Why did they schedule a debate so early? Clearly, the advisors (handlers) have seen the decline worsening to the point where cracks were appearing in the media's efforts to hide the President's state. Waiting for a "normal" late cycle debate schedule wouldn't give them time to make a change. The solution was to schedule an early debate, giving them time to work on an alternate. So...not a mistake at all, but it was instead a nasty (but smart) calculation.
