Great project! I like that you changed it up and did a "non" wood project. Awesome idea!
Me too! I like how she isn't just pegged into only woodworking. I really like her metal projects (firepit, carport, etc).
Great idea April and so many uses, not just for gliding down the river but also for picnics etc. I too like a tune when i am fishing to relax to.
My wife and I have been kayaking for 20+ years. This would be a great addition especially for overnighters! Usually on the WI River and a lot of motored traffic. Thumbs up!
Pretty cool. Those are interesting looking "wing nuts" I call them toggle bolts. ;)
; ) I'll know for next time
Yes. And they're generally used as a form of drywall anchor.
I believe I've heard them referred to as "molly bolts."
+Larry Huffman mollys afre different. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_(fastener)
Those are hollow wall anchors.
Awesome idea, and build...thank you for taking us along, April!
For me a canoe trip is to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature , so taking this along seems counter to my goals. Nice job of figuring everything out . Still, I'll leave the noise to you youngsters. Enjoy your float !
Hey April, I always stop by when I want to learn something and have a good time while I'm doing it. Not disappointed again! Really enjoy your work. In line with that thought process I found a woodworker/carpenter today I think all would enjoy. His name is Marius Hornberger. Works in his basement, sounds German, turns out excellent work. I just watched a couple of his on building a dust collection system. Almost everybody probably watches his videos but I just thought the rest should hear about him. Not sure if I've seen all your videos yet but I'm about to catch up. Appreciate what you do. Thank you
Fun project. I made one a few years ago with just stuff I had laying around. I used old computer speakers and stripped them down. These bigger batteries are great because you can add a usb charge port and charge your phone at the same time. Well done. And kayaking is a ton of fun!
Nice! i like that you get outside of the sort of "wood working comfort zone" and explore new types of projects like this. It sounds corny but honestly it inspires me to do the same. thanks!
Those are spring toggle bolts for dry walls and other types of hollow wall construction :)
Also, a "Stereo" with only one Speaker is actually called a Mono.
Since some people tend to missread comments like this as insults, or lecturing:
No, it isnt meant as such. IMHO we never stop learning, and we should share our knowledge. Even if its about a mundane thing like how something is called and what it is used for, maybe that knowledge will come in handy some day.
I like it. It's a nice creative break from woodworking. April is mega-multi-talented.
Nice work April. Such a good idea. I'd be the same, listening to some good sounds cruising down the water. Far more quiet and relaxing that a boat motor. Keep up the fantastic work mate
Great Job April! I love your videos. I've been following for about a year now. Keep up the great work.
I laughed so hard when you said, " You could buy a Bluetooth speaker, but were is the fun in that?" Golden Moment!!! I agree with you whole heartedly April!
Random trivia: In New Zealand, we don't call those things a "cooler" or an "ice box", but it's a "chilly bin".
Gumboot Zone Ya'll also call car hoods bonnets, and car trunks the boot...no biggie though...the north and south here in the u.s. have different terminologies for the same things.
The best is "fanny". In NZ it does NOT mean the same thing it means in North America. It's MUCH ruder down there. Some Canadian and American girls have made some embarrassing mistakes while traveling in NZ or Aus.
Gumboot Zone I'm from nelson were are you from
Grew up in West Auckland, milked cows in various parts of Waikato.
Gumboot Zone oh cool
So.... Next week you turn a boom box into a cooler? ;) lol
Ha, I'll leave that one to somebody smart than I. ; )
That would be DIFFICULT to find.
steve
I love your channel ma'am, I would love to see this turned into a wood working project so you could have all the room you needed and then have the other section foamed in for refrigeration and have everything sealed since it will be on a kayak.
Cool. Thanks for sharing. My wife and I love kayaking . Something to think about adding to our trips. Thanks again
I could be wrong but I thought people use 4wheelers to float rivers in TX?
Fentertainment And in Southern Oklahoma lol.
This is one of the "cooler" projects you've done lately.
Hahaha
let the puns begin!!!
That's a cool pun.
As another option, Dayton Audio has amplifier boards with Bluetooth built into it. Great little units and tiny.
Great build btw!
We got into kayaking several years ago too. Kayaking has exploded in popularity this decade; it's having a huge technical renaissance right now like mountain biking had 15 years ago.
EDIT: You must have been nervous, you're holding your paddle upside down in the end clips. 😉
thechosendude Maybe a beer or 12 too many...
