's environmental calamities... So this clearly does not bother Brian (if the money comes in?). Should we take more responsibility as designers? We have a lot of power after all, maybe we should use it. I would like to think if it was my company I would retain principles and morals, but who knows. Fantastic video by the way. Really great insight and Brian seems great.
The only time we get Coca-Cola at home is when we have to wash the tough stains around the sink area. It works like a charm. Now, what it does after you have that whopper? Hmmm....
This man is amazing, i'm stunned by something in his energy. Been following you guys for a short time but watched previous episodes, this is my favorite so far! Keep it up with the great work, Love from Brazil
Iam not a designer, nor do i work in the industry. But i loved this interview. Brian is a good story teller, and i love origin stories which shows what makes people tick. Ive subbed to the channel and will be going through your past videos to look for some more gems

I would have liked to ask Brian or anyone else with an opinion when a company says it's "objective is to make money?" That's the motivation. Some companies don't have purpose or insights.
Hey Futur! Loved this show, so much knowledge, charisma and energy to handle. Always staying tuned in and dialed up. Thank you everyone for all that you do.
I saw the gas station, and immediately thought that it looked like a zeolite, and it made perfect sense, due to the environmentally-friendly concept behind it. I paused the video at that moment to admire that work, because of its scientific beauty.
33:30 damn, this description of the library is actually 😱 making me think it’s might not be totally awful to actually be someone’s employee, if I got to work in a place like that . . .
This thing is MASTERMIND level Genius. I love the hidden messages, it's really strange that so many didn't catch on to the joke. FYI you can prevent have a low-res graphics by using DropBox to translate your vision correctly XD
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Really Insightful, had to go through this 3 times to capture the points Brian mentioned. A lot of new perspectives to gain more inspiration. Thank you, Chris and team, for this fantabulous session.😀
Rewatching multiple times, I think I’m on the eighth view! Best conversation ever, wonderfully narrated with a delightful/fluid pace. Keep inspiring, be well x ta
WOW this episode is super premium! :) it really blew my mind! :) Thanks Chris and the dream team and especially to the Design Master Brian Collins! :) (watching it again right now hahaha)
The other hidden message I liked was the " think outside of the box " " Why put art into a box , unless you need to transfer it across the world of course " XD Genius. The OutRaGE
You need to collaborate or do something with/on the school Hyper Island. It's a very non traditional design / media school where you learn by doing. Failure is important. They have no traditional teachers. Look it up. Some of the best people in the industry went there.
1:07:00 I know Corita Kent from reading Riposte Magazine! I'm not a designer and I'm not a feminist, so it feels nice to know something from reading outside my professional area
Brian Collins needs his own youtube channel
I agree!
More like, we need his channel.
damn yes
this is so true
He really does

I saw him speak at HOW Design Conference. I want to hear everything that he says. This guy is brilliant.
He is.
I´m standing here in Sweden, Scandinavia folding my kids clothes and really enjoying this. The vibe and the meeting between generations. Thanks a lot!
You're a boss at multi-tasking!
This is pure fucking gold. Amazing performance by Chris leading the themes, Brian is a genius...

You guys nailed... Clarify of the”whys”. True Legend... Mr. Collins...
Rewatching this in Jan 2023. What Brian said about AI 4 years ago in this interview has always stuck with me.
This is Amazing!!! thanks Cris and the futur team and of course Brian.
This doesn't get old. Rewatched after a few months and still so much to digest. Thank you.
I love this guy. I'm getting his face tattooed on my chest! I LOVED his comment about fame vs mastery. So true! LOVE Cortia Kent as well!

Wow.. incredible. Thank you Chris, Futur team for bringing this in front of our eyes and giving us the opportunity to listen to this videocast.

I could not have anticipated Brian Collins on this show! A big applause to the Futur. Brilliant show, brilliant guest, & brilliant discussion.
It took some teeth pulling.

Thank you for making all of this possible!
"people who use the word - lifestyle - do not have one" comment really cracked me up. Such a fast and precise observation. :)
Thank you Collins for the great conversation you had with many different people. It gave me much more understanding and I really enjoyed it!
Such a great video, and guest! Wow. One of your best videos so far in my opinion. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Pure Quality.
This man exudes design joy, super inspiring.
Couldn't agree more!
Very impressive lineup of guests recently. Great discussions. Super inspiring content. Thank you!
straight to the top baby!
Too many designers now are scrolling through google and pinterest when getting inspired. But books are where it's at.
internet is great. but it doesn't have everything. the key is to know when to use what. one isn't better than the other. more about context.
Amazing piece of content. My key takeaway: Don't confuse Fame with Mastery.
Go back and find the Origin story.
Great one! Brian is indeed big on storytelling and how bring out that truth about a cause or brand to shape the narrative. I met Brian at the Aspen Design Challenge back in 2008 when my team and I at CalArts were pitching our deck about the global water crisis. Learned alot from him.
@36:30 that is just brilliant
43:08 "I once climbed a mountain in Switzerland, not far from K2." Legend.
I am, often, an idiot. I got it confused with Mt. Eiger. And I para-sailed, not climbed, near Mt. Eiger. My guide had called Mt. Eiger Switzerland's version of K2. I got it jumbled up.
@@briancollins9916 sets the record straight for a nobody like me. Legend.
