  • What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type?
    With the launch of a new newspaper magazine focused on the business of design, Chris sits down with Art Center graduate Minhye to go over some layouts.

    This is so cool. You give the most constructive criticism and feedback, and it's cool that you don't hesitate to suggest exactly what the designer could do differently rather than make them guess what you're thinking. A lot of directors would think that unethical but as a designer it's actually really helpful.

    Though it's been said many times before, I can't stress enough how essential the insight this type of video provides. Critiques - by their very nature - can be overwhelming at best, but nothing is worse than leaving an exchange with nothing to take away from it. All too often I find people failing to address what direction to take a project after identifying what doesn't work, creating only a bigger lapse in finding a solution that is better-suited.
    With each layout you were able to provide connections that read clear and were well explained, which in turn allowed viewers to follow along and learn with Min in the moment. Thank you to you both, would love to see more of these situations moving forward.

    As a reality tv enthusiast (yes there's such a thing) I love to watch shows that shows processes of doing things and I've been looking for shows that are multimedia related (there's one show about Photography called Top Photographer very recently, it's quite decent). You could do a mini series like this and I think you'll get a decent amount of leads since multimedia design has been a popular industry that a lot of young people venture to. I really like this video and I hope you post a lot more "process" or "on the go" kind of videos. Thank you!

    Thank you! This was very insightful. I think what sometimes happens is that the art director cannot express what he/she doesn't like and that leaves the designer confused and frustrated. Then the process takes twice the time as nobody really knows what needs to be fixed. The way you suggest how layouts can be improved and why some elements work and others don't, is very clear and makes completely sense. As a designer myself, one tends to look at your own work for too long and you do not see potential issues anymore. Feedback like this is pure gold. More feedback sessions like these will be fantastic. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share your knowledge and turn this in such a learning experience to the rest of the world.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  6 лет назад

      Ronel, I have a theory about those kinds of "art directors", they didn't earn their spot. they were promoted before they learned how to articulate feedback and provide clear direction. everyone seems to covet that title but don't actually know how to do it.
      we have a bunch more content like this coming down the line.

    • @ronelvanheerden246
      @ronelvanheerden246 6 лет назад

      I believe we all can do with a bit more education on feedback and clear direction :) Communication is a fine art very few has mastered. Listening is key but also knowing how your feedback is received (not what you say but what the other person actually hears) is something people should grasp. It takes loads of practice and self correction. And videos like these demonstrates all of this very well. I wish I had access to all this knowledge as a young designer! Well, now I can learn, practice it and teach it to others when the time comes :)

    What is the ugliest font & Pantone color in your opinion? I feel like taking on a design challenge.

    • @TedBettridge
      @TedBettridge 8 лет назад +6

      Easily Comic Sans with Pantone 448C ! Makes me feel a bit sick just talking about it. I'm sure the magic Chris Do could work some magic with it though :)

    If only some of my professors explain the way you do. Sometimes they would just say they don't think the design works but they don't actually point out what's not working. Or they'd say they don't like how it looks but don't suggest how I can improve it. Literally, just learned more in your 30min video than in one of my 3 hour classes. I sometimes even debate whether I should skip and just binge watch your videos. I've done it once. No regrets.

      Well to be honest, not likely. But only because my family and I have a very strict budget and tight resources. There are lots of things we deny ourselves--but it's for the greater good! No worries. One day I'll be much better-positioned, financially, and can afford more things which I'd consider "optional investments". Until that day, I'll continue enjoying this youtube channel and supporting in other ways.

    This is a brilliant re-thinking of what can be done with a tutorial video. I didn't just watch it, I actually saved it to use as a resource going forward. I would be very interested to see Chris Do evaluate designs and layouts in that are out in the market environment already - not just students. How does this magazine add work? What makes this billboard so effective? Is this webpage sabotaging itself? Can your Facebook and Twitter cover banners actually be useful - by utilizing basic design principles?
    Love the work done here, and I wish other teachers would follow this template.

    This was really awesome, and possibly one of the better "day in the life of" moments, it was super personal, but also professional and a bit casual. As I go back and slowly devour your back catalogue, there are a few that really stick out to me, and this is definitely one. Raw and (mostly) unfiltered.