Thank you April for this idea I was looking for an idea for my Kayak fishing trips 🤗
Props to you for picking up a new hobby. Luckily you have a new speaker to drown out some of the haters ;) Really cool that you were able to keep some of the "cooler" functionality.
Even for picnics, this is still pretty awesome. A very cool project. I like it.
Love your videos. April. Keep building what you like. I'll watch and learn.
Love seeing the full build after catching you showing this off on IG; turned out great. Also, great job on that last second outro shoot. Enjoy the river.
I love how you are playing the youtube royalty free music at the end.
Nice job April! 👍🚣🍺📻.... Thanks for showing it in use!
I love your JBL flip! I love seeing my woodworking video friends using our products!
BTW, all your videos are wonderful, April. Keep it up! I like to show my daughter them so that she knows its okay and cool for her to come out to my shop with me and help me make stuff!
You work with JBL? I'm a big fan of your products if so.
Good to hear!
It must be a Texas thing. In AR we have nice 4 wheeler trails and the Texans bring theirs with huge chrome wheels and bumpin' huge stereos to cruise through the woods! You did a nice job, take that to a cookout!
And how many dares did you get to go kayaking with this playing Dueling Banjos from Deliverance? LOL Great project, it can work for pretty much any boating experiences....Pretty awesome!
I cheap waterproof bluetooth speaker is what I use on my boat, works great. If anything keeping the battery and installing cigarette outlets to charge phone and speaker.
I swear I saw the same "Wilker-wink" at 3:54 that we saw right before the Corvette made some donuts. I like the idea!
Well done April! This video is a year old already however, I would look at adding a small solar charger to the lid... You can find them that are made for charging a cell phone and with USB plugs... Not sure but i would imagine it may be possible to find one that would even provide power to the trickle charger to keep the stereo portion charged as well...
keep up the good work April !!
This is a fun video to watch. Sometimes we just need to do something fun! I don't know if I'll do it in a cooler or not, but maybe. The idea is also something that could be used when I travel to unfamiliar cities, and want to have my music on, but also want to keep an old phone I have connected to be able to hear GPS directions. And thanks for the parts list. That will help.
As for all the naysayers who are active today, there wasn't a full moon last night, so I don't know what's going on. I noticed that look when you mentioned "borrowing" Cody's trickle charger. Poor guy.
You have really outdone yourself this time. Great 👍 job!! I hope you have a great time just floating down the river. Post some pictures of your trip we would love to see them. I don't think that Cody will mind too much that you raided his stash. After all what are spouses for if you can't " borrow " a few things. 😉.
Thanks for sharing
Great addition to the yak and definitely a fun build. Have you thought about maybe doing a build on a custom fitting yak cart for the yak, for when you want to get to those hard to reach spots to drop in at?
Love the project, the only thing I would change is the have the battery more accessible for when you have to replace it.
Thank You for the great videos.
Is there nothing you can’t do? Love ALL your projects but especially the organization builds.
The ending was beautifully shot! Such a peaceful, beautiful view.
cool project, we don't really need cooler boxes here in Ireland, it's usually raining, cold, and everyone looks blue like smurfs
Great job with the cooler, you have a very inventive mind, we enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing.Blessings! !!!!!!
Awesome job April! A great way to enjoy a ride down the river!
Solid music choice, April. The Knocks are absolutely fantastic!
Yep I love them!
Great build! Would be handy for the jobsite too!
Oh yeah it would. I need to test the battery though and see how long it will run before it dies. I'm not sure if it would last an entire day or not.
April Wilkerson You've got me looking now, those jobsite radios are $$, a lot of the work I do is outside or in barns. May have to give it a try.
What a cool idea! You lost me at 2:35 but what a great result! And I think listening to music on a kayak is perfectly fine. It didn't sound rowdy to me.
A tip for the end - since you don't have much leftover space, freeze two water bottles and use them in place of the ice packs - you can take more water, and by the time you get to those they'd have at least partly melted...
I am an avid swamp/creek/river kayaker and I prefer the peace and quiet of nature. I get to hear the animals and other wildlife and just leave the stress of the day behind. Interesting build though, for a lake float with friends I can see this as an option.
You are awesome April! Leave the jam at home and enjoy what God has given us.
A stereo requires two speakers, two amplifiers (or two in one package), and a two channel sound source. Stereo is dual and mono is one.
How did you control cabinet resonance? What is your response curve for your half cooler/half stereo? I bet you would be surprised and not in a good way.
When you are switching the power to a device, you don't want to switch the negative side of the battery but instead the positive side. The negative side is the reference and the common point for all of your components drawing power. You don't want to take that away when you turn it off. Switch the positive side and retain the negative connectivity and you will be safer.
The things you used instead of wing nuts are called toggle bolts. They are meant for fastening things to drywall that are too heavy for molly anchors. I hope all of this is helpful.
You can put a little solar panel on the cooler lid and have it charging while you're on the river or going to and from the river.
April don't listen to those fools, you are a maker and if they don't like what you make they don't need to watch. I made one as well also using solar to charge the battery. BTW where do you kayak in Texas, I plan to start here in the Hill Country. Keep up the good work, I don't think they realize that you can use that for camping, going to beach or BBQs as well!!
Looks like you have just enough room for ice and beverages!
beer, music and nature : good idea !
Lol dry wall anchors my friend... that's what those wing nut things are. You really seem like an awesome person, and remind me of everything I miss about home (Ft Worth). Thanks again for another awesome video. :)
Nice idea
BUT
when I'm in the woods, I prefer the sounds of nature over anything else.
Birds, squirrels, chipmunks, water gurgling, etc....so much nicer than a guitar solo.
In all honestly I typically paddle without music as well, but I love to stop on river banks on a long paddle and hang out for a bit. That's when I enjoy busting out the stereo. But I've also been using this when the family comes to town and want to just hang out in the river with some tunes.
Yep, nature is king for relaxation. When i put my kayak in the ocean for a paddle , its un- believable how tranquil it makes me feel. A Loud stereo would just ruin it --- Although when just sitting & fishing tunes are required some times. So, it has its place. Having the option is what's nice.
Definitely agree with the 'BUT' part. Just put on your headphones and leave the blaster at home.
oobaka1967 I think the same, I actually find it annoying when people plays music on places like this
I agree ☝️
This is a neat idea. It would be great just for a shop radio. I love kayaking too, but I try to bring as little gear with me because I need the quiet (aka: mom of many).
General rule of thumb, put your power switch on the hot wire. Putting it on the ground means everything is still energized and is just looking for a path to travel through (your body).
Cody's bolts are originally called Molly or Toggle Bolts. They have acquired useful other names as well.
I'm glad I read thru most of the comments since I (and my wife) said "STEREO?" Oh well.
The only thing that I think I might do differently would be to use a lockable (via the handle or some type of latch) cooler. If the cooler / kayak should get away from you and / or tips over you will most likely lose your phone - if it is connected to the setup. Now I don't know about you, but I don't wish to have anything happen to my phone!
Nice build, and skip the negative comments, some people are just keyboard warriors with no life.. .. ..
Is *someone* going to be in trouble when Cody's bike battery goes flat because *someone* re-purposed the charger? :) Nice little project...you've got me eyeing up my cooler box now....
It wasn't me.....
Right on! Your favorite tunes doing your new favorite hobby, I'm guessing this new move has put you a lot closer to the water, I love it when good things happen to good people. Love your vids.
This is great. Would love an article with more details so I could try it as well.
Check out her webpage, listed above. It has written tutorials on every project with step by step instructions and pictures of each step. That's how I've made several of her projects.
haha you know you live in the future when kayaks come with fish finder! :D
Seriously! haha
2 things worry me: The condensation that will pool at the bottom of the cooler where your battery sits (because of the ice packs and cold bottles). And then on the opposite side of things the fact that you've put an amplifier in a thermally insulated enclosure. It could lead to overheating of the amp or the transformation of your cooler into an oven.
Hopefully you can update us how it works out after you've used it for a while.
congratulations april, very original, from Veracruz Mexico
Why not add a solar panel to the top of the cooler as well? Awesome project April! I would suggest using a lithium ion battery instead though, more expensive but much more appropriate for this application.
Such a cool project!
Great work, thanks for taking the time and sharing!!!!
Now just add a solar charger to the top and your set.
A solar panel small enough to fit on the cooler lid still wouldn't put out more than a few hundred milliwatts, which probably wouldn't even keep the phone charged when in use, nevermind power a radio.
Yea , add a few solar panels to top and sides of cooler To charge battery.
But together with the battery the solar panel can charge on stops.
I worked at an RV place and we sold 2W trickle charge solar panels that would fit just fine on the top of that cooler. Since it would pretty much always be charging at least a little, it would be plenty to keep the battery from discharging. It was enough to keep RV battery banks from draining in storage so I'm sure it would be sufficient for this application.
April Phister Right on sis. Well said.
Obviously, Dueling Banjos as one of the tunes?
Great project & video
Love from Scotland 5* :D
I would build one similar to this in 2023/4 but I would also add a vhf radio for my kayak and some lights.
Cool idea. I live in the midwest, but I have also lived in the south. Down there, it was an ice chest, but up here it's a cooler. Hmmmm....
I have big speakers, and i have a refregirator. Hmmm. 😒
you must also have a cruise liner first
LOL
Love it!! Hahaha, can you imagine the ending shot......Me coming into frame paddling my ass off and you see a rope off the back of my yak then the refrigerator comes floating into view booming music and floating along behind me.
Nature is king for relaxation. When i put my kayak in the ocean for a paddle , its un- believable how tranquil it makes me feel. A Loud stereo would just ruin it --- Although when just sitting & fishing tunes are required some times. So, it has its place. Having the option is what's nice.
Yeah I agree, when I paddle i don't actually use it. However, I do enjoy pulling off on an isolated river bank and hanging out in the middle of a paddle. Snacking on something and enjoying some tunes then. Or when the family just wants to go down and sit in the river so the kids can splash around. It definitely has a place.
Thanks for the Reply & Congratulations on over 500,000 subscribers. Take er easy.
Hi big fan from Norway. Love this project.
Lasse Christensen Finland reporting...
nice idea ..... just one small downside is that the amplifier produces alot of heat so your beverages and cold stuff inside wont stay cold for long time ....
This has to be the biggest backlash I have seen April get. Craziness
It blows me away, you would think I'm beating baby seals or something...
April, good morning!
I thought you were going to use the 2 speakers in the box, but I really enjoyed your project!
Michel

nice for camping to and keeping everything dry if it rains. I'm a nature guy, and don;t even listen to my radio in the car much.(do to having in my office all day). But everyone to there own wither you your STB and don't care about others or what they thing. Or knowing other like there peace and quite. It's a nice project and well done.
Really neat cooler project. Just a friendly reminder tho to wear your lifejacket! Being able to swim is no good if you hit your head on the way out of the boat.
Most of the time, you will want to interrupt the positive not the ground when adding switches.
Get on eBay, search cutting compass and purchase one (or make your own from exacto knife blades and a few pieces of hard wood). That's the best way to cut round holes in plastic/paper/cardboard and if you're patient enough, even thin plywood.
On dry land you might try completely inverting your cooler to see what would happen if your rolled while kayaking. I'm assuming you don't whitewater judging by your gear - still it might be good to check and make any adjustments you find necessary. Jus' thinkin'
Looks like you bought some beautiful property :)
Wow!! April, after reading the comments, did you think this great project would create such a firestorm of opinions that really HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL BUILD?!! Loved the project! Now I just need to get it built and start annoying people!! Lol!
You could line the inside with dynamat to lower the low-end "boom" it seems the plastic box creates.
Cool idea! Depending on your needs, there are some fantastic Bluetooth-amplifier circuit boards (look for TDA7492P) that you probably have seen Laura use in a few videos. They are awesome! Going with marine grade stuff is probably the best thing to do here! ;) Good job!
Cool project, fun to see you work with electronics :)
Also, it looks like you live in a beautiful area!
We did this for emergency two way radios for a grab and go system in emergency events.
I think a lockable lid would help you keep all your stuff inside the cooler in case of a tip over.
"Room for a few waters." uh huh, haha
Great project, but one question tough. Where is your fuse for the battery? I'll recommend adding one just in case something goes pop, then you don't risk your battery exploding.
Anyways, very creative project - also great to take along at the beach :)
If you look inside, you'll see a small red container, that holds the fuse. ; )
Looks to be a fun time on the river. Consider stainless steel fasteners...
You should think about mounting a small solar panel and charge controller on the lid.
Next idea: take a sea kayak and put the speakers in the trunk holes. Imagine paddling in the middle of the calm lake, turn on Your music and make Your own wawes ;)
Just an FYI, you are holding your paddle backwards.
That is really neat! Nice work!
